Every GTA 6 Xbox Record Was Rewritten in a 42-Minute Window
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news7 min read
A LastModifiedDate moves for routine reasons and we hold no baseline to diff against, so the honest sentence is that the records carry a 2 September modification stamp, not that Rockstar updated the store. The negatives are firmer. A regular expression for any GB, MB or TB figure across the entire 474,827-byte Xbox product page returns zero matches, and no install size for this game is published anywhere. The only package in the family sits on the parent record and reads MaxDownloadSizeInBytes 344731648 alongside MaxInstallSizeInBytes 0 and Version 0, which makes it a placeholder stub rather than the size of the game. We also debunk the Play Anywhere claim: the string appears nine times on the page and all nine are in the universal site navigation, while the product's real capabilities object contains only SinglePlayer and ConsoleGen9Optimized. Steam's search index still returns no GTA VI app across four query variants.
Every Grand Theft Auto VI product record in Microsoft's public catalog was rewritten on 2 September 2026. All six of them, inside a window of 42 minutes, between 18:36 and 19:18 UTC. It is the freshest platform-holder timestamp available anywhere this week, and it is also the only movement on any official surface in the last seven days.
What changed inside those records is a different question, and the honest answer is that we do not know.
The six timestamps
CONFIRMED, read from Microsoft's DisplayCatalog endpoint, all HTTP 200, fetched between 03:00:34 and 03:02:07 UTC on 3 September 2026.

The same product, 9P3H4968GRSM, was then queried across seven markets, US, GB, DE, JP, BR, AU and KR, each HTTP 200, fetched between 03:01:43 and 03:01:45 UTC. Every market returned the identical value, 2026-09-02T19:01:16.5781306Z. That rules out a per-market artefact. Whatever touched these records touched them centrally.
The hedges here are load-bearing and we are not burying them. A LastModifiedDate moves for entirely routine reasons: price table refreshes, image swaps, localisation passes, backend re-indexing. It is not evidence that anything a shopper can see has changed. We hold no stored baseline of these records from 31 August, so we cannot diff them and we cannot tell you what is different. The correct sentence is that the catalog records carry a 2 September modification stamp. The incorrect sentence is "Rockstar updated the Xbox store", and we are not writing it.
Context for why even this is worth a paragraph: Rockstar published nothing about Grand Theft Auto VI between 27 August and 3 September, and Take-Two has issued no GTA VI investor release since 24 June. On a week that quiet, a 42-minute rewrite of the whole product family is the only official-surface movement there is. That scoping comes with its own limit: the three-post list we checked is the curated news module on Rockstar's VI landing page, not the full Newswire index, which is a JavaScript shell we could not enumerate.
What did not change, which is the more useful finding
CONFIRMED as a negative finding. Both purchasable Xbox SKUs still carry a completely empty Packages array. For 9P3H4968GRSM, SKUs 0017 and 0010 both return a Packages count of 0, fetched at 03:00:58 UTC. For 9NNZSNHLR63L, SKUs 0017 and 0010 both return 0, fetched at 03:01:19 UTC. That held identically in all seven markets.
The consumer-facing page tells the same story. The Xbox store page for the standard edition was fetched at 03:07:40 UTC, HTTP 200, 474,827 bytes. A regular expression matching any number followed by GB, MB or TB across the entire document returned zero matches. The keys approximateSizeInBytes, maxInstallSizeInBytes, maxDownloadSizeInBytes and packageSize returned zero matches each.
No install size for Grand Theft Auto VI is published anywhere. Any "GTA 6 install size revealed" story circulating right now is not coming from Microsoft's catalog, because the field is empty. Seventy-seven days out, no real build has been staged in the public storefront record.
