Ray tracing is the strongest technical thread in expert reads of GTA 6 footage, and none of it comes from Rockstar. The studio's only claim is that Trailer 2 was captured in-game on a base PS5; the lighting detail below is analyst interpretation of official material.
Digital Foundry's read
According to Digital Foundry's analysis of Trailer 2, GTA 6 uses a fully ray-traced global illumination system. Ray-traced reflections appear on smaller bodies of water, while large water, glass and plastic surfaces fall back to screen-space reflections, a practical split that spends the ray-tracing budget where it shows most on console hardware. DF's Oliver Mackenzie also flagged screen-space shadows on NPCs and suggested Rockstar uses ray tracing or parallax tricks to fake three-dimensional rooms behind windows, a technique unpacked on the graphics analysis page.
The Ferris wheel tell
HotHardware's frame analysis of the hidden website flyover clip (June 21, 2026) reported ray-traced global illumination plus one telling omission: the bayside Ferris wheel casts no reflection in the adjacent water. The outlet reads that as a distance limit on ray-traced reflections, with reflections traced near the camera and culled further out, a standard console performance compromise.
