GTA 6 Pre-Orders: 6.45 Million, and Whose They Are
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news10 min read
THE NEW FINDING IS THE SCOPE AND THE EDITION MIX IS A CORROBORATION OF THIS SITE'S OWN AUGUST REPORTING. EVERY PRE-ORDER FIGURE HERE IS A RELAY THROUGH A NAMED OUTLET, BECAUSE SENSOR TOWER'S OWN PUBLICATION WAS NEVER REACHED. sensortower.com/blog returned HTTP 200 at 222,624 then 223,143 bytes on two reads between 2026-10-21T03:04:58Z and 03:05:09Z and carries NO Grand Theft Auto post anywhere on the index. THE 20 OCTOBER RELAY: notebookcheck.net at HTTP 200 and 112,564 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:03:38Z, JSON-LD datePublished 2026-10-20T18:36:00+02:00 and dateModified 2026-10-20T18:36:12+02:00, visible byline "Vineet Washington, Published 10/20/2026", giving $630 million from 6.45 million pre-orders, 74% on PlayStation 5 amounting to $468 million and Xbox at 26% accounting for $162 million, launch week projected at "up to $5.2 billion globally" and investment given as "reportedly over $2 billion". techpowerup.com returned HTTP 403 at 3,362 bytes to this desk's user agent and ITS BODY WAS NOT READ; mezha.net returned HTTP 403 at 5,816 bytes and is not relied on. THE 13 OCTOBER READING, READ FIRST HAND AND EXPLICITLY SCOPED: wnhub.io/news/analytics/item-52448 at HTTP 200 and 327,113 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:14:57Z, carrying verbatim "This analysis by Sensor Tower focuses solely on digital preorders within the United States and does not include physical editions." and "As of October 13, it is estimated that 6.08 million units of "GTA 6" have been preordered, generating approximately $594 million in revenue." with the same 74% and 26% split and a reference to "the $100 ultimate edition". THE DESK'S OWN ARITHMETIC, INPUTS SHOWN SO A READER CAN REDO IT: $468,000,000 plus $162,000,000 equals $630,000,000 exactly; 74% plus 26% equals 100%, leaving NO PC SHARE in the mix; 6,450,000 times 74% gives 4,773,000 PlayStation units and $468,000,000 divided by that is $98.05; 6,450,000 times 26% gives 1,677,000 Xbox units and $162,000,000 divided by that is $96.60; the blended 20 October average is $630,000,000 over 6,450,000, or $97.6744; the 13 October average is $594,000,000 over 6,080,000, or $97.6974; and the week between is 370,000 units and $36,000,000, or $97.2973 per marginal unit. ALL THREE AVERAGES SIT INSIDE A 0.4% BAND AND THE PLATFORM SPLIT IS IDENTICAL AT BOTH READINGS. THE CONCLUSION, LABELLED AS THIS DESK'S INFERENCE AND NOT AS SENSOR TOWER'S STATEMENT: United States digital pre-orders cannot plausibly be 94% of worldwide digital pre-orders, so a scope that had switched would have moved the unit count by a large multiple rather than by 6.1%, and the 20 October figure is very probably UNITED STATES DIGITAL ONLY as well. THIS DESK DOES NOT CLAIM SENSOR TOWER SAID SO. A CORROBORATION RATHER THAN A SCOOP, AND THE DESK OVERSOLD IT INTERNALLY. THIS SITE PUBLISHED AN 89% ULTIMATE EDITION SHARE ON 14 AUGUST 2026, from an estimate attributed to Sensor Tower, so what follows reproduces a published figure from independent inputs. ALL THREE STEPS ARE PRINTED BECAUSE THE PROCESS IS THE POINT RATHER THAN THE NUMBER. STEP ONE: solving 99.99x plus 79.99 times (1 minus x) equals 97.6744 gives x = 0.8842, so roughly 88% of those pre-orders carry Ultimate Edition pricing, and the 13 October average of 97.6974 gives x = 0.8853 independently. STEP TWO, THE WITHDRAWAL: the editor noticed the $99.99 had come from a search summary rather than any page this desk had read, went to Rockstar's own store, and found that the ONLY PRICE LITERAL ANYWHERE IN THE PAYLOAD IS 79.99, with exactly two purchasable SKUs and two schema.org offers all at 79.99 USD and the Ultimate Edition block carrying no price node and no SKU record, so the number was PULLED. STEP THREE, THE RESTORATION: RESEARCHER 1 FOUND THE PRICE ON MICROSOFT'S DISPLAY CATALOGUE API, a surface the editor never tried, and the editor verified it at HTTP 200 and 118,373 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:18:56Z, parsed from Products[].DisplaySkuAvailabilities[].Availabilities[] where Actions contains Purchase: Standard 79.99 USD, Ultimate 99.99 USD, Upgrade 20.00 USD. AND THE ANSWER IT PRODUCES IS ONE THIS SITE HAD ALREADY PRINTED: 88.4% today against 89% in August, from independent inputs, is worth one paragraph and is not a discovery. CAVEATS THAT RIDE WITH IT: it is an inference from a third party estimate and inherits its error; it assumes only two price points, and the $20 upgrade complicates the unit count but not the revenue because 79.99 plus 20.00 reaches the same 99.99; and the $100 figure is also attributable to a named outlet, separately from Microsoft's catalogue. AN OPEN QUESTION WITH NO GUESS ATTACHED: both readings exclude physical editions and Rockstar's physical box contains a download code, and whether a boxed code counts as a digital pre-order in Sensor Tower's methodology IS NOT ESTABLISHED ANYWHERE THIS DESK READ. LIMITS: Take-Two and Rockstar have confirmed nothing; a remark attributed to Take-Two's chief executive was not read at any primary source and is left out entirely; and two guessed Ultimate Edition store URLs returned HTTP 404, which is evidence about the guess. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows ClaudeBot by name and this desk's fetches use a standard desktop browser user agent against specific public URLs rather than crawling.
