RAGE:MP Shuts Down August 31, Leaving FiveM Alone
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news8 min read
RAGE:MP goes fully dark on August 31, 2026, one month from now, with alt:V already gone since July 6. From September 1, FiveM is the only authorised GTAV multiplayer modding platform under Take-Two's Platform License Agreement. The problem is that FiveM Enhanced is one week into early access and asset escrow is not available.
On August 31, 2026, the RAGE:MP backend is deactivated. The client and the server toolsets stop functioning on the same day. That is roughly one month away, and from September 1 FiveM is the only GTAV multiplayer modding platform still running.
The wind-down itself was announced two months ago. The month it finally lands in is the problem.
What actually stops working
Kotaku (Zack Zwiezen, May 26, 2026) and Dexerto (James Busby, May 26, 2026) both reported the RAGE:MP announcement. Neither states the announcement's title in its prose. Dexerto links it at a rage.mp URL whose slug reads "long-term-eco-system-integration-pt-ii-final-outreach-cd", which is the only trace of a title anywhere in the coverage, and we could not read the original post ourselves. So we are describing what the outlets report the announcement said, not quoting a document we have opened.
On August 31, 2026 the backend infrastructure is deactivated and the core game client and server toolsets no longer function. Neither outlet describes an offline mode, a self-hosted fallback or a grace period after that date. A RAGE:MP server that is still on RAGE:MP on September 1 is not a server any more.
The milestones already passed
Two of the three stages are behind us.
Late May 2026: No new servers could go live. The exact date is reported inconsistently. Dexerto describes new server registrations stopping immediately on the cease and desist, while Kotaku's May 26 piece frames the block as taking effect that day. Some coverage dates it May 25. The distinction does not matter for anyone still operating.
June 1, 2026: The master public server listing was switched off permanently. Players could no longer browse RAGE:MP servers from the client.
August 31, 2026: Full deactivation.
The middle stage is the one that has already done the damage. A roleplay community without a public listing loses its discovery channel and stops replacing the players it bleeds. Communities that have been running since June have been running on their existing playerbase alone.
alt:V went first, and it is already gone
RockstarINTEL reported the alt:V shutdown on February 10, 2026, in a piece bylined Aaron Trueman, on the same contractual basis. The phased timeline ran ahead of RAGE:MP's: no new community servers from March 2, 2026, the public server listing switched off on May 4, 2026, and the platform and its community servers fully inoperable by July 6, 2026.
That last date has passed. alt:V is finished, and its shutdown is the closest thing available to a preview of what August 31 looks like for RAGE:MP communities. It happened three weeks ago.
RockstarINTEL quotes the alt:V team acknowledging the news was tough for developers and players alike, and saying that as FiveM is now Rockstar Games' official platform for modding-based experiences, they had done their best to give server owners extra time to move.
Take-Two's stated basis
The mechanism is contractual rather than legal in the abstract. Per the RAGE:MP announcement as quoted by Dexerto, "Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTAV multiplayer modding". PC Gamer reported the same shutdown and the same basis: the Platform License Agreement under which FiveM holds that authorisation.
Kotaku reports that Take-Two requested the shutdown and that FiveM has been owned by Rockstar Games and Take-Two since 2023. The RAGE:MP team also thanked its community, writing that all of them had put a huge amount of time and energy into building RAGE:MP.
Two platforms, the same agreement, the same outcome. The announcements came three and a half months apart, on February 10 and May 26, 2026, and the final shutdowns fall under two months apart, on July 6 and August 31. Consolidation onto one authorised platform is effectively complete.
The timing collision
Here is the awkward part, and it is the reason this story is worth writing two months after the shutdown was announced.
RAGE:MP communities have to land on FiveM inside the same window in which FiveM's own next-generation platform is unfinished. FiveM for GTAV Enhanced entered early access on July 21, 2026, per Cfx.re's own announcement post on the Cfx Forum, which states that "This is an early access version of the framework that will contain bugs and missing features". Cfx.re shipped hotfixes on July 21, 22, 23, 24 and 27, and moved bug intake to the public citizenfx/rfc repository on GitHub.
Asset escrow, the mechanism that protects paid and encrypted resources, is not available in the early access build, and Cfx.re has announced no date for it. Be careful with how that gets reported. The July 21 announcement post does not mention asset escrow, and neither does Development Update #3. The widely repeated advice that production servers should stay on Legacy until escrow arrives comes from hosting providers and community migration guides, and we have not found a Cfx.re statement saying it.
