Your Free GTA+ Month Expires Sooner on Xbox
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news10 min read
We read both redemption deadlines at source for the first time and ran the arithmetic. A day one Xbox pre-orderer has 99 fewer days than a PlayStation buyer with the same purchase. Here are the verbatim terms, four worked dates, and the redemption steps Microsoft actually documents.
The free month of GTA+ that came with a Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order does not expire on the same day for everyone. It expires on a fixed calendar date if you bought it on PlayStation, and on a rolling clock counted from your own purchase if you bought it on Xbox. Those two rules produce wildly different deadlines, and for the players who pre-ordered earliest they are more than three months apart.
We have mentioned these two deadlines before, but we carried them as previously published Rockstar wording rather than as our own reading. This week we read both at source, on the storefronts themselves, and did the arithmetic. This is the first time we can put the numbers next to each other and stand behind them.
The two rules, verbatim
CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 7, 2026). The PlayStation Store concept page for GTA 6 carries the sentence "Must be redeemed by March 31st 2027." The same page, in the pre-order bonus block, prints it again slightly differently: "must be redeemed by March 31, 2027. After the month, memberships auto-renew monthly at the regular monthly price until canceled. Cancel at any time. Limited to one redemption per account, regardless of additional purchases." Sony writes the date two different ways on one page, which is untidy but harmless. Both point at the same fixed day.
The same PlayStation page also carries the offer terms: "Pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI and get one month of GTA+ on PlayStation 5 at no extra cost. Subscription continues until canceled. Offer ends November 19th 2026."
We also searched that page for the string "180 day". It does not appear. There is no rolling clock on PlayStation at all.
CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 7, 2026). The Xbox Store page for GTA 6 carries something completely different: "must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order. Subscription redemption is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content. You will receive a pop-up notification on your console when your GTA+ subscription month is available to redeem. Open the Store, select your profile icon in the top left corner, and select "Offers & credits" to find and redeem this offer. Limited to one redemption per Platform Account."
This is not a mistranslation or a stray line on one locale. We checked others. The German page reads "Muss innerhalb von 180 Tagen nach der Vorbestellung eingelöst werden", and the Japanese page carries the equivalent 180 day construction. Microsoft is running a rolling deadline deliberately and consistently.
Both storefronts, for what it is worth, carry the same bonus wording: "Purchase prior to November 20 to receive: -The Vintage Vice City Pack -One Month of GTA+".
The crossover date is October 2, 2026
Here is where it gets interesting, and this arithmetic is ours. We ran it with a date library and we are stating it as our own calculation rather than quoting anybody.
Count back 180 days from March 31, 2027 and you land on October 2, 2026. That is the pivot. An Xbox player who pre-orders on exactly that day gets exactly PlayStation's deadline. Everyone who pre-ordered before it gets less time than a PlayStation player. Everyone who pre-orders after it gets more.
Four worked examples, all of them 180 days from the purchase date:
Pre-ordered June 25, 2026, the first day pre-orders opened. Xbox deadline: December 22, 2026. That is 99 days shorter than PlayStation's March 31, 2027.
Pre-ordered August 7, 2026, today. Xbox deadline: February 3, 2027. That is 56 days shorter.
Pre-ordered October 2, 2026. Xbox deadline: March 31, 2027. Identical to PlayStation.
Pre-ordered November 19, 2026, launch day itself. Xbox deadline: May 18, 2027. That is 48 days longer than PlayStation.
The consequence is genuinely backwards. On Xbox, the more enthusiastic you were, the less time you have. The people who pre-ordered on day one, the ones who wanted the game most, are the ones whose free month expires soonest. A day one Xbox pre-orderer has 99 days less than a day one PlayStation pre-orderer with an otherwise identical purchase.
Two storefronts, one bonus, two entirely different clocks running on it.
Work out your own date
If you pre-ordered on PlayStation, you do not have to do anything. Your deadline is March 31, 2027. Write it down and forget about it.
If you pre-ordered on Xbox, take your purchase date and add 180 days. That is your personal deadline and nobody else's. There is no single Xbox date, which is exactly why this catches people out: you cannot rely on seeing it in a headline, because there is no headline date to see.
Find your purchase date in your Microsoft account order history if you cannot remember it. Do not estimate. Being a fortnight out on a 180 day count is the sort of mistake that costs you the whole benefit.
