We Said GTA 6 Unlocks at Local Midnight. For Millions It Does Not

by 6Charts Team Category: news 10 min read

The timestamp Microsoft publishes is attached to a Store region, not to a clock, and a territory spanning five time zones has five midnights while the catalog carries one instant. Our own earlier copy treated the two as the same thing. On GTA BOOM's figures, which got this right where we did not, the rollout lands at 11pm Central, 10pm Mountain, 9pm Pacific, 8pm Alaska and 7pm Hawaii on 18 November, and at 9pm in Perth against midnight in Sydney. We re-pulled Microsoft's catalog across twenty markets, six more than our August piece covered, and the data has not moved since 2 September: the values run from New Zealand at 2026-11-18T11:00:00Z to Mexico at 2026-11-19T06:00:00Z. Four PlayStation Store locale strings match in every overlapping region, and GTA BOOM's independent 63-country table gives the same first and last windows. Three hour-count figures are circulating and we say what each one measures.

On 21 August this desk published a piece headlined "GTA 6 Unlocks at Midnight Local Time in 14 Markets Checked". Its opening claim was, in our own words, that "GTA 6 unlocks at 00:00 local time on 19 November 2026" and that "All 14 markets we pulled from Microsoft's public catalog resolve to local midnight". Two weeks earlier we had published the same thing under the headline "What Time GTA 6 Unlocks Where You Live", which said the game "unlocks at local midnight on November 19 in every market we checked". That is wrong for anyone living in a country with more than one time zone, and it is wrong by hours. If you are on the United States west coast, Grand Theft Auto VI unlocks for you at 9pm on 18 November, not at midnight on the 19th. We have re-pulled Microsoft's catalog across twenty markets this morning and the data has not changed. Our reading of it was the problem. Here is the correction, what the numbers actually say, and the arithmetic that resolves three competing figures now circulating. What we got wrong, precisely The timestamp Microsoft publishes is attached to a Store region, not to a clock. One value covers the whole of the United States. One value covers the whole of Australia. Our two earlier pieces treated those single values as though they resolved to midnight everywhere inside the territory they cover, which they cannot, because a territory spanning five time zones has five midnights and the catalog carries one instant. Read against a territory's reference zone, the pattern holds: the United States value of 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z is midnight in New York. Read against the territory as a whole, it is the evening of 18 November for everyone west of there. This article is the correction for both of the earlier pieces. Our 7 August piece on unlock times by region and our 21 August fourteen-market check both need the qualification, and the second one needs it in its headline. Neither has been edited, so both still read as first published, and a reader who arrives at one of them without seeing this page will still be misled. We are stating that here rather than quietly leaving it out. GTA BOOM, which published the fullest PlayStation table on 7 September, got this right where we did not. Verbatim: Most open at local midnight on [launch day], but a nationwide Store timestamp produces an earlier evening start in the western parts of countries with several time zones. Its worked examples, also verbatim: "US/Canada: Central 11 p.m., Mountain 10 p.m., Pacific 9 p.m., Alaska 8 p.m., Hawaii 7 p.m."; "Australia stretches from midnight in Sydney to 9 p.m. in Perth"; "Mexico: Cancun 1 a.m.; Sonora 11 p.m.; Baja California 10 p.m. on November 18". Shane the Gamer reduces it to one line: "The United States is an exception to a strict local-midnight rollout." So the honest formulation, and the one we should have used in August, is this: the game unlocks at a single published instant per Store region, which lands at local midnight only if you happen to live in that region's reference time zone. The twenty-market dataset, which is six markets more than we had CONFIRMED, read from Microsoft's DisplayCatalog v7.0 endpoint, product 9P3H4968GRSM, all HTTP 200, fetched between 02:59:30 UTC and 03:13:52 UTC on 11 September 2026, payloads between 35,983 and 36,644 bytes each. The field is MarketProperties[0].OriginalReleaseDate. Our August piece covered fourteen markets. These are twenty. The same caution is why the table above gives UTC and nothing else. 18 hours, 19 hours or roughly 20 hours? All three are in circulation This is the second thing we can usefully add, because three figures are being printed and they measure three different things. 