PEGI Returns Zero Results for GTA 6 at 72 Days Out
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news8 min read
Ratings pending at this stage is ordinary and nothing here suggests a delay or a refusal. What we can show is narrow and checkable: the PEGI endpoint returned HTTP 200 at 221,839 bytes with zero results at 03:05:16 UTC on 8 September, while the same endpoint returned real cards for Grand Theft Auto V and the Definitive Edition trilogy at 03:05:03 UTC. We quote PEGI's own boilerplate in full, because it supplies the innocent explanation that a title may be published on a platform the database does not cover. Sony's consumer FAQ says the age ratings "are unconfirmed". Microsoft's catalog carries a PEGI value with a P suffix we cannot explain and are not guessing about. We could not query the ESRB database at all today, so this article makes no claim about it in either direction.
Ask PEGI's own public database about Grand Theft Auto VI today and it tells you, in these exact words, "Found 0 results from your query". The game ships in 72 days.
Start with the part that stops this being a scandal. Ratings pending at this stage is ordinary. A classification can be issued and published close to release, and a database can lag behind a decision by weeks. Nothing below suggests a delay, a refusal, or any risk that this game does not get rated in time. What it does show is that the most-quoted European ratings source has nothing in it, that Sony says in plain prose on its own site that the ratings are unconfirmed, and that a piece of platform metadata sits oddly against both.
The query, and the control that proves the search works
CONFIRMED, retrieved personally. The PEGI search endpoint was queried for "Grand Theft Auto VI" at 03:05:16 UTC on 8 September 2026, returning HTTP 200, 221,839 bytes. The rendered results region reads, verbatim and in full:
Search results Found 0 results from your query No results found The title of the game you were searching for cannot be found in this database. This may mean it was not classified by PEGI, but it may also mean it was published on a platform that is not included in this database. If you know the platform where this game can be played, we recommend that you search there as well: if available, it will also tell you about the PEGI age rating.
We have quoted that whole block rather than the first six words, because the second half is PEGI's own caveat and leaving it out would misrepresent the source. PEGI itself offers the innocent explanation. A title can be missing from this database because it was published on a platform the database does not cover, which is a different thing from being unclassified.
The control. A negative result from a search box is worthless unless you show the box works. The same endpoint was queried for "grand theft auto" at 03:05:03 UTC, thirteen seconds earlier, returning HTTP 200, 280,161 bytes and real result cards including Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, The Definitive Edition. The endpoint is server-rendered, it responds to queries, and it holds Rockstar titles. Grand Theft Auto VI is in neither result set.
That is the whole finding, and it is a narrow one. PEGI's public database contains no classification record for this game as of 03:05 UTC on 8 September 2026. It is not a statement that PEGI has refused anything, that PEGI is reviewing anything, or that the game is unrated. We have no evidence for any of those and we are not implying them.
Sony says the same thing in English
The pairing that makes this worth writing is on PlayStation's own consumer site, in prose, aimed at buyers rather than at scrapers. Retrieved at 03:02:54 UTC on 8 September, HTTP 200, 361,189 bytes. Verbatim:
What age rating is Grand Theft Auto VI? Age ratings for video games vary from country to country, and at the time of writing the age ratings for Grand Theft Auto VI are unconfirmed. However, Grand Theft Auto V was rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in Europe, indicating that it is intended for adult players. Grand Theft Auto games regularly feature profanities, violence, sexual themes and depictions of illegal acts, and are generally not recommended for children.
A platform holder taking pre-orders for a game telling customers, on the product's own feature page, that its age ratings are "unconfirmed" is unusually plain-spoken. The historical ratings it cites are for the previous game, and Sony presents them as an indication rather than as a forecast.
The same page carries two other flat statements worth having on the record while we are here, verbatim: "Will Grand Theft Auto VI be playable on PlayStation®4? Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles. It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles." And, separately, "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."