How to actually redeem it on Xbox
Microsoft spells the path out in the same block of text, so we can give you the steps as documented rather than from memory. From the verbatim string above:
You will get a pop-up notification on your console when the GTA+ month becomes available to redeem. Do not dismiss it and assume you will find it later.
Open the Store.
Select your profile icon in the top left corner.
Select "Offers & credits" to find and redeem the offer.
Two restrictions are in the same string and both are worth knowing before you try. Redemption is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content, so if the pre-order sits on a child profile you will need to sort that out first. And it is limited to one redemption per Platform Account, so buying two copies does not get you two months. PlayStation carries the same limit in its own words, "Limited to one redemption per account, regardless of additional purchases."
The bit that costs money
Both storefronts say the same thing about what happens at the end of the free month, and it is the ordinary subscription trap rather than anything sharp.
PlayStation's wording is explicit: "After the month, memberships auto-renew monthly at the regular monthly price until canceled. Cancel at any time." The offer block adds "Subscription continues until canceled."
So the free month rolls into a paid one automatically. Redeem it, forget it, and you are paying for a membership you are not using. Set a reminder for the day before it ends and cancel then if you do not want it to continue. Cancelling does not shorten the month you have already been given.
We have covered the shape of what you are actually redeeming before and will not repeat it at length here. In short: GTA+ is sold as a membership for GTA Online players, and GTA 6 ships as a single player experience. Redeem the month when you actually want to play GTA Online, not on November 19 on the assumption that it does something for the new game.
Why the split exists at all
We do not know, and we are not going to invent a reason. Neither Rockstar, Sony nor Microsoft has published an explanation for why the same promotion runs on a fixed date on one platform and a rolling clock on the other. It is most likely a difference in how each storefront's promotional plumbing handles entitlements, but that is our guess and we are labelling it as one.
What we can say with confidence is that the wording is deliberate on both sides. The March 31 date appears twice on the PlayStation page. The 180 day rule appears across multiple Xbox locales in three languages. Neither is a typo.
What we confirmed and what we did not
Confirmed (our own retrieval, August 7, 2026): the PlayStation Store concept page carries "Must be redeemed by March 31st 2027." and, in the pre-order bonus block, "must be redeemed by March 31, 2027. After the month, memberships auto-renew monthly at the regular monthly price until canceled. Cancel at any time. Limited to one redemption per account, regardless of additional purchases."
Confirmed (same page, same retrieval): "Pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI and get one month of GTA+ on PlayStation 5 at no extra cost. Subscription continues until canceled. Offer ends November 19th 2026." The string "180 day" does not appear anywhere on the PlayStation page.
Confirmed (our own retrieval, August 7, 2026): the Xbox Store page carries "must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order.
Confirmed (other locales, same retrieval): the German page carries "Muss innerhalb von 180 Tagen nach der Vorbestellung eingelöst werden" and the Japanese page carries the equivalent 180 day construction, so the rolling deadline is consistent across markets.
Confirmed (both storefronts): "Purchase prior to November 20 to receive: -The Vintage Vice City Pack -One Month of GTA+".
Our own arithmetic, verified with a date library: 180 days before March 31, 2027 is October 2, 2026. A June 25, 2026 pre-order gives an Xbox deadline of December 22, 2026, 99 days shorter than PlayStation's. August 7, 2026 gives February 3, 2027, 56 days shorter. October 2, 2026 gives March 31, 2027, identical. November 19, 2026 gives May 18, 2027, 48 days longer.
New in this piece, stated plainly: we have referenced these two deadlines before as previously published Rockstar wording. This is the first time we read both at source on the storefronts themselves and computed the crossover.
Not explained by anyone: why the two platforms run different rules. Neither Rockstar, Sony nor Microsoft has published a reason, and our suggestion about storefront plumbing is a guess labelled as one.
Site baseline, referenced briefly rather than re-reported: GTA+ is sold as a membership for GTA Online players, GTA 6 ships as a single player experience, and the free month auto-renews into a paid one until cancelled.
Confirmed: GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate, and pre-orders opened June 25, 2026.
The short version, if you take nothing else away. PlayStation: March 31, 2027, same for everyone. Xbox: 180 days from your own purchase, so check your order history and count. And if you pre-ordered on Xbox back in June, your deadline is closer than you think. We will keep both storefronts under review and post any change on our news page, and our servers list is there whenever you want to spend that month somewhere.
