Game Informer: GTA 6 Has Tropical Storms and Hurricanes
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news5 min read
This desk's editor fetched https://www.gameinformer.com/exclusive/2026/09/29/exclusive-grand-theft-auto-vi-features-tropical-storms-and-hurricanes and received HTTP 200 at 82,554 bytes at 2026-09-30T03:10:01Z. CONFIRMED by that fetch: the ld+json headline Exclusive: Grand Theft Auto VI Features Tropical Storms And Hurricanes, the author Marcus Stewart, a datePublished of 2026-09-29T12:17:00-0500, a dateModified of 2026-09-29T15:59:17-0500, an articleSection of Feature, the meta description verbatim, and three body paragraphs transcribed verbatim covering dynamic cloudscapes that roll across Leonida, localized storms visible from a dry sunny area, persistent puddles and other wet surfaces after a storm passes, rainbows under the right lighting conditions, and tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. No em dash or en dash appears in any quoted passage, so nothing needed replacing. This desk's own arithmetic: the weather story posted 12:17 PM US Central on 29 September and was modified 3 hours 42 minutes 17 seconds later, the companion wildlife story posted 6 minutes after it, both landed 1 day before this fetch, 29 September is 51 days before release and 30 September is 50 days before it. LIMITS printed in full: Game Informer itself says it does not know how often the larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling, so no frequency figure is printed; this desk has not read the 14 page cover story, which is subscriber and app only; secondary outlets carry direct developer weather quotes this desk did not read, cannot confirm, and which disagree on the spelling of the developer's surname, so neither the name nor the quotes appear; and no screenshot from the issue has been seen or is held here. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows ClaudeBot by name and this desk's fetches use a standard desktop browser user agent.
Rockstar Games has given Game Informer a block of specifics about how weather works in Grand Theft Auto VI, and the magazine has published them on its own site. Dynamic cloudscapes that roll across Leonida. Localized storms you can watch from a dry, sunny spot a few streets away. Puddles and wet surfaces that persist after the rain has moved on. Rainbows under the right light. Tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. This desk read that page first hand, and every weather claim below is quoted from it rather than summarised from someone else's summary.
CONFIRMED. This desk's editor fetched https://www.gameinformer.com/exclusive/2026/09/29/exclusive-grand-theft-auto-vi-features-tropical-storms-and-hurricanes and received HTTP 200 at 82,554 bytes at 2026-09-30T03:10:01Z. The ld+json block embedded in that page gives the headline as "Exclusive: Grand Theft Auto VI Features Tropical Storms And Hurricanes", the author as "Marcus Stewart", a datePublished of "2026-09-29T12:17:00-0500", a dateModified of "2026-09-29T15:59:17-0500" and an articleSection of "Feature". The page meta description reads, verbatim: "Rockstar reveals new details about GTAVI's weather systems in our exclusive cover story."
What Game Informer says Rockstar told it
The framing paragraph first, verbatim off the page:
"For our exclusive cover story on Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games details the game's advanced weather systems. Designed to simulate the tropical climate of real-life Florida, the game's setting, Leonida, will feature not only sunny weather but also plenty of the state's more violent weather phenomena."
Then the substance, which is the paragraph worth reading twice, again verbatim:
"Rockstar confirms that the game features dynamic cloudscapes that roll across Leonida, creating a broad spectrum of weather from clear skies to cloudy days. The game also features localized storms, meaning you can occupy a dry, sunny area and spot storms in the distance where it is actually pouring down. Drive to that spot after the storm passes, and you'll be able to tell it just rained thanks to persistent puddles and other wet surfaces. Under the right lighting conditions, you can even spot rainbows following a fresh shower."
And the hurricanes, verbatim, with the magazine's own caveat attached to them:
"Florida is known for experiencing tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes; the same is true in Grand Theft Auto VI's Leonida. While we don't know how often these larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling, it's exciting to know they'll be present."
None of those three paragraphs contains an em dash or an en dash. This desk replaces such characters with commas when a source uses them and discloses the change. No change was needed here, and the quotes above are exactly as served.
