FiveM is the multiplayer modification platform for GTA V: it lets communities run their own servers with custom game modes, scripts and assets, and it is the technology under nearly all of GTA roleplay.
From cease-and-desist to acquisition
In 2015 Rockstar described FiveM as an "unauthorized alternate multiplayer service." In August 2023 Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind it, completing one of gaming's stranger reversals. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick later explained the logic plainly: "there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who like to engage with GTA in this way. How about if instead of trying to beat them, we join them?"
Bigger than ever in 2026
FiveM's numbers peaked in the GTA 6 run-up. It appeared on Steam's tracking on December 9, 2025, crossed 200,000 concurrent players for the first time with a 202,756 peak on March 15, 2026, then hit 215,265 on April 12, 2026, with 30-day averages reported around 127,000. It is also now the only sanctioned option: rivals alt:V and RAGE:MP were both wound down in 2026 under Take-Two's platform licensing, with the RAGE:MP announcement quoted as saying Rockstar and Take-Two "have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTAV multiplayer modding." A next-generation client, FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, entered early access on July 21, 2026.
Why it cannot run GTA 6 at launch
FiveM is not a generic launcher. It hooks into GTA V's engine, memory layout and scripting API, so supporting GTA 6 would mean rebuilding against a different game's internals, and GTA 6 ships console-only with no PC version dated, leaving no platform to build on. GTA 6 roleplay will come later, through whatever official path Rockstar ships; the realistic timeline is laid out in our explainer for server owners.
