GTA V passes 230 million sold-in as GTA revenue falls

We read the 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 at SEC EDGAR, along with the prior 10-K and the year ago 10-Q, on 13 August 2026. The filing states over 470 million series units sold-in, over 230 million for GTA V and more than 85 million for Red Dead Redemption 2. The same filing shows GTA revenue falling to 12.8 percent of net revenue from 14.7 percent a year earlier, with NBA 2K carrying the quarter.

Take-Two Interactive filed its quarterly report for the three months ended 30 June 2026 on 7 August. The headline number for most readers is that Grand Theft Auto V has now sold-in over 230 million units and the series has sold-in over 470 million. The number almost nobody carried is in the same document: Grand Theft Auto revenue fell year on year, and NBA 2K is what kept the quarter above water. The numbers in the filing CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): we read the 10-Q at SEC EDGAR, Take-Two Interactive, CIK 0000946581, accession 0001628280-26-054870, filed 2026-08-07 for the quarter ended 30 June 2026. Verbatim from the filing: "We believe that Rockstar Games has established a uniquely original, popular, cultural phenomenon with its Grand Theft Auto series, which is the interactive entertainment industry's most iconic and critically acclaimed brand and has sold-in over 470 million units worldwide. Our most recent installment, Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013, has sold-in over 230 million units worldwide and includes access to Grand Theft Auto Online." And on Rockstar's other flagship, verbatim: "Red Dead Redemption 2, which has been a critical and commercial success that set numerous entertainment industry records, has sold-in more than 85 million units worldwide." CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): we pulled the two prior filings to place those figures in a sequence. The 10-K for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, filed 2026-05-22, accession 0001628280-26-037434, carries the same sentences reading 465 million for the series, 225 million for GTA V and 80 million for Red Dead Redemption 2. The 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 June 2025, filed 2025-08-07, accession 0001628280-25-038963, reads 450 million, 215 million and 75 million. Our arithmetic, and why it is approximate The following is our own computation from the three filings above, not a Take-Two figure. Quarter over quarter, 31 March 2026 to 30 June 2026: series 465 to 470, so plus 5 million. GTA V 225 to 230, plus 5 million. Red Dead Redemption 2 80 to 85, plus 5 million. Year over year for the same quarter, 30 June 2025 to 30 June 2026: series 450 to 470, plus 20 million. GTA V 215 to 230, plus 15 million. Red Dead Redemption 2 75 to 85, plus 10 million. Now the caveat, which matters more than the deltas. Take-Two states all of these as "over" or "more than" a round number, and the numbers move in five million increments. The true figure for GTA V sits somewhere between 230 million and the next threshold Take-Two chooses to cross. That means every delta above is a floor on a range, not a measurement. Three franchises all appearing to gain exactly five million in one quarter is a sign of the rounding convention rather than a real coincidence. Sold-in is not the same as copies sold Take-Two writes "sold-in" every time, and the word is doing work. Sold-in counts units shipped or sold into the retail and distribution channel. Sell-through counts units bought by players. The two diverge, especially around launches and channel restocking, and Take-Two does not publish a sell-through figure for these franchises in the 10-Q. Most aggregator coverage renders these numbers as "copies sold". The filing does not say that. We are keeping the filing's word throughout, and readers comparing 6Charts against other outlets should treat any "230 million copies sold" phrasing as a paraphrase that changes the meaning of the underlying disclosure. An official Grand Theft Auto VI screenshot. Take-Two named 19 November 2026 in the 10-Q itself, so the GTA decline reported here covers a quarter that ended almost five months before the game arrives. The part of the filing that got less attention CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): the same 10-Q states, verbatim: "Sales of Grand Theft Auto products generated 12.8% of our net revenue for the three months ended June 30, 2026. The timing of our Grand Theft Auto product releases may affect our financial performance on a quarterly and annual basis. Rockstar will release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026." The equivalent sentence in the year ago 10-Q reads 14.7 percent for the three months ended 30 June 2025. So GTA shrank as a share of the business. It also shrank in absolute terms, and the filing says so directly. Verbatim, with figures in millions: "For the three months ended June 30, 2026, net revenue increased by $30.1 as compared to the prior year period. The increase was primarily driven by higher net revenue of $89.0 from NBA 2K, partially offset by lower net revenue of $32.8 from Color Block Jam and $24.2 from our Grand Theft Auto series." Total net revenue in the Condensed Consolidated Statements of Operations was $1,533.9 million for the three months ended 30 June 2026, against $1,503.8 million a year earlier. The company reported a net loss of $34.1 million for the quarter, wider than the $11.9 million loss a year earlier. A cross-check we ran ourselves The percentages and the dollar movement are disclosed in different parts of the document, which lets us test one against the other. The following is our own computation. 12.8 percent of $1,533.9 million is about $196.3 million of GTA revenue in the June 2026 quarter. 14.7 percent of $1,503.8 million is about $221.1 million in the June 2025 quarter. $221.1 million minus $196.3 million is about $24.7 million. The filing separately states the GTA decline as $24.2 million. Our derived figure of roughly $24.7 million lands within rounding distance of it, which is what you would expect when both routes describe the same underlying number and the percentages are published to one decimal place. Two independent paths agreeing is the reason we are comfortable presenting the decline as real rather than as a presentational artefact. What this does and does not tell you Take-Two does not break out Grand Theft Auto Online separately from GTA V full game sales in this filing. The $24.2 million decline is a series level figure, so we cannot say which component fell, and we are not going to suggest that players are leaving GTA Online. The filing does not support that reading, and neither do we. One point of context on how this was covered. A good deal of reporting on 7 August framed the quarter around Grand Theft Auto strength. The 10-Q describes GTA as a drag on the period, with NBA 2K providing the growth. That gap is partly explained by document choice: the 8-K earnings release went out the same day and is what most coverage worked from, while the revenue attribution and the sold-in milestones live in the 10-Q. Both are public. They say different things because they contain different disclosures, and the 10-Q is the more detailed of the two. What we confirmed and what we did not CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): over 470 million series units sold-in, over 230 million for GTA V and more than 85 million for Red Dead Redemption 2, from the 10-Q filed 2026-08-07, accession 0001628280-26-054870. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): the prior thresholds of 465, 225 and 80 million in the 10-K filed 2026-05-22, and 450, 215 and 75 million in the 10-Q filed 2025-08-07. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): GTA at 12.8 percent of net revenue this quarter against 14.7 percent a year earlier, the $24.2 million GTA decline, the $89.0 million NBA 2K increase, the $32.8 million Color Block Jam decline, net revenue of $1,533.9 million against $1,503.8 million, a net loss of $34.1 million against $11.9 million, and the stated release date of 19 November 2026. OUR COMPUTATION: the quarterly and annual deltas of plus 5, 15 and 20 million, and the cross-check giving roughly $196.3 million and $221.1 million for a difference of about $24.7 million against the filing's stated $24.2 million. CAVEAT ON OUR OWN ARITHMETIC: Take-Two states these unit figures as "over" or "more than" values in five million increments, so every delta we computed is a floor rather than a measurement. UNVERIFIED: any split between GTA Online and GTA V full game revenue. Take-Two does not disclose it in this filing. WE DECLINE TO CLAIM: that GTA Online engagement is falling, that "sold-in" means copies bought by players, or that any single cause explains the $24.2 million decline.
