RAGE Engine
Rockstar's in-house RAGE engine powers GTA 6. What Rockstar has confirmed, what analysts have inferred, and which technical claims remain unverified.

GTA 6 runs on RAGE, Rockstar's in-house engine, the technology community analysts routinely name when measuring the game against Grand Theft Auto V (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Rockstar's previous open worlds. Rockstar itself has published almost nothing about the engine's internals for GTA 6: the studio's only technical claim on record is that Trailer 2 "was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5", on a base console, mixing equal parts gameplay and cutscenes.
Confirmed versus analysis
Everything more specific comes from outside analysis. Digital Foundry reads the footage as a fully ray-traced global illumination system with ray-traced reflections on smaller bodies of water and screen-space effects elsewhere, running at roughly 1440p upscaled to 4K at 30fps. Those are estimates, not Rockstar specs. A Reddit frame study of one official screenshot counted roughly 14,287 trees and extrapolated that the engine pushes at least four times RDR2's foliage density; the count is careful fan work, and the multiplier is extrapolation stacked on an estimate. Full breakdowns sit on the graphics analysis and ray tracing pages, and in our Trailer 2 technical breakdown.
Claims to hold loosely
- Water physics budget: a circulating report that around 20 engineers and $200-300 million went into the water simulation is unverified and should not be repeated as fact.
- Procedural destruction: a scrubbed LinkedIn profile described a procedural breakable glass system, a credible but unannounced leak.
- Frame-level detail: community analysis of more than 5,000 trailer frames spotted independently simulated coins in register drawers and visible body-hair rendering, fan observation of official footage.
Until Rockstar publishes real technical detail, the engine picture is a single confirmed capture claim surrounded by well-labelled expert inference.