Grand Theft Auto VI is being credited with 6.45 million pre-orders and $630 million, and almost none of the coverage says which pre-orders those are. They are very probably United States digital pre-orders only, because the 13 October reading of the same estimate says so in plain words and the per-unit averages of the two readings sit within 0.4% of each other. This article shows that arithmetic, and then prints an edition mix figure that corroborates one this site published in August rather than breaking new ground.
The figures, and who actually published them
The 20 October relay this desk read is notebookcheck.net, HTTP 200 at 112,564 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:03:38Z, JSON-LD datePublished 2026-10-20T18:36:00+02:00 and dateModified 2026-10-20T18:36:12+02:00, which is 16:36 UTC, with a visible byline reading "Vineet Washington, Published 10/20/2026". As published: $630 million from 6.45 million pre-orders, 74% on PlayStation 5 amounting to $468 million, and Xbox at 26% accounting for $162 million, with launch week projected at "up to $5.2 billion globally" and development and marketing investment given as "reportedly over $2 billion".
Sensor Tower's own publication was never reached by this desk. sensortower.com/blog returned HTTP 200 at 222,624 and then 223,143 bytes on two reads between 2026-10-21T03:04:58Z and 03:05:09Z, and no Grand Theft Auto or GTA post appears anywhere on that index. A second outlet carrying the same figures, techpowerup.com, returned HTTP 403 at 3,362 bytes to this desk's user agent with the title "403 - Access Denied", so it is referenced by headline only and its body was not read. A third, mezha.net, returned HTTP 403 at 5,816 bytes and is not relied on. Every pre-order number below is a relay through a named outlet, and Take-Two and Rockstar have published none of them.
The scope conflict, and the surface that resolves it
Outlets do not agree on geography. Some describe the prior 6.08 million figure of 13 October as United States only, while others present 6.45 million as worldwide. A switch from one to the other between two readings would make the week-over-week delta meaningless, so the conflict is printed rather than hidden.
The 13 October reading was read first hand at wnhub.io/news/analytics/item-52448, HTTP 200 at 327,113 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:14:57Z, and it states the scope explicitly: "This analysis by Sensor Tower focuses solely on digital preorders within the United States and does not include physical editions." The same page carries the estimate itself: "As of October 13, it is estimated that 6.08 million units of "GTA 6" have been preordered, generating approximately $594 million in revenue. The analysis shows 74% of these preorders on PlayStation and 26% on Xbox, with a significant proportion opting for the $100 ultimate edition."
The desk's own arithmetic, with every input shown
These are the editor's calculations from the two relayed readings. Redo them if you like.

Average per marginal unit in the week between$36,000,000 divided by 370,000$97.2973
All three averages sit inside a 0.4% band of each other, and the platform split is identical at both readings at 74% and 26%. United States digital pre-orders cannot plausibly be 94% of worldwide digital pre-orders, so a scope that had switched from one to the other between the two readings would have moved the unit count by a large multiple rather than by 6.1%. This desk's inference, labelled as an inference: the arithmetic is consistent with one unchanged scope across both readings and is not consistent with a switch to worldwide, so the 20 October figure is very probably United States digital only as well, and the worldwide framing some outlets attach to it looks like an outlet error rather than a change in methodology. This desk does not claim Sensor Tower said the 6.45 million figure is United States only, because Sensor Tower's own publication was never reached.
