How big are GTA 6 pre-orders? The honest answer: enormous by every independent signal, and unquantified by any official one. Rockstar and Take-Two have published no figures, which has made the demand story a case study in separating real data from viral fiction.

The analyst read. Analytics firm Newzoo called GTA 6's campaign "the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded," modeling roughly $180 million in first-week digital pre-orders across the US and top five European markets and about $260 million globally, with a launch-week projection of 37 to 51 million copies sold. All of it is modeling, built on GTA 5's geographic player distribution with a proven-sequel sales curve applied, and Newzoo itself notes pre-orders are under 6 percent of its projected first week. Useful for scale; not a count of receipts.

The retail signals. French retailer Cdiscount reported six times more GTA 6 pre-orders in 24 hours than Call of Duty or EA FC managed across their entire pre-order periods, with site traffic up around 500 percent on opening day. IGN's affiliate tracking showed PlayStation outselling Xbox roughly 8-to-1, later revised nearer 6-to-1, prompting a Microsoft spokesperson to push back: "This doesn't represent pre-order data. We've had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links." Affiliate clicks are a signal rather than a scoreboard, but "record orders" is itself a demand claim.

The debunked numbers. A viral claim of 39 million pre-orders and $3 billion in revenue traces back to an unsourced ValueTainment social post and was debunked within days of circulating. The companion claim of $1 billion in pre-orders within an hour was flagged as implausible by Newzoo itself. Neither has any official backing, and both keep resurfacing anyway.

The defensible summary: record-breaking demand is well supported by retailer data, platform statements and analyst modeling, while every specific viral total is either an estimate or a fabrication. Accountable numbers can only come from Take-Two's own disclosures. Where orders opened is at pre-orders; how the prices landed is at price history.