There is one package in the whole family, and it is on the parent record. 9NL3WWNZLZZN carries one package per SKU across 0017, 0010 and 0011, each reading PackageFormat XVC and MaxDownloadSizeInBytes 344731648, and that figure is NOT the size of the game, because the same package reads MaxInstallSizeInBytes 0 and Version 0, which marks it as a placeholder stub rather than a shipping build. We corrected this once before and we are repeating the disqualifier in the same breath as the number on purpose. A screenshot of that figure with the two zeroes cropped out is exactly how a "GTA 6 is only 344MB" hoax starts, and this desk would rather be repetitive than be the source of one. Our longer piece on the missing install size covers the storefront record in more detail.
Grand Theft Auto VI is not marked Xbox Play Anywhere
A naive scrape of that Xbox product page finds the string "XBOX Play Anywhere" nine times, and a nine-hit count looks like a signal. It is not one. Every single occurrence is in the universal Xbox site navigation.
CONFIRMED by context extraction at 03:08:13 UTC. All nine sit inside elements carrying class="uhf-nav-item uhf-dropdown-link", each pointing at Microsoft's general Play Anywhere landing page with the query parameter xr=shellnav, and each tagged with the analytics key "cN": "CatNav_Games_XBOX Play Anywhere_nav". That is the header menu that appears on every page of xbox.com. It has nothing to do with this product.
The product's actual capabilities object contains exactly two entries, verbatim:
"capabilities":{"SinglePlayer":"Single player","ConsoleGen9Optimized":"Optimized for Xbox Series X|S"}
with "availableOn":["XboxSeriesX"]. No Play Anywhere capability. No PC entitlement.
And Steam still returns nothing. Steam's store search API was queried at 02:59:14 UTC and again with variants at 02:59:23 UTC. The complete response for "grand theft auto vi" is one item, and it is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, The Definitive Edition. "grand theft auto 6" returns a total of 0. "gta vi" returns a total of 0. No Grand Theft Auto VI app ID exists in Steam's search index.
If a "Play Anywhere means GTA 6 is coming to PC" claim circulates this week, that is a scraping error against site navigation, and now you can say exactly why. Our standing explainer on the PC question sets out the rest.
Two hedges on the negative. Steam's search index omits unreleased and unannounced apps as a matter of course, so absence there is strong evidence that no public listing exists today and weak evidence about Rockstar's plans. And Rockstar has historically shipped PC versions later. An absent listing 77 days out is unremarkable, and nobody should read it as news of a cancellation.
What is and is not established
CONFIRMED: all six Grand Theft Auto VI records in Microsoft's catalog carry a LastModifiedDate of 2 September 2026, between 18:36:16Z and 19:18:28Z, a window of 42 minutes.
CONFIRMED: the value for 9P3H4968GRSM was identical across all seven markets queried, which rules out a per-market artefact.
Explicitly not claimed: that anything visible changed. A LastModifiedDate moves for routine backend reasons, we hold no baseline to diff against, and we cannot say what is different inside those records.
CONFIRMED as a negative finding: both purchasable SKUs carry empty Packages arrays in all seven markets, and a size-string regex across the entire 474,827-byte consumer page returns zero matches. No install size is published anywhere.
CONFIRMED, with its disqualifier attached: the parent record's single package reads MaxDownloadSizeInBytes 344731648 alongside MaxInstallSizeInBytes 0 and Version 0, which makes it a placeholder stub and not the size of the game.
CONFIRMED as a negative finding: Grand Theft Auto VI is not marked Xbox Play Anywhere. All nine occurrences of that string are in the universal site navigation, and the product's capabilities object contains only SinglePlayer and ConsoleGen9Optimized.
CONFIRMED as a negative finding: Steam's search index returns no Grand Theft Auto VI app across four query variants.
Method limits printed as limits: we sampled seven markets rather than all of them, we hold no stored 31 August catalog baseline, the Rockstar Newswire index is a JavaScript shell we could not enumerate so the seven-day silence is scoped to the VI landing page module, and Rockstar Support returned connection errors on both attempts.
Our running record of what the storefronts actually say, as against what is being read into them, is on the wiki, with the rest of today's work on the news desk. The servers list and the leaderboards are open for the next 77 days.
