How long is the GTA 6 Extended Look? Nobody has said. Netflix has not published a runtime, Rockstar has not published a runtime, and the "20 minutes" figure being repeated everywhere traces back to a screenshot of a Netflix customer support chat. We fetched both official pages on August 12, 2026 and searched them ourselves. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and where the number came from. What is actually confirmed about August 27 CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 12, 2026): Netflix's Tudum article by R.J. Johnson, dated Aug. 6, 2026, states it verbatim: "In a first-of-its-kind partnership with Netflix, Rockstar Games announced today that Netflix subscribers will have the opportunity to watch an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. ET." CONFIRMED (same retrieval): Rockstar's Newswire page renders its body through JavaScript, so we read its metadata instead. The page description reads verbatim: "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET and will also launch on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET on August 27." So the four things you can rely on: The date: Thursday, August 27, 2026. The Netflix premiere: 3 p.m. ET. The free release: 9 p.m. ET the same day, on Rockstar's YouTube channel and on the Grand Theft Auto VI site. The subscription: needed only if you want the earlier showing. Wait six hours and it costs nothing. CONFIRMED (same retrieval): netflix.com/GTAVI redirects with an HTTP 301 to netflix.com/title/83035795. That title page carries the title "Watch Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look | Netflix" and the description "See the premiere of an extended look at "Grand Theft Auto VI," the next evolution in the groundbreaking "Grand Theft Auto" series, on August 27." No runtime there either. Netflix's VP of Nonfiction Series, Brandon Riegg, is quoted on Tudum, verbatim: "Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented". Note what that does not contain. We searched the official pages for a runtime. There is not one. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 12, 2026): we fetched the full Tudum page and searched its text. There are zero occurrences of "20 minute", "20-minute" or "minutes long" anywhere on it. We also checked the near misses, because we wanted to be certain we were not missing a differently phrased line. The only strings on the page matching "runtime" and "approximately" belong to Netflix's Top 10 methodology boilerplate and to its locale number-formatting data. Neither has anything to do with GTA 6. Netflix states no runtime. Rockstar states no runtime. The Netflix title page states no runtime. Three official surfaces, no figure on any of them. The date and both times are official. The length of the thing is not. Where "20 minutes" came from The provenance runs in a straight line and each step is worth seeing. Around June 2026. YouTuber DarkViperAU said on stream, REPORTED via Vice, verbatim: "I know a guy. He reckons the next trailer is 20 minutes. I assume if it's going to be 20 minutes, it's gonna be a gameplay video." That predates every official announcement about the Extended Look by roughly two months. A gap in our own reporting, stated plainly. A longer version of that quote circulates, apparently carrying a heavier hedge and a prediction that the video would arrive in June, which it did not. Our researcher could not read the page carrying that longer version, which returned HTTP 403, so we are not reproducing it. We would rather tell you the fuller quote exists and that we could not verify its wording than print a version we have not seen at source. August 6, 2026. Rockstar and Netflix announce the showcase. No runtime. August 6, 2026, same day. A Reddit user posting as ZamnBoil shares a screenshot of a Netflix customer support chat. UNVERIFIED as to the post itself: our researcher got HTTP 403 from Reddit on every endpoint tried and could not read the original. It reaches us only through outlets, so we cannot vouch for the screenshot, its context, or whether it has been edited. The chat text, REPORTED via Vice, verbatim: "Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the GTA VI Extended Look on August 27 at 3:00 PM ET. The showcase will last approximately 20 minutes." That sentence, typed by a support agent of unknown nature, is the entire evidentiary basis for the number you have seen in a hundred headlines. How the hedge got sanded off Watch this happen over five days. Vice, published 19:29 UTC on August 6, 2026, by Brent Koepp, got it right, verbatim: "Although it should be pointed out that the customer support agent could be an AI chatbot. As a result, it's unclear how accurate this information is" and "I would take this with a grain of salt until we get an official update from Rockstar Games." ScreenRant, published 09:09 UTC on August 7, 2026, by James Lynch, ran the headline "GTA 6 Netflix Special Length Officially Confirmed". Its own body says, verbatim: "the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look presentation is supposedly set to be 20 minutes long, if Netflix customer support is to be believed." and, verbatim: "the information was likely provided by a chatbot or automated service, though it's difficult to see why they would program that information in if it wasn't true." A headline saying "Officially Confirmed" sits on top of a body saying "supposedly" and "if it is to be believed". GamingBible, published 10:00 on August 10, 2026 GMT+1, by Kate Harrold, names the origin honestly, verbatim: "According to a Netflix customer support agent, as shared by Reddit user ZamnBoil", then states the caveat, verbatim: "It's not known whether this was a real customer service agent or an AI chatbot so it's worth taking with a pinch of salt." and then immediately argues it away, verbatim: "It's hard to think of a reason though as to why Netflix's own chat would spread misinformation." By August 11, GamingBible's next article carries the number as settled background, describing the showcase as "believed to be around 20-minutes of raw gameplay". The chatbot, the Reddit user and the support chat have all disappeared. Five days from screenshot to established fact. Credit where it is due, CONFIRMED: TheGamer published at 11:30 UTC on August 7, 2026 under the headline "Netflix Support Says GTA 6 Extended Look Will Be 20 Minutes Long, But Don't Get Your Hopes Up". Every element is in the headline: the source, the claim, and the warning. The restraint was available to everyone on the same day. A hypothesis, clearly labelled as one Here is something we find interesting and are explicitly not asserting. DarkViperAU's "20 minutes" circulated in June and was covered widely. Many customer support systems now answer using retrieval over a body of text. If Netflix's support assistant were one of those, an August query about the GTA 6 showcase could in principle surface June's coverage of that same figure and hand it back as an answer, which would make the apparent corroboration circular: one unsourced claim reflected back at the person who asked. This is speculation and we are flagging it as speculation. We have no evidence about how Netflix builds its support stack, no confirmation that the agent was automated, and no way to test the idea. It is a mechanism that would explain the coincidence, not a finding that it happened. Treat it as a reason to be careful with the number rather than as a reason to disbelieve it. So is the Extended Look 20 minutes long? It might be. We are not telling you the figure is wrong, because we have no basis for that either. What we are telling you is that it is unconfirmed, that its only known source is a customer support chat screenshotted by a Reddit user whose post we could not read, and that no official Netflix or Rockstar page carries a runtime of any length. If the showcase runs 20 minutes on the day, that will make the support agent right. It will not retroactively have made the claim verified in advance. ScreenRant, August 7 at 09:09 UTC, headlined "Officially Confirmed" while its body said "supposedly" and "if Netflix customer support is to be believed". GamingBible, August 10 at 10:00 GMT+1, named ZamnBoil and the chatbot possibility, then argued it away, and by August 11 was carrying the figure as background. Confirmed, and credited: TheGamer published on August 7 at 11:30 UTC under a headline that named the source and told readers not to get their hopes up. Explicitly labelled speculation: the suggestion that a retrieval-based support assistant might be echoing June coverage of DarkViperAU's figure. We have no evidence about Netflix's support stack and we assert nothing. Explicitly not claimed: that 20 minutes is wrong. It is unconfirmed, which is a different thing. Not obtained: any comment from Netflix, Rockstar or Take-Two on the runtime.