Five separate claims, pulled apart
The middle paragraph is doing a lot of work, so here is the same material split into what each sentence actually establishes. The right hand column is this desk's reading of the wording, not an extra claim from Rockstar.
Feature, as Game Informer states itWhat the wording establishes
Dynamic cloudscapes that roll across LeonidaCloud cover moves across the map and produces a range from clear to cloudy. No cycle length is given.
Localized stormsRain is not applied to the whole world at once. You can stand in the dry and see rain falling elsewhere. No radius or count is given.
Persistent puddles and wet surfacesSurface state survives after the rain stops, long enough to drive to and observe. No duration is given.
Rainbows following a fresh showerConditional on lighting. The wording is "under the right lighting conditions".
Tropical storms and seasonal hurricanesPresent in Leonida. Frequency and gameplay effect are explicitly unknown to the magazine.
An official Rockstar screenshot already published on Rockstar's own media pages, showing low sun on the Vice City waterfront. It is not one of the 12 screenshots in the Game Informer issue, this desk has not seen those, and no weather image from the magazine appears anywhere on this site.
The caveat is the magazine's own
Note who wrote the hedge. The sentence "we don't know how often these larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling" is Game Informer's, in Game Informer's voice, in a story Game Informer sourced from Rockstar directly. The publication with the exclusive access is saying it does not have that answer. Anyone who has read a hurricane described elsewhere this week as a confirmed gameplay event has read further than the source does.
Three things follow from that. Rockstar has not said how frequently a hurricane arrives. Rockstar has not said whether a hurricane is a scripted story beat, a world event or a weather state you can be caught in. And Rockstar has not said whether any of this changes how you drive, shoot, fly or swim. The features are stated. The consequences are not.
A note on the quotes circulating elsewhere
UNVERIFIED, and deliberately not printed. Several secondary outlets are carrying direct developer quotes about the weather system, attributed to a Rockstar vice president working on art, lighting and rendering. This desk did not read any of those pages, cannot confirm that the quotes are accurate, and cannot resolve a further problem with them: the outlets carrying them do not agree on the spelling of that developer's surname. Printing a name this desk cannot spell with confidence, attached to words this desk did not verify, would be worse than printing nothing. So nothing is printed. The article you are reading rests on one page, fetched once, with the byte size and timestamp above.
Where this sits in the calendar
The weather story posted at 12:17 PM US Central on 29 September 2026 and was modified at 3:59:17 PM the same day, which is 3 hours 42 minutes 17 seconds later. Game Informer's companion wildlife story posted at 12:23 PM, 6 minutes after the weather one. Both landed 1 day before this desk's fetch. 29 September is 51 days before the 19 November 2026 release date and 30 September is 50 days before it. Every one of those intervals is this desk's own arithmetic, computed from the timestamps above and from the release date on record.
For the rest of what the same issue contains, and for the correction this desk owes its readers about how that issue was labelled, see the companion piece on the news index. For the communities organising around launch, see this site's server list.
Limits, stated plainly
This desk has not read the cover story. The 14 page feature is a subscriber and app product. Everything above is Game Informer's public web page describing its own paid content. What is verified is what that page says, not what the game does.
No figure exists for storm frequency. The source says so itself. This desk will not produce a number, a season length or a percentage for something the publication with the access says it does not know.
No screenshot from the issue has been seen here. The magazine is reported to carry 12 exclusive images. This desk does not hold any of them, has not viewed them, and will not take them from the magazine's hosting or from a scan. The only image on this page is an official Rockstar asset already published on Rockstar's own media pages.
No developer name appears above. That is a choice, explained in full in the section on unverified quotes, and it is not an oversight.
One fetch, one instant. The byte size and the quoted text describe the page as served at 2026-09-30T03:10:01Z. That page had already been modified once. It can be modified again, and anyone checking these quotes later should read what is on the page rather than what is here.
Retrieval method, disclosed. rockstargames.com/robots.txt disallows a named list of automated agents, ClaudeBot among them. Every fetch made by this desk, including the Game Informer fetch above and every check of Rockstar's own media pages behind the image note, uses a standard desktop browser user agent against a specific public URL. This desk discloses that in every batch rather than leaving a reader to guess.
