GTA 6 PS5 Codes Are Region Locked: Full Country List
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news6 min read
GTA 6 boxed download codes are region-locked on PS5 across nine country groupings and region-free on Xbox, per Rockstar's own support page. Here is the complete country list, the United Kingdom quirk, and why the July 27 coverage describes a page dated June 24, 2026.
Buy a boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 for PlayStation 5 in the wrong country and the code inside may not redeem on your account. Buy the Xbox box anywhere and it will. Rockstar's own support page sets out the rules, splits PlayStation buyers into nine regional groupings, and leaves the most obvious question unanswered.
The caveat that belongs at the top
A wave of "Rockstar confirms" headlines ran on July 27, 2026. The support article they are all quoting carries a "Last Updated" stamp of June 24, 2026, the same day the store listings went live.
So what happened on July 27 is that outlets read a month-old page carefully. Rockstar made no announcement that day.
We went looking for proof either way and there is none available. The Internet Archive holds no snapshot of this support URL at any date, so there is no way to diff what the page said in June against what it says now. That cuts both ways: nobody can show the region list was quietly added later, and nobody can show it was there from the start. The June 24 stamp is what the page itself reports, and that is as far as the evidence goes.
What Rockstar's support page states
The primary source is Rockstar Games Support, "Grand Theft Auto VI: Platform, Editions and Versions", at https://support.rockstargames.com/articles/4QfG4FmZCf5W1gS8jy4UVT/grand-theft-auto-vi-platform-editions-and-versions. The relevant wording, verbatim:
"The digital download code for Grand Theft Auto VI works differently depending on the platform and country of purchase."
"Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account."
"If you purchase either version of Grand Theft Auto VI in a region different from your platform account, that version must match the region of your platform account."
"Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked."
"Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations."
Rockstar also recommends buying from a retailer in the country of your platform account to avoid activation problems, confirms that physical versions are available for shipping and pickup from November 12, 2026, that preloading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026, and that the boxed edition contains a download code and no disc.
That last point is what gives all of this teeth. There is no fallback. If the code does not redeem, the box contains nothing playable.
The nine PlayStation region groupings
A PS5 code must match the region of the PlayStation account redeeming it. These are the groupings as listed by Rockstar, using Rockstar's own headings. Note that Insider Gaming's write-up counts ten groupings, because it folds the Xbox note in as a tenth. There are nine.
1. Brazil
2. LATAM: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
3. North America: Canada, United States
4. Korea
5. Japan
6. United Kingdom
7. Saudi Arabia & UAE
8. Rest of Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
9. Rest of EMEA and Asia: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine
The United Kingdom is on its own
The grouping worth pointing out is number six. The United Kingdom sits in a region of its own, separate from Ireland, France, Germany and the rest of Europe, all of which sit together in grouping nine.
The practical consequence for a UK buyer is that the cheap boxed copy from a European retailer is not a straightforward purchase. A code bought in Ireland or Germany does not sit in the same grouping as a UK PlayStation account. That cuts the other way too: a French or German buyer cannot casually import from a UK retailer. Australia and New Zealand, meanwhile, sit in the same grouping as most of Europe, which is a grouping that spans a great deal of the planet.
Codes do not expire, except in Japan
The expiry rule is the part of this story that has been handled worst, so here is the position from the primary source. Rockstar's support page names an expiry for Japan only. It states no expiry for any other region. On that basis, a code bought outside Japan has no published expiry, and the Japanese rule should not be generalised.
Coverage got tangled here. GTA BOOM ran a piece on July 24, 2026 headlined that GTA 6 download codes do not expire, treating the Japan claim as a misreading. Rockstar's support page had carried the Japan expiry line since June 24, a month before that piece ran. GTA BOOM then published again on July 27 discussing the 170-day expiry and dating it to around May 8, 2027.
We are pointing at the support page rather than at any outlet. It says Japan expires and says nothing about expiry anywhere else.
Who reported it and when
Insider Gaming (Sam Sepiol, July 27, 2026) appears to have surfaced the region list first. The same day it was covered by PlayStation LifeStyle (Zarmena Khan), TheSixthAxis (Tuffcub), GTA BOOM (Ray Ampoloquio), Notebookcheck, Wccftech and Chris Klippel's Rockstar Mag' in France.
Push Square (Sammy Barker) had run a related piece three days earlier, on July 24, 2026, noting that importers would need to create an associated PSN account for the region they buy from. That is the workaround, and it comes with the usual consequences: a second account, a separate library, and separate save data.
The question nobody has answered
Why is PlayStation treated differently from Xbox? Rockstar has given no reason. Neither Sony nor Microsoft has commented.
The line repeated across several write-ups, that the split "stems from platform policies rather than Rockstar's choice", is unattributed inference. It sounds reasonable. It also has no named source behind it, and we are not going to pass it along as though it does.
Confirmed, reported and unconfirmed
Confirmed (Rockstar Games Support, "Platform, Editions and Versions"): PS5 download codes must match the region of the PlayStation account redeeming them, across the nine groupings listed above. Xbox codes "are not region-locked." Product codes in Japan expire 170 days after the November 19, 2026 issuance date. Physical versions are available for shipping and pickup from November 12, 2026, preloading begins at local midnight on November 12, and the box contains a code and no disc.
Confirmed (same page): Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the country of your platform account to avoid activation problems.
Confirmed (same page, by omission): No expiry is stated for any region other than Japan, so codes bought elsewhere have no published expiry.
Outlet contradiction, noted: GTA BOOM published on July 24, 2026 that GTA 6 codes do not expire, a month after Rockstar's page began carrying the Japan expiry line, then published again on July 27 discussing that expiry and dating it to around May 8, 2027.
Reported (Push Square, Sammy Barker, July 24, 2026): Importers would need to create an associated PSN account for the region they buy from.
Documentation caveat: The support article carries a "Last Updated" stamp of June 24, 2026, the day the store listings went live, so the July 27 coverage reflects renewed attention and not a new announcement. The Internet Archive holds no snapshot of this URL at any date, so there is no evidence available showing whether the region list was present in June or added afterwards.
Not confirmed: Why PlayStation and Xbox are treated differently. Rockstar has said nothing and neither platform holder has commented, so the widely repeated "platform policies rather than Rockstar's choice" line is unattributed inference. Also unconfirmed: whether digital storefront preorders are affected, since the page addresses retail download codes; whether a mismatched code hard fails or merely warns; and whether the region list as published is final.
If you are buying the box, buy it in the country your PlayStation account belongs to, and check grouping nine before assuming Europe is one market. We will update this page if Rockstar's support wording changes. Keep up with the countdown to November 19 on our news hub, and start scouting communities to join on our servers list.
