The GTA 6 Screenshots That Were New Twice, and Our Correction
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news9 min read
The origin article is unambiguous: "These screenshots were previously published and scattered across various publications." Six days later a YouTube title read "29 NEW GTA 6 Screenshots + 3 We've NEVER Seen Before". The count drifted from 20+ to 29 to 30 to dozens to 70 to 29 plus 3, and the hedge shrank from "previously published" to "one or two out in the wild" to nothing. Our own crawl now establishes that the gallery served 2,137,242 bytes and 182 distinct asset base names on 3 September, identical to the figures recorded on 31 August, with all three live official bundles cold and a newest Last-Modified of 27 August 2026, so nothing has been added since. We carry the manifest of 99 distinct screenshot asset slugs across 15 named sets, and the honest limit that /VI/media is a JavaScript shell and /VI/screens returns 404, so every count in the press chain is somebody else's count. No YouTube view count appears anywhere, because every watch page returned an abuse-detection redirect today.
On 31 August this desk published a piece headlined around 28 new official screenshots being added quietly to Rockstar's website. We have re-checked that gallery today and we owe our readers two corrections, one about the word "new" and one about what has happened since.
Here is the short version. Images were added to rockstargames.com around the end of August. That part is real and checkable. Whether they were new images is not established, and the outlet that ran the story first said in plain words that they were not. And nothing at all has been added since 31 August, which we can now demonstrate rather than assume.
The outlet that broke it said the images were re-releases
HOP 1, and it is the origin. RockstarINTEL, byline Aaron Trueman, published 2026-08-27 at 20:17:11 UTC and last modified 2026-09-01 at 09:01:16 UTC. Fetched by our researcher at 03:05:24 UTC on 3 September, HTTP 200, after a first attempt returned HTTP 429. The headline reads "20+ New GTA 6 Screenshots Released". The body reads, verbatim:
These screenshots were previously published and scattered across various publications. Now Rockstar have provided everyone will fully uncompressed 4K versions of them.
The typo in "provided everyone will fully uncompressed" is in the original and we have quoted it as filed. The substance is unambiguous: previously published, now reissued uncompressed in 4K. That is a real story. It is a much smaller one than the headline above it, and three separate counts appear inside that single article, "20+" in the headline, "over 20" in the first line, and "all of the 29 screenshots" further down.
How the count and the novelty drifted
Published (UTC)WhoCountWhat happened to the hedge
2026-08-27 20:17:11RockstarINTEL, Aaron Trueman20+, then over 20, then 29Stated outright. "These screenshots were previously published."
2026-08-31 22:15:00Push Square, Sammy Barker30Weakened but alive. The framing "Rockstar has added more GTA 6 screenshots to its official website" is accurate. The hedge has become "it's possible you may have seen these floating around on social media".
2026-09-01 11:08:00Pure Xbox, Craig Reid30Shrunk to "one or two". The batch is described as "freshly baked" and the images as "new stills", against an origin article that said the whole set had been published before.
2026-09-01Shane the Gamer, Marcus Valemore than 20 additional, 70 totalMost accurate headline of the set. "Rockstar Adds Dozens More Screenshots to Site" is exactly what happened.
roughly 2026-09-02 17:00MrBossFTW, YouTube29 new, plus 3Gone, and inverted. Title reads "Rockstar Games Just Released 29 NEW GTA 6 Screenshots + 3 We've NEVER Seen Before!"
"Just Released" is wrong twice over. The images went up on Rockstar's site somewhere between 27 and 31 August, and the origin article says they had circulated before that. "3 We've NEVER Seen Before" is an unsupported subdivision of a count that nobody in the chain agrees on. The publication time for that video is a relative string, "10 hours ago", read from a YouTube search results page at 03:03:53 UTC on 3 September, which is why we have written it as approximate.
We are printing no view count for that video or any other. Our primary-source researcher could not verify a single YouTube view count today: every watch page he requested returned HTTP 302 to Google's abuse-detection interstitial, twice, including with a full desktop user agent and consent cookies. Where we cannot measure something, we say so rather than borrowing a number.
Push Square, to its credit, also carried the one piece of context that matters for judging these images, verbatim: "Rockstar said the Extended Look was captured entirely on base PS5, so while I imagine many of these images are touched-up, it's broadly what you can expect from the final release." A separate URL for the same Push Square story also resolves, with "will blow you away" rather than "to blow you away" in the slug, serving identical content and metadata, which looks like a headline edit with both slugs left live.
Our own correction
We published gta-6-28-new-official-screenshots-added-quietly-august-31 on 31 August, and the number in that headline was 28 new. The addition to the site is supported and we stand behind it. The word "new" is not supported in the sense most readers will have taken it, because the only outlet in the chain that addressed the question directly said the images had been published before and that what was genuinely new was the uncompressed 4K versions. We should have carried that, and we did not.
We are also not going to fix one number by inventing another. We hold no verified pre-31-August baseline for the gallery's contents, so we cannot do the subtraction, and any sentence of the form "there were X before and there are Y now" is arithmetic nobody on this desk can evidence. We are not printing one.
Every image on this page is an official Rockstar press screenshot from the gallery under discussion. The set slugs double as a roster of named locations, and this one belongs to leonida_keys.
