alt:V Multiplayer was an alternative client for GTA V community servers, developed over roughly nine years and regarded as one of the most technically respected frameworks outside FiveM. In 2026 it became the first casualty of Take-Two's consolidation of GTA multiplayer modding onto its own platform.

The shutdown, step by step

Take-Two issued its shutdown demand around February 9-11, 2026, on the platform licensing basis under which FiveM holds its authorization. Rather than fight a legal battle it was unlikely to win, the team announced a phased wind-down:

  • March 2, 2026: no new community servers could go live.
  • May 4, 2026: the public server listing went dark, cutting off discovery.
  • July 6, 2026: the platform and all community servers became fully inoperable.

The farewell

The team's goodbye was gracious. "Thank you for being part of this journey," its farewell message read, and the team acknowledged the news was tough for developers and players alike, saying that with FiveM now Rockstar's official platform for modding-based experiences, they had done their best to give server owners extra time to move.

What it previewed

alt:V's final date has already passed, which makes its shutdown the closest available preview of what August 31, 2026 looks like for RAGE:MP, the second platform wound down under the same agreement. For displaced communities, migration to FiveM means rebuilding against different APIs rather than porting, and the consolidated landscape they land in is described on the Cfx.re page.