18 hours is New Zealand to the United States. 2026-11-18T11:00:00Z to 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z. That subtraction is ours. At least 19 hours is New Zealand to the last window in our sample, Mexico. 2026-11-18T11:00:00Z to 2026-11-19T06:00:00Z. Also our subtraction, and it matches GTA BOOM's own 19-hour figure exactly. Roughly 20 hours is IGN's figure. Published 2026-09-07 at 18:00:31 UTC, by news editor Tom Phillips, verbatim: "the midnight local rollout means players in New Zealand will get a roughly 20-hour headstart on Mexico and elsewhere in Central America." Vice prints two of them in one article: its headline says New Zealand gets it 18 hours early while its body says the rollout runs "over the following 19 hours." Shane the Gamer handles it properly and states both, verbatim: "That puts the US PlayStation unlock 18 hours behind New Zealand. The wider sequence runs across roughly 19 hours from the first regional window to the last." The limit on our own number. "At least 19 hours" is arithmetic on the two extreme values in the twenty markets we queried. Territories we did not query could fall outside that span in either direction. Nobody should write "19 hours worldwide", and note that IGN's "midnight local rollout" phrasing carries the same flaw our own headline did. Two independent datasets agree, and a third outlet built the same shape CONFIRMED, from the PlayStation Store product page for EP1004-PPSA01547_00-GTAVISTANDARD001, read out of the raw HTML rather than through a rendering proxy. The relevant module prints the unlock instant in UTC on the page itself. Verbatim, by locale: en-us, fetched 03:04:45 UTC, 451,414 bytes: Grand Theft Auto VI Rockstar Games 11/19/2026 05:00 AM UTC PS5 Standard Edition PS5 Pro Enhanced en-gb, fetched 03:05:59 UTC, 458,432 bytes: Grand Theft Auto VI Rockstar Games 19/11/2026 12:00 AM UTC PS5 Standard Edition PS5 Pro Enhanced de-de, fetched 03:06:00 UTC, 466,080 bytes: Grand Theft Auto VI Rockstar Games 18.11.2026 11:00 PM UTC PS5 Standard Edition Für PS5 Pro optimiert pt-br, fetched 03:06:04 UTC, 449,923 bytes: Grand Theft Auto VI Rockstar Games 19/11/2026 03:00 AM UTC PS5 Standard Edition PS5 Pro Aprimorado United States 05:00Z, United Kingdom 00:00Z, Germany 18 November 23:00Z, Brazil 03:00Z. Four for four against the Microsoft values. Two platform holders, two entirely separate systems, the same instants. And the shape is independently corroborated in the press. GTA BOOM's table, published 2026-09-07 at 22:18:42 UTC and carrying later revision stamps up to 2026-09-09 at 19:36:42 UTC (fetched 03:29:06 UTC, HTTP 200, 737,470 bytes), opens verbatim: copies "begin unlocking in New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on November 18 and finish their current regional rollout 19 hours later in Mexico and Central America. This is not one simultaneous worldwide launch." It says "The 63 timed countries and regions resolve into 15 windows." IGN got there the same day, Vice a couple of hours later, Shane the Gamer and Gfinity the following morning. No published table contradicts any of this, and we are not going to pretend that is a weakness. Two platform holders and four outlets independently landing on the same sequence is the strongest thing about the underlying data. The disagreement is not about the numbers. It is about what "local midnight" means, and on that our own earlier copy was on the wrong side. An official Rockstar press screenshot. Nothing on this page comes from a pre-release build, a pre-load, or any unauthorised source. Three things this piece is deliberately not about Each of these has its own article on this desk, and repeating them here would only dilute the correction above. Pre-loading. It opens on 12 November, which has been public since 24 June 2026 and which we covered in detail in our reading of Rockstar's own store records. Nothing in today's data changes it. One detail rather than a discovery, for anyone checking the Xbox listing themselves: that listing contains the string "Pre-load" zero times, and Microsoft's catalog carries a null PreorderDate on every availability of all six product identifiers, while ScreenRant reported on 9 July that the 12 November schedule covers Xbox Series X and S as well. Those two things can both be true. It is a gap in storefront copy, not a gap in the entitlement. The download size. Nobody has published one, and the only figure any storefront exposes is a placeholder package that is not the size of this game, which we