The first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer was scheduled to premiere on December 5, 2023, but it never got the chance to arrive on time. The footage leaked the night before, and Rockstar responded by publishing the real thing on December 4. At 1 minute 31 seconds, it confirmed the return of Vice City, introduced Lucia Caminos to the wider world, and attached the game's first public launch window: Fall 2025, a target that would slip twice before settling on the final release date.

The trailer was built around a single needle-drop: Love Is a Long Road, a 1989 track by Tom Petty, the American heartland-rock songwriter. The placement carried real commercial weight, with the song's streams reportedly rising by roughly 36,979 percent afterwards.

The numbers made history. Guinness World Records recognizes Trailer 1 as the most viewed video game reveal trailer on YouTube in 24 hours, at exactly 90,421,491 views, a record recognized on December 5, 2023. Part of the reason the figure climbed so high is distribution: the trailer was a YouTube exclusive, so every bit of launch-day demand funneled into a single counter.

That release decision still matters. When Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025 spread across every platform at once, it smashed the all-platform 24-hour record but fell short of Trailer 1's YouTube-only mark, which reached roughly 70 to 75 million in the same window. Both records belong to GTA 6, and the only real competition for either was Rockstar's own previous trailer.
