Rockstar has confirmed two playable leads but no switching mechanic. The three-option wheel and D-pad switch are leaks; June 2026 materials stayed silent.

Character switching in GTA 6 is a status question, not a confirmed feature. Rockstar has confirmed that Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are both playable protagonists — Lucia being the first female lead in mainline GTA history — but has never detailed how players move between them, or confirmed that free switching exists at all.

The GTA 5 precedent

GTA 5 established real-time switching across Michael, Franklin and Trevor, including mid-mission, and that mechanic is the obvious foundation for any dual-protagonist system.