set out with its disqualifiers in our piece on the missing install size. Three outlets in this window say the same thing: GTA BOOM, "The final download size is still unannounced"; IGN, "Rockstar is yet to say how much free space you'll need"; Shane the Gamer, "Rockstar has not yet disclosed how much storage space will be required." When pre-ordering closes. Microsoft's catalog Conditions blocks put the United States window at 2026-06-25T04:00:00Z to 2026-11-19T04:59:59Z, the United Kingdom at 2026-06-24T23:00:00Z to 2026-11-18T23:59:59Z and Australia at 2026-06-24T14:00:00Z to 2026-11-18T12:59:59Z. Note that those are local-midnight aligned in exactly the same way as the unlock instants, which means they carry exactly the same caveat. One thing that has not moved since before this window opened CONFIRMED, and re-confirmed on the same morning. The Microsoft catalog entry for Grand Theft Auto VI carries a LastModifiedDate of 2026-09-02T19:01:16.5781306Z, identical to the digit across all twenty markets, with a RevisionId of 2026-09-02T19:01:20.0625556Z. Seven of those markets were re-fetched at 03:28:48 to 03:28:51 UTC and returned the same values. So the dataset above has been sitting untouched since 2 September, one day before this reporting window opened. A metadata edit nine weeks before launch is unremarkable on its own and it is not evidence of trouble. It does mean the table is stable rather than freshly written, and that our August figures and today's figures come from the same underlying record, which is why this is a correction to our reading and not a report of a change. LastModifiedDate covers catalog metadata only: it says nothing about the game build, nothing about Sony's store and nothing about Rockstar's own site. What is and is not established OUR OWN CORRECTION: our 7 August and 21 August pieces said Grand Theft Auto VI unlocks at local midnight, and the second said so in its headline. That is accurate only for players in a Store region's reference time zone. In a multi-timezone country it is wrong, by up to five hours on GTA BOOM's United States figures. CONFIRMED: the timestamp is published per Store region, not per clock. On GTA BOOM's figures that is 11pm Central, 10pm Mountain, 9pm Pacific, 8pm Alaska and 7pm Hawaii on 18 November, and 9pm in Perth against midnight in Sydney. CONFIRMED, across twenty markets rather than our earlier fourteen: the per-market OriginalReleaseDate values run from New Zealand at 2026-11-18T11:00:00Z to Mexico at 2026-11-19T06:00:00Z. OUR OWN ARITHMETIC, labelled as ours: 18 hours is New Zealand to the United States and at least 19 hours is New Zealand to Mexico, computed on the two extreme values in the twenty markets we queried. Not "19 hours worldwide". Printed rather than resolved: IGN says roughly 20 hours, GTA BOOM and Vice say 19, and Vice's own headline says 18. All three are in circulation and we have said what each measures. CONFIRMED: PlayStation Store pages in four locales publish the same instants for the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Brazil, and GTA BOOM's 63-country, 15-window PlayStation table gives the same first and last windows. IGN, Vice, Shane the Gamer and Gfinity agree. No published table contradicts the dataset. Explicitly not claimed: that any of these times is a Rockstar announcement. They are storefront availability timestamps, they can move, and GTA BOOM's own posture is the right one: "Times may change before launch." Explicitly not re-reported here: the 12 November pre-load date, the Rockstar store commerce records behind it and the missing download size, all of which this desk has already covered and each of which is linked above rather than restated. Method limits printed as limits: the Rockstar Newswire is a JavaScript shell with no RSS and no discoverable API, so we cannot tell you whether Rockstar published anything there in this window; support.rockstargames.com was unreachable to two of our researchers, failing with curl exit 92 and then curl exit 52 and returning 503 through a second client, with no Wayback snapshot; the PlayStation store pages for Japan and Australia returned an empty-module error under the product identifier we tested, so no Japanese or Australian PlayStation unlock time is verified here; and Epic's storefront returned 403 bot challenges, which is a block and not evidence either way. Our running ledger of what is established about this game, as against what is circulating and what we have had to correct, is on the wiki, with the rest of today's reporting on the news desk. The servers list and the leaderboards are open for the next 69 days.