What our own crawl establishes today
CONFIRMED, by four independent lines that agree. The Rockstar screenshots gallery at /VI/media/screenshots was fetched at 03:02:53 UTC on 3 September 2026, HTTP 200, and served 2,137,242 bytes. That is identical, to the byte, to the figure recorded on this desk at the end of the 31 August crawl, when the page had grown from 1,832,980 bytes across that day as the drop landed. A CMS addition to this page cannot happen without moving that number, because every tile contributes a hashed source-set block to the served HTML.
Second line: the same page parsed to 182 distinct asset base names today, exactly the 182 recorded on 31 August.
Third line: the official Akamai bundles are cold. Checked by HEAD request at 03:03:49 to 03:03:51 UTC, GTAVI_Screenshots.zip is 72,255,931 bytes with a Last-Modified of Thu, 27 Aug 2026 17:08:54 GMT. GTAVI_Ultimate_Edition_Benefits.zip and GTAVI_Vintage_Vice_City_Pack.zip both read 24 June 2026. GTAVI_Artwork.zip still returns HTTP 404 and does not exist. The newest Last-Modified across the three live bundles is 27 August 2026.
Fourth line: a normalised diff of 245 remote image names collected across five reachable pages produced no residual that is not already a settled category on this desk, being alternate aspect-ratio crops, storefront furniture and site chrome.
Nothing has been added to Rockstar's official gallery since 31 August 2026. Anything published this week describing a fresh drop is describing the same set.
The manifest, and what the numbers actually count
Two different counts of the same page appear in our own reporting and they measure different things, so we are printing both and explaining the difference rather than picking one.
99 is the number of unique slugs matching the pattern vi_downloads_screenshots_ in the page payload, extracted by our primary-source researcher from the same 2,137,242-byte fetch. 182 is the number of distinct asset base names of every kind on that page, which includes video posters, wallpapers, cover art, download variants and site furniture as well as screenshots. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions.
The 99 break down across 15 named sets: jason_and_lucia 13, vice_city 12, lucia_caminos 10, jason_duval 10, and then six apiece for port_gellhorn, mount_kalaga, leonida_keys, grassrivers and ambrosia, and four apiece for real_dimez, raul_bautista, drequan_priest, cal_hampton, brian_heder and boobie_ike.
Hedges on that manifest, all mandatory. 99 is a count of distinct screenshot asset slugs in the page source. The rendered gallery could group or omit some, so the correct sentence is "99 screenshot assets" and not "Rockstar has published exactly 99 screenshots". These slugs are internal filenames, and treating a filename as a confirmed character name is a stretch: boobie_ike and real_dimez are asset names first and anything else second. The related route /VI/downloads now returns HTTP 308 and redirects to /VI/media, so the downloads path is an alias rather than a separate index. We have enumerated Rockstar's own site structure before and the naming conventions have held up well as a source.
What our community researcher could not do, and why it matters
Our second researcher tried to count the images himself and could not. /VI/media returned HTTP 200 at 03:04:29 UTC and served 731,586 bytes of JavaScript shell with zero image asset URLs in the served HTML. /VI/screens returned HTTP 404 at the same time. The Rockstar Newswire index served a 6,447-byte shell with no post list, and every guessed feed and API path under it returned 404.
That limitation is the whole reason this story went the way it did. Every count in the press chain above is somebody else's count, taken from somebody else's gallery reading, because the page does not yield to a plain fetch. Our own figures come from parsing the source payload for asset slugs rather than from looking at a rendered gallery, which is a different method and produces a different number, as the 99 against 182 shows.
What is and is not established
CONFIRMED: images were added to Rockstar's official website in the days around the Extended Look. "Adds to site" is supported. "Releases" is a different act and is not.
CLAIMED as to novelty, and contradicted at the origin: RockstarINTEL, which ran the story first, wrote that the screenshots "were previously published and scattered across various publications" and that what Rockstar had provided was uncompressed 4K versions. No outlet downstream has rebutted that.
OUR OWN CORRECTION: our 31 August piece said 28 new. The addition stands. The novelty does not, and we should have carried the origin article's statement that the images had been published before.
CONFIRMED, from our crawl at 03:02:53 UTC on 3 September: the gallery served 2,137,242 bytes and parsed to 182 distinct asset base names, both identical to the figures recorded on 31 August, and the newest Last-Modified across the three live official bundles is 27 August 2026. Nothing has been added since.
CONFIRMED as a count of asset slugs in the page source: 99 distinct screenshot assets across 15 named sets. This is not the same as Rockstar having published exactly 99 screenshots.
Explicitly not claimed: any before-and-after figure. We hold no verified pre-31-August baseline and will not print a subtraction we cannot evidence.
Explicitly not claimed: any YouTube view count, for any video, anywhere in this batch. Every watch page returned an abuse-detection redirect today.
Method limits printed as limits: /VI/media is a JavaScript shell that yields no image URLs, /VI/screens returns 404, the Newswire index is a shell with no readable post list, and the publication time for the YouTube item is a relative string read from a search page rather than an absolute timestamp.
Our record of which Grand Theft Auto VI images are official, which are crops of images already published and which are neither is on the wiki, with the rest of today's coverage on the news desk. The servers list and the leaderboards are there when you would rather play than count files.
