Region Locking
PlayStation codes lock to nine account-based regions, Xbox codes to none, and Japanese codes expire May 8, 2027 under a 170-day rule.

Because the physical edition is a download code with no disc fallback, GTA 6's region rules matter more than usual: a code that will not redeem leaves the box with nothing playable inside. Rockstar's support pages state the rule directly: "Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account."
The two consoles are treated very differently. Xbox codes are not region-locked, full stop. PlayStation codes must match the buyer's account region across nine groupings Rockstar lists: Brazil; LATAM; North America; Korea; Japan; the United Kingdom; Saudi Arabia and UAE; a Rest of Asia group; and a sprawling Rest of EMEA and Asia group covering most of Europe plus Australia, New Zealand, India and others.
The grouping that catches people out is the UK, which sits in a region entirely of its own, separate from Ireland and the rest of Europe. A cheap boxed copy from a German or Irish retailer will not match a UK PlayStation account, and the reverse is equally true. Rockstar's stated advice is to buy from a retailer in the country of your platform account.
Japan adds a deadline on top. Rockstar's support page states: "Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations." That lands on May 8, 2027, and the code must also be redeemed on a Japan-registered PlayStation account. Rockstar names no specific law; the widely reported explanation, that Japan's Payment Services Act exempts prepaid instruments expiring within six months from registration requirements, is outlet and community inference, plausible but unconfirmed. No expiry is published for any other region.
Why PlayStation and Xbox are treated differently has never been explained by Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. Which countries can order at all is a separate patchwork, covered at pre-orders.
