GTA 6 is the first mainline Grand Theft Auto to use a formal chapter-based story structure — a fact Rockstar confirmed not through a feature reveal but through commerce copy. The official Ultimate Edition description, live alongside pre-orders from around 24 June 2026, states that the edition's content is "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story" with new items "uncovered behind each chapter". That phrase — "each chapter" — is the confirmation: the campaign is divided into discrete chapters rather than presented as one continuous mission tree. GamesRadar, Dexerto and TweakTown all flagged the language as the clearest structural signal yet.

No previous mainline GTA used this format; earlier entries handed players a branching mission tree. Rockstar built and refined the chapter structure in Red Dead Redemption 2, where chapters evolved the world and gated regions as the story progressed, and the natural read — reported analysis, not an official statement — is that the same framework is coming to Vice City.

What is not confirmed

The chapter count. Rockstar has published no number, no chapter list and no detail on how long each chapter runs. Leak-era reporting via GameRant described a story structured across roughly five chapters, but that figure comes from the same unconfirmed body of leaks as the interior counts and weight systems — treat it as a leak, not a fact. See the 2022 leak for context on that material.

A chapter structure signals a more deliberately authored campaign for Jason and Lucia — potentially progression-gated regions, clearer act breaks and tighter control of tone and difficulty — though how chapters interact with the open world remains unshown, and more concrete detail will likely arrive closer to launch.
