GTA 6: Everything We Know
Last updated: 2026-08-03
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is an upcoming open-world action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games, releasing Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Set in the fictional state of Leonida — Rockstar's take on modern-day Florida — it returns the series to Vice City and follows dual protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the first named playable female lead in a mainline GTA.
GTA 6 is already a record-breaker before launch: its first trailer set a Guinness World Record with 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours, its second trailer became the biggest all-platform video launch in internet history with over 475 million views in a day, and analysts have called its pre-order campaign the strongest ever recorded.
This page collects everything confirmed and credibly reported about GTA 6 so far — release date and delay history, the map and setting, characters, gameplay systems, editions and pricing, trailers, multiplayer and roleplay plans, and technical details. It is updated as new official information lands, with clear labels separating Rockstar-confirmed facts from leaks and estimates.

Release Date & Delay History
GTA 6 releases on Thursday, November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Physical boxes ship from November 12, 2026, and pre-loading opens at local midnight ahead of launch. The date has been publicly reaffirmed by Take-Two on its February and May 2026 earnings calls and in its July 2026 SEC proxy filings.
The road here included two delays:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| December 4, 2023 | Trailer 1 announces a Fall 2025 window |
| May 2, 2025 | First delay — moved to May 26, 2026 |
| November 6, 2025 | Second delay — moved to November 19, 2026 |
| May 21, 2026 | Take-Two reaffirms the date: "we've been really clear that we're releasing the title on November 19" |
Announcing the second delay, Rockstar said: "We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve." Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has since said repeatedly that he does not expect the date to move again, and Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has put himself at roughly 90 percent certain the game ships November 19 without another delay.

Setting & Map: The State of Leonida
GTA 6 takes place in the state of Leonida, a fictionalized modern-day Florida, with Vice City — Rockstar's Miami — at its heart. Rockstar's official site names six regions:
- Vice City — the centerpiece, "the glamour, hustle, and greed of America captured in a single city." Official neighborhoods include Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market, and VC Port, "the cruise ship capital of the world."
- Leonida Keys — island chain "right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America."
- Grassrivers — Everglades-style wetlands where something "even more dangerous lies beneath the surface."
- Port Gellhorn — a fading coastal port town.
- Ambrosia — an industrial zone of factories and biker gangs.
- Mount Kalaga National Park — northern wilderness with "prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails," home to "hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals."
Additional confirmed locations include Stockyard, Lake Leonida, Gambit Bay, Washington Beach, Watson Bay, Southside Vice City, and the Leonida Penitentiary. Community analysis has matched Vice City landmarks to real Miami spots — from the 500 Brickell towers to Wynwood Walls and the Seven Mile Bridge — and the in-game club NINE1NINE parodies Miami's real 24-hour club E11EVEN.
Rockstar has published no official map or size figure — only that this is its "largest and most detailed open world." Fan mapping projects estimate a map roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, but every number circulating is an estimate, not official. Trailers confirm dense beaches with hundreds of NPCs, dynamic weather, alligators, sharks, dolphins, and confirmed scuba diving with explorable reefs and shipwrecks.
Characters: Jason, Lucia & the Cast
GTA 6 stars two playable protagonists, officially framed as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style criminal partnership — the first mainline GTA built around one:
- Lucia Caminos — the first named playable female protagonist in a mainline GTA. Per Rockstar, she wants "the good life her mom has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City," but "fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary." Trailer 2 picks her up post-release, ankle monitor and all.
- Jason Duval — "wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder." A failed soldier turned drug runner living in the Keys, working for veteran trafficker Brian Heder.
Rockstar's website introduces a wider named cast, each with official bios and screenshot sets: Boobie Ike (street entrepreneur with a real-estate, strip-club and recording empire), Dre'Quan Priest (hustler running Only Raw Records), the Real Dimez (rap duo Roxy and Bae-Luxe), Brian Heder (Keys drug runner "still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori"), Raul Bautista (a seasoned bank robber whose "recklessness raises the stakes with every score"), and Cal Hampton (a conspiracy theorist snooping on Coast Guard communications).
Rockstar has confirmed no voice actors. The widely circulated castings of Dylan Rourke as Jason and Manni L. Perez as Lucia are based on resemblance and resumes, not any Rockstar announcement.
The story is chapter-based — a series first, confirmed indirectly through Rockstar's own edition copy describing content "uncovered behind each chapter." The chapter count is not confirmed.
Gameplay & Confirmed Features
Rockstar's June 2026 pre-order materials confirmed a deep criminal-economy loop:
- Gang Compounds — repeatable open-world raids for contraband (the PTT Youngin$ compound in Southside Vice City is the named example).
- The Fence returns from Red Dead Redemption 2, buying most stolen goods "at a reasonably discounted rate."
- Personal garages with weapon lockers for loadout customization and secure storage for unsold stolen goods.
