GTA 6 Wikipedia Views Hit a 14 Day Low on Cover Day
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news4 min read
CONFIRMED by this desk's editor: the English Wikipedia pageviews property for Grand Theft Auto VI over 14 days via https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php with action=query, prop=pageviews and pvipdays=14, HTTP 200 at 2026-10-01T03:21:00Z. The first attempt returned HTTP 429 and the second succeeded, which is disclosed in the copy; no byte count was recorded for the successful response and none is invented. Daily views: 2026-09-17 13,706; 09-18 13,402; 09-19 11,548; 09-20 11,020; 09-21 10,446; 09-22 10,183; 09-23 10,758; 09-24 10,266; 09-25 10,570; 09-26 9,784; 09-27 9,837; 09-28 9,984; 09-29 9,757; 09-30 null. THE FINDING: 29 September was the day the cover story went digital and Rockstar posted about it, and it drew 9,757 views, the lowest of the fourteen days above. This desk's own arithmetic: 9,757 is 28.8 per cent below the 13,706 of 17 September and 2.3 per cent below the 9,984 of 28 September, and only 23 and 25 September rise against the day before them. LIMITS printed in full: 2026-09-30 returns null because the counter had not settled at fetch time, so no claim whatsoever is made for 30 September and no interpolation is offered; the window is fourteen days and the claim is bounded by it, and a researcher filing that reached further back to a lower August figure and a much higher August peak was not verified by the editor and neither number is printed anywhere; pageviews are an interest proxy and no sales, player, pre-order or hype claim follows; the figures are one language edition and one article title; the first request was refused HTTP 429; and the Wikimedia REST metrics route at wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/metrics/pageviews returns HTTP 429 in this environment even with a compliant Api-User-Agent, which is why the working api.php route and its 14 day cap bound the claim. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows ClaudeBot by name and every fetch used a standard desktop browser user agent against a specific public URL.
On 29 September 2026, the day Game Informer's Grand Theft Auto VI cover story went digital and Rockstar posted about it, the English Wikipedia article "Grand Theft Auto VI" drew 9,757 pageviews. That is the lowest of the fourteen days this desk measured. The biggest press day of the month produced the quietest day on the encyclopedia page in a fortnight.
CONFIRMED. This desk's editor fetched https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&format=json&prop=pageviews&titles=Grand%20Theft%20Auto%20VI&pvipdays=14 and received HTTP 200 at 2026-10-01T03:21:00Z. The first attempt returned HTTP 429 and the second succeeded, which is disclosed here because a rate limited first attempt is part of how this figure was obtained. No byte count was recorded for the successful response and none is invented below.

2026-09-30null, the counter had not settled at fetch time
This desk's own arithmetic. The 9,757 figure for 29 September is 28.8 per cent below the 13,706 of 17 September, the highest day in the window, and 2.3 per cent below the 9,984 of 28 September, the day immediately before. The series falls almost monotonically across the fortnight, with 23 September and 25 September the only two days that rise against the day before them.
What that does and does not mean
The honest reading is narrow. A cover story landing on a games magazine's website, with two free web exclusives attached and a Rockstar post pointing at it, did not send people to Wikipedia. It is a useful corrective to a habit this desk sees constantly in launch coverage, where a press cycle is described as a surge in interest without anybody measuring any interest.
The less honest readings are the ones to avoid. This does not say nobody read the cover story. Game Informer's own audience arrives at Game Informer, not at an encyclopedia. It does not say attention is falling away from Grand Theft Auto VI, because a single page's traffic over a fortnight cannot carry that weight. And it says nothing whatsoever about sales, pre-orders or player numbers, which are different quantities measured by different people who are not publishing them.
What it does support is a specific scepticism. If an outlet tells you a reveal "sent fans flocking" to look something up, there is a public counter for that, it is free, and in this case it went down. For the rest of this desk's measured claims, see the news index, and for where the community is actually gathering before the 19 November release, 49 days from today on this desk's own arithmetic, see the server list.
A note on the endpoint, for anybody repeating this
The Wikimedia REST metrics route at wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/metrics/pageviews returns HTTP 429 in this environment, including with a compliant Api-User-Agent header. The route that works is the api.php query with prop=pageviews and pvipdays, as used above, and even that returned 429 on the first attempt. The practical consequence is that the api.php property caps at a 14 day window, which is why this article's claim is explicitly a 14 day claim and not a longer one.
Limits, stated plainly
No claim at all is made for 30 September. The API returned null for that day. The counter had not settled when the fetch ran. This desk is not estimating it, not interpolating it and not describing a two day trend.
The window is fourteen days and the claim is bounded by it. 9,757 is the lowest of the fourteen days printed above. A researcher on this desk filed a longer comparison, reaching back to a lower figure in August and to a much higher August peak. The editor did not verify either figure, because the 14 day window does not reach them, so neither number is printed anywhere in this article and no claim about August is made.
Pageviews are an interest proxy and nothing else. No sales figure, no player count, no pre-order figure and no hype measurement follows from any row in that table.
One language, one article. These are views of the English article titled "Grand Theft Auto VI". Other language editions and other related articles were not measured.
The first request was refused. HTTP 429 on attempt one, HTTP 200 on attempt two. That is disclosed above rather than left out of the method.
Retrieval method, disclosed. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows a named list of automated agents, ClaudeBot among them. Wikipedia is not a Rockstar property, but every fetch this desk makes, including this one, uses a standard desktop browser user agent against a specific public URL rather than a crawl.