An official Rockstar Grand Theft Auto VI screenshot from Rockstar's own media pages, included to illustrate the piece. It is a published in-engine still and it carries none of the estimates, prices or arithmetic discussed here.
A corroboration, not a scoop, and the desk oversold it internally
This site published an Ultimate Edition share figure on 14 August 2026, reporting an estimate attributed to Sensor Tower that put 89% of tracked pre-orders on the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. What follows is today's independent arithmetic reproducing that figure from different inputs, and it is worth having for that reason and for no larger one. The editor's working notes billed the sequence below as a major restoration. It is a recomputation of a number this site already ran, and saying so is more useful than the billing was.
Step one, the draft. The blended $97.6744 average sits between two known price points, so it can be solved for a mix. The editor solved 99.99x plus 79.99 times (1 minus x) equals 97.6744 and got x = 0.8842, concluding that roughly 88% of United States digital pre-orders, near enough seven in eight, carry Ultimate Edition pricing. The 13 October reading gives the same answer independently: 97.6974 solves to x = 0.8853.
Step two, the withdrawal. The editor then noticed that the $99.99 in that equation had come from a search summary and from secondary coverage rather than from any page this desk had read, went to Rockstar's own store to check it, and could not confirm it there. Parsed from the JSON rather than by proximity, store.rockstargames.com/game/buy-gta-vi carries exactly two purchasable SKU records and exactly two schema.org offers, all four at 79.99 USD, and a regex for price, amount, value and displayPrice numbers across the whole unescaped payload returns the single value 79.99. The Ultimate Edition is on the page, as the second item in a two-item comparison module, and it carries no price node and no SKU record. The editor withdrew the mix number and instructed that no edition mix figure appear in this batch.
Step three, the restoration. Researcher 1 found the price on a surface the editor had never tried, Microsoft's own display catalogue API, and the editor verified it first hand: displaycatalog.mp.microsoft.com for bigIds 9PN4LLBR8RCH, 9P3H4968GRSM and 9NNZSNHLR63L at market US, HTTP 200 at 118,373 bytes at 2026-10-21T03:18:56Z, parsed from Products[].DisplaySkuAvailabilities[].Availabilities[] where Actions contains Purchase, then OrderManagementData.Price.ListPrice. Standard Edition 79.99 USD, Ultimate Edition 99.99 USD, Ultimate Edition Upgrade 20.00 USD. With two independent surfaces carrying the two prices the inference needs, it is restored.
The editor's earlier statement that the Ultimate price "was not established by this desk" was half right. It is genuinely absent from Rockstar's page. It was not absent from the internet, and a researcher checking a different catalogue found it in one call.
And the answer it produces is one this site had already printed. 88.4% today against 89% in August, from independent inputs, is a corroboration worth one paragraph. It is not a discovery, and the three steps are published above because the process is the point rather than the number.
The caveats that ride with the restored number
It is an inference from a third party estimate and it inherits every bit of that estimate's error. Nothing about it is a published figure.
It assumes the mix contains only those two price points. The $20 upgrade complicates the unit count but not the revenue, because Standard at $79.99 plus the upgrade at $20.00 reaches the same $99.99.
The $100 Ultimate price is also attributable to a named outlet, the 13 October surface quoted above, and that attribution is separate from Microsoft's catalogue reading. Neither is Rockstar's own storefront, where the price is absent.
A genuinely open question, with no guess attached
Both readings are described as digital and as excluding physical editions. Rockstar's physical box contains a download code and no disc, which this desk published in July 2026 and re-verified this cycle. Whether a boxed download code counts as a digital pre-order in Sensor Tower's methodology is not established anywhere this desk read. The question is stated and no answer is offered.
Limits
Nothing here is confirmed by Take-Two or Rockstar. Neither has published a pre-order number. A remark attributed to Take-Two's chief executive circulates in this coverage and was not read first hand at any primary source, so it is left out entirely rather than relayed.
Sensor Tower's own release was not reached. That is the single biggest limit on this story and it applies to every figure in it.
Two guessed Ultimate Edition store URLs returned HTTP 404 at roughly 217,660 bytes each at 2026-10-21T03:07:34Z. A 404 on a URL this desk invented is evidence about the guess rather than about the product, so nothing is claimed about whether the Ultimate Edition is purchasable on Rockstar's store, and nothing is claimed about a price having been removed.
This desk has published pre-order estimate corrections before, and it published an 89% Ultimate Edition share on 14 August 2026, so the edition mix section above is a corroboration of its own prior reporting and is labelled that way. The genuinely new finding in this piece is the scope resolution. The three-step arc is printed in full rather than presented as a figure that was solid all along.
Retrieval method, disclosed. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows ClaudeBot by name and this desk's fetches use a standard desktop browser user agent against specific public URLs rather than crawling.