So a RAGE:MP operator with a month left has two options and both are compromised. Migrating to FiveM Legacy means moving onto the older platform in order to move again later. Migrating to FiveM Enhanced means adopting a platform that shipped five hotfixes in its first seven days and cannot yet protect paid assets. Neither is a mistake. Neither is comfortable.
Migration means rewriting the framework
RAGE:MP hosted heavy roleplay communities, GTA World among the best known, that never ran on FiveM tooling. That is the actual cost here and it is routinely understated.
RAGE:MP and FiveM are different frameworks with different client APIs, different server runtimes, different event models and different resource structures. A serious RAGE:MP gamemode cannot simply be copied across. Scripts get rewritten. Custom UI gets rebuilt. Data layers get remapped. Years of accumulated server-specific tooling gets re-implemented against a different set of natives.
We are not going to characterise any specific community's migration plans. We tried to read GTA World's July 2026 community update and both forum.gta.world and gta.world returned HTTP 403 errors, so we cannot tell you what they have decided or announced. Their plans are unconfirmed as far as this article is concerned.
What server owners should be doing this month
The practical position, stated plainly.
Export your data now, well before August 30. Once the backend is deactivated, anything you have not exported is a question for your own database backups rather than for RAGE:MP.
Decide Legacy or Enhanced deliberately. If your server depends on escrowed paid assets, Enhanced cannot currently protect them. If your server does not, Enhanced is the platform you will end up on eventually anyway.
Read the open bug threads before committing. The citizenfx/rfc repository makes the Enhanced backlog publicly readable, which is a genuinely new thing for this ecosystem and worth using.
Tell your players a date. Communities that go dark on August 31 without a stated destination do not reassemble. Discovery on FiveM starts from zero either way.
Budget for a full rewrite. If your estimate assumes a port, the estimate is wrong.
Confirmed, reported and unconfirmed
Confirmed (Kotaku and Dexerto, May 26, 2026, and PC Gamer): RAGE:MP's backend is fully deactivated on August 31, 2026, with the core game client and server toolsets ceasing to function on that date.
Confirmed (same reporting): The public server listing was switched off on June 1, 2026, and new servers could no longer go live from late May 2026. Outlets date the new-server block inconsistently between May 25 and May 26.
Confirmed (Dexerto quoting the RAGE:MP announcement): "Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTAV multiplayer modding". PC Gamer reports the Platform License Agreement as the basis.
Confirmed (Kotaku, May 26, 2026): Take-Two requested the shutdown, and FiveM has been owned by Rockstar Games and Take-Two since 2023.
Confirmed (RockstarINTEL, Aaron Trueman, February 10, 2026): alt:V blocked new community servers from March 2, 2026, switched off its public server listing on May 4, 2026, and became fully inoperable on July 6, 2026. That platform is already gone.
Confirmed (Cfx.re announcement, July 21, 2026, and our own prior reporting): FiveM for GTAV Enhanced entered early access on July 21, 2026 and is described by Cfx.re as "an early access version of the framework that will contain bugs and missing features". Hotfixes shipped on July 21, 22, 23, 24 and 27. Bug intake moved to the public citizenfx/rfc GitHub repository.
Confirmed, with a sourcing correction: Asset escrow is not available in the Enhanced early access build and Cfx.re has announced no date for it. The July 21 announcement post does not mention escrow and neither does Development Update #3. The "stay on Legacy until escrow ships" advice comes from hosting providers and community guides, and we have found no Cfx.re statement saying it.
Not verified, do not repeat as a title: The RAGE:MP announcement's name. No outlet states it in prose. Dexerto links the post at a rage.mp URL whose slug reads "long-term-eco-system-integration-pt-ii-final-outreach-cd". We could not read the original announcement.
Our analysis, labelled as such: That a Legacy migration is a move you will have to make twice, and that an Enhanced migration in August 2026 means adopting a platform in its second week of early access. Both readings are ours, not anyone's statement.
Not confirmed: GTA World's migration plans, or any specific RAGE:MP community's. Both forum.gta.world and gta.world returned HTTP 403 errors when we tried to read the July 2026 community update, so we make no claim about what they have announced.
Not confirmed: Any extension to the August 31 date, any Take-Two statement beyond the Platform License Agreement basis, any asset escrow date for Enhanced, any end-of-life date for FiveM Legacy, and any relationship between any of this and GTA 6, on which Cfx.re and Rockstar have said nothing.
One platform closed on July 6 and another closes on August 31, which leaves the GTAV roleplay scene running entirely on a platform whose successor is barely a week into early access. Server owners with a month left should be exporting data this week. We will track the shutdown and the Enhanced backlog on our news hub, and you can see which communities are already rebuilding on our servers list.