- A realistic weapon-carry cap — two handguns and one long gun; changing loadout means returning to a garage.
- Two-layer firearm customization — skins and attachments.
Confirmed side activities: restoring project cars for a Classic Car Collection, fishing, gym training, boxing and MMA, hunting, pool, mini-golf, kayaking, basketball, and scuba diving. Character customization spans clothes, hairstyles and tattoos — plus Lucia's makeup and even fingernail styling — all tied to in-world businesses like mod shops, salons and tattoo parlors. Vehicle customization covers interiors, rims and paint.
Trailer 2 also confirmed an in-game social media feed in the style of TikTok or Reels, with NPCs livestreaming events as they happen across Leonida.
Beyond that, credible leaks (notably from the 2022 breach, corroborated by trailer analysis) describe a smarter wanted system — zone-based searches, witness descriptions of your car and clothing, non-lethal police escalation, K-9 units, a surrender mechanic, and a six-star maximum — plus NPCs with schedules, moods and memory of past encounters. Rockstar has not officially detailed these systems, and it has not confirmed how (or whether) character-switching works. Read our NPC AI and wanted system deep dive for the full breakdown.
Editions, Price & Pre-Orders
Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. There are exactly two editions — no Collector's Edition exists:
| Edition | Price | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | Base game + Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | Everything in Standard, plus exclusive shops, missions, vehicles and gear "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story" |
The Vintage Vice City Pack (all purchases before November 20, 2026) includes a '55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach, retro outfits for Jason and Lucia, a tropical weapon pattern modeled on Tommy Vercetti's shirt, and a month of GTA+ on digital.
The Ultimate Edition adds five exclusive shops (including Rideout Customs and the Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor with 50+ signature tattoos), two exclusive story side-missions (the PTT Youngin$ compound raid and Wyman's Classic Car Collection), a 1995 Grotti Cheetah and 1967 Vapid Dominator Buggy, engraved personal sidearms, the Paradise Garage safehouse in Watson Bay, and a Shitzu Squalo boat. Locking single-player content behind the pricier edition drew notable community criticism.
Physical copies contain a download code — no disc. Rockstar has stated plainly that a disc will not be included and no disc version is planned, which led a pair of physical-media retailers to refuse to stock the game. Region restrictions follow your platform account's region; uniquely, codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after launch (May 8, 2027) due to local regulations.
Newzoo called the launch "the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded," modeling roughly $260 million in global first-week pre-order spend — while debunking the viral "$1 billion in pre-orders" and "39 million pre-orders" claims as implausible. See our full pre-order guide.
Trailers, Screenshots & Records
Trailer 1 (December 4, 2023, 1:31) revealed the Vice City setting and Lucia, set to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road." It holds the Guinness World Record for the most-viewed game reveal trailer in 24 hours on YouTube: 90,421,491 views.
Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025, 2:47) was, per Rockstar, "captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes" — on a base PS5, not a Pro. It became the fastest-growing video launch in internet history: over 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours, beating the previous record of 365 million. Its lead song, The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together," saw streams spike roughly 182,000%.
Alongside Trailer 2, Rockstar refreshed the official site with character pages and screenshots; as of an August 2026 audit the site hosts exactly 70 screenshots across 14 sets, two trailers, the cover-art animation, and eight character clips. The nine-panel cover art was revealed June 18, 2026 — complete with the series-tradition helicopter tucked into the top-left corner, a habit running 25 years back to GTA III.
There is no Trailer 3 yet. As of early August 2026, Rockstar has never announced one, and audits of the official site's code show exactly two trailer entries with no third slot. Insider Tom Henderson has predicted a third trailer around Take-Two's August 7 earnings call — a prediction he himself stresses is not a leak.
Multiplayer, GTA Online & Roleplay Servers
GTA 6 launches as a single-player game. Rockstar's pre-order materials describe it as "a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet," and no online mode or date has been announced. Precedent points to online following launch: GTA Online arrived about two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013.
What's credibly known beyond that:
- UK court filings surfaced in January 2026 revealed internal Rockstar messages describing a 32-player test session — read by press as a possible baseline, though that reading is interpretation, not a Rockstar statement.
- Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has reported plans for a significant online mode; insider Tez2 has suggested it could be sold separately, and that episodic single-player expansions with new areas are planned.
- Rockstar has confirmed no GTA Online progress carry-over has been announced — signals point to a clean slate. GTA Online itself continues: Take-Two says support runs "as long as players engage."
