Will your GTA Online money, characters, properties and rank follow you into GTA 6's eventual online mode? As of August 2026 the answer is that Rockstar has not said, and the signals lean one way.

No carry-over announced

Rockstar has confirmed no transfer of any GTA Online progress into GTA 6. Reporting through mid-2026 describes the signals as pointing to a clean slate, and that is the sensible reading of a sequel whose online component is not even announced yet. Treat "no carry-over" as the likely outcome rather than settled policy: until Rockstar states it directly, it remains reporting and expectation. The precedent is not encouraging for hoarders, either, since GTA Online itself started fresh from GTA 4's multiplayer era.

GTA Online is not shutting down

What is confirmed is that the current game continues. On Take-Two's February 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA Online support continues "as long as players engage" after GTA 6 launches, with no sunset date. Take-Two backed that up with content: the confirmed summer 2026 update, The Kortz Center Heist, arrived on July 14, 2026 with purchasable mansions, an art-gallery raid and counterfeiting activities.

The "final update" label

Each recent GTA Online drop has been branded a farewell by parts of the community, and the label keeps failing. December 2025's "A Safehouse in the Hills" was widely expected to be the goodbye DLC before the summer update was announced.
