The widely circulated claim that the Australian Classification Board rated Grand Theft Auto VI MA 15+ is a forgery, debunked in October 2023, roughly two years before many of the sites now quoting it picked it up.

The forensic tells

The fake listing carries classification number CLAS-121212, against GTA V's genuine 258907. Its publisher field reads "Rockstar Games" in mixed case, where genuine Rockstar submissions to the board appear in all caps. And it was filed through the International Age Rating Coalition self-classification route, a free pipeline that lets publishers of digital-only releases classify their own titles, and an open door for anyone willing to type a famous name into a form. A PCGamesN writer tested exactly that hole and reported that "within less than an hour I was able to fill out a submission form that could potentially pass for a real listing", and PCGamesN obtained a board statement calling the listing "unfortunately erroneous".

A spoof cluster, not a lone prank

A NeoGAF thread dated October 11, 2023 recorded parallel spoof listings for "GTA VI Beta" and "GTA VI Online", one naming "discord.gg/modder" as its production company. Google still indexes at least five duplicate board slugs for the title, one titled with an emoji and one padded with invisible U+3164 Hangul filler characters, a spoof-cluster signature rather than an administrative pattern. There is precedent for the method: a fake "Bloodborne Mobile" listing reached the same board in 2022.

Why it still matters

Outlets including GamingBible, MP1st and KickstartGame have republished the MA 15+ figure as fact, and at least one piece analysed why "Drug Use" was missing from the descriptors, which means analysing the forger's typing. Any "Rockstar toned GTA 6 down" argument built on the listing rests on nothing. For the genuine state of play see rating status.