Roleplay: the Cfx.re / FiveM story
Rockstar acquired Cfx.re — the team behind FiveM and RedM, the platforms powering GTA 5 roleplay — in August 2023. Since then it has consolidated GTA RP onto FiveM (rivals alt:V and RAGE:MP were shut down in 2026 under license enforcement), launched the curated Cfx Marketplace for paid mods, released FiveM for GTAV Enhanced into early access (July 21, 2026) with a 2,048-player architecture it is now "looking to push beyond," and partnered with NoPixel — the biggest RP community — on NoPixel V for the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Rockstar's Creator Platform job listings describe "fully customized dedicated servers" and a monetized creator economy — language describing FiveM/RedM today, but hiring that many read as groundwork for GTA 6's community-server future. FiveM itself cannot run on GTA 6 at launch: it is built against GTA 5's engine, and GTA 6 has no PC version yet. Official GTA 6 roleplay support is unannounced — but every signal (the acquisition, the marketplace, the hiring) points toward it. The moment GTA 6 server communities can register, they will be listed on our GTA 6 server list — full multiplayer explainer here.
Platforms & the PC Question
GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no last-gen version, and the launch is simultaneous on both consoles — Take-Two has confirmed the Sony arrangement is a marketing partnership, not exclusivity. Strauss Zelnick's explanation for console-first: "Rockstar always starts on console because... you're judged by serving the core."
A PC version is not announced. Rockstar has said nothing about a PC release, window, or system requirements. History is the only guide: GTA 5 took about 18 months to reach PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13, which is why most projections land on late 2027 or 2028 — informed speculation, not fact. Our PC release explainer tracks every signal.
Datamined PS4-linked title IDs surfaced in early 2026, suggesting an abandoned last-gen build, but Rockstar scrubbed the listings and confirmed nothing. No install size is published for either console; the viral "676.7GB" figure was traced to a parody account and is fake.
Engine & Technical Details
GTA 6 runs on Rockstar's in-house RAGE engine. Rockstar's only first-party technical claim is that Trailer 2 was captured in-game on a base PS5. Everything else is expert analysis:
- Digital Foundry reads Trailer 2 as roughly 1440p upscaled to 4K at 30fps, with fully ray-traced global illumination, ray-traced reflections on smaller water bodies, and screen-space reflections elsewhere.
- Analysis of an 8-second aerial flyover hidden in the official site's code found 4K/30 output and what appears to be a ray-traced reflection distance limit.
- A single-source report from Polish podcast Rock and Borys describes a 30fps quality mode and a 60fps performance mode in development — with the 60fps mode possibly arriving post-launch. Rockstar has announced no frame-rate targets at all, and Digital Foundry considers launch 60fps unlikely.
A former Rockstar graphics programmer's LinkedIn described building a "next-generation procedural breakable glass system" for GTA 6 — real-time unique fracture patterns rather than pre-baked shatters. The profile was scrubbed within hours of being reported.
Development History & the 2022 Leak
GTA 6 is developed across Rockstar's global studios and publishing under Take-Two, which has guided fiscal 2027 to record net bookings of $8.0–8.2 billion on the strength of the launch. Zelnick's one-line answer for why it took so long: Rockstar "really does seek to do something that's never been done before. That's really hard, and it takes a lot of time."
In September 2022, GTA 6 suffered one of the biggest leaks in gaming history: roughly 90 in-development clips posted by Lapsus$ member Arion Kurtaj — carried out from a hotel room using an Amazon Fire TV Stick while on bail. Rockstar confirmed the breach within 48 hours (the only large-scale GTA 6 leak it has ever confirmed as genuine) and later said it did not delay the game. The leak's contents proved remarkably accurate: the Vice City setting, both protagonists, the prison opening, and the state of Leonida all matched later official reveals — our leak accuracy scorecard grades every claim.
GTA 6 carries generational commercial expectations: GTA 5 has sold over 230 million copies, the franchise nearly 470 million, and analysts project first-week GTA 6 sales in the tens of millions. Circana reports the highest purchase intent it has ever recorded, and the release has visibly warped the industry calendar — Microsoft moved Fable to February 2027 to escape the launch window entirely.
Music, Radio & World Flavor
Confirmed music so far comes from Rockstar's own trailers: Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" (Trailer 1), and Trailer 2's The Pointer Sisters ("Hot Together"), Wang Chung, Tammy Wynette, Haitian konpa group Zenglen, and Jay Ferguson. The only confirmed radio station is V-Rock, the returning Vice City rock station, spotted via Jason's t-shirt. Several artists have prematurely announced (then deleted) their GTA 6 involvement — a pattern that tends to confirm rather than deny.
Zelnick has confirmed GTA 6 will feature no real-world brands: "It's a fictional world and everything in it is fictional... all the brands are made up." Instead, datamined Take-Two domain registrations — what-up.app, rydeme.app, leonidagov.org and friends — hint at the parody apps and websites of Leonida's in-game internet, following a tradition where GTA's fictional sites become real browsable pages.
Easter-egg hunters have already found Red Dead Redemption 2's fictional presidents on Trailer 2's dollar bills, a Vercetti-print iguana mural, and Phil Cassidy's Ammu-Nation — fuel for the long-running (and never Rockstar-confirmed) shared-universe theory.