The platform metadata, and one value we cannot explain
Both platform holders publish provisional ratings in their product data, which is the normal pre-release arrangement and is not in tension with PEGI's empty database. Retrieved from the Microsoft catalog record for the game at 02:58:46 UTC on 8 September, HTTP 200, 35,989 bytes, twelve rating systems are populated. Several carry no content descriptors at all, including the PEGI, CERO and USK entries. Three do carry descriptor sets: Brazil's DJCTQ, the IARC questionnaire, and Poland's PCBP.
Those descriptor codes are metadata and not content reporting. They are provisional, self-declared or derived from a questionnaire rather than from a final board ruling. Nobody should build a story about what is in this game on a three-letter code in a storefront payload, and we are not printing the codes for that reason.
The value we cannot explain is the PEGI one. The Microsoft record carries a rating identifier of PEGI:18P with an empty descriptor list. We do not know what the P suffix denotes in Microsoft's rating taxonomy. It is plausibly "provisional" and we are not going to assert that, because we have no source for it. What we can say is that a settled PEGI 18 sits awkwardly against PEGI's own database returning zero results for the same title on the same day, and that a provisional reading would resolve the tension neatly. That is a hypothesis, and it is labelled as one.
On the Xbox consumer page, retrieved at 03:05:52 UTC, HTTP 200, 474,905 bytes, the rating block reads verbatim:
RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+ May contain content inappropriate for children. Visit ESRB.org for rating information.
That string is Microsoft's storefront copy and we are quoting it as Microsoft's copy. Our researcher could not query the ESRB public database at all today. Its search endpoint ignored all four queries he submitted and returned the same ten unrelated titles at an identical byte count every time, and its search page turned out to be client-side rendered, which he proved with a control query for a title that is certainly rated and which also returned zero result links. This article therefore makes no claim, in either direction, about what the ESRB database contains. We could not check it, so we are not reporting on it.
Two other places we looked
The PlayStation Store product payload carries a content rating object whose name field is a provisional value, consistent with the pending status above, retrieved at 03:02:52 UTC, HTTP 200, 450,926 bytes. And Microsoft's catalog record also carries a MinimumUserAge of 0 and a Microsoft-internal rating value of E.
Both of those are metadata defaults and neither is a position by anybody about who should play this game. Reporting the second as "Microsoft lists Grand Theft Auto VI as suitable for all ages" would be flatly false, and it is the kind of thing that gets scraped and printed, so we are naming it in advance.
What is and is not established
CONFIRMED, retrieved at 03:05:16 UTC on 8 September 2026: the PEGI public database returns "Found 0 results from your query" for Grand Theft Auto VI, with the response measuring 221,839 bytes.
CONFIRMED, retrieved thirteen seconds earlier at 03:05:03 UTC: the same endpoint returns real result cards for Grand Theft Auto V and the Definitive Edition trilogy, which proves the search functions and holds Rockstar titles.
QUOTED IN FULL: PEGI's own boilerplate, which says a missing title may not have been classified by PEGI but may also have been published on a platform the database does not cover.
CONFIRMED: Sony's own consumer FAQ states that "at the time of writing the age ratings for Grand Theft Auto VI are unconfirmed."
UNEXPLAINED: the P suffix on the PEGI value in Microsoft's catalog record. We do not know what it means and we are not guessing in print.
COULD NOT VERIFY: anything at all at the ESRB. Its search endpoint ignored our queries and its results grid does not render without JavaScript, proven by a control query. This article makes no claim about that database in either direction.
Explicitly not claimed: that PEGI has refused, is reviewing, or has any position at all; that this game might not be rated before release; or that any of this indicates a delay. Ratings pending 72 days out is ordinary.
Explicitly not claimed: anything about the game's content on the basis of storefront descriptor codes, which are provisional metadata rather than board rulings.
We have checked the ratings boards before, in our six-board sweep and again in the recheck at 78 days out, and the position has not moved. The running ledger is on the GTA 6 wiki, the rest of today's work is on the news desk, and the servers list is open.
