FiveM and RedM Fail to Launch on a Signature Error

by 6Charts Team Category: news 6 min read

We pulled the Cfx.re thread data directly on 20 August. The error is "Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper", it reproduces on a fresh install, and it affects RedM as well as FiveM. Scale discipline matters here: this is one thread with four affected users, a forum search returns exactly one topic, and FiveM is not down. We report the CitizenFX.ini workaround because people are using it, and we do not recommend it, because Cfx.re has not endorsed it and it moves you onto the canary update channel.

A small number of FiveM and RedM players cannot launch either client, and the error they are hitting is a signature check that Windows itself says should pass. The message is "Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper." As of 20 August 2026 no Cfx.re staff member has replied to the report, and the only thing resembling a fix has come from another player. Scale first, because this story gets exaggerated the moment it leaves the forum. This is one thread with a handful of affected users. A forum search for "elevation helper" covering everything after 15 August returns exactly one topic. FiveM is not down. Why is FiveM not launching with an elevation helper error? The client is refusing to trust the digital signature on RGL-ElevationHelper.exe, the small Rockstar binary FiveM uses to relaunch the Rockstar launcher with elevated permissions. Nobody has established why, and the reporting user's own checks make it stranger rather than clearer. CONFIRMED, re-verified by pulling the thread's underlying data directly on 20 August 2026, HTTP 200. The thread is titled "FiveM fails to verify the signature of RGL-ElevationHelper.exe even though Windows reports the signature as valid". It was opened by forum user TaS_Tazoski on 19 August 2026 at 17:00:50 UTC. At our check it showed 172 views and 7 posts. The opening post, verbatim: "FiveM does not start and shows: 'Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper.'" The CitizenFX log lines quoted in that post: [ROSLauncher] InitROS: Epic [ROSLauncher] Launcher requires elevation - using elevated helper [ROSLauncher] Error: Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper. The same user reports that Windows validates the identical binary without complaint: status Valid, "Signature verified", signer "Rockstar Games, Inc.", certificate valid to 06.09.2027. They add that the failure reproduces on a completely fresh FiveM installation, which rules out the usual first suggestion of a corrupted local cache. It is not limited to one machine, or to FiveM Three other users reported the same thing in the same thread within hours. SpudzXO, 19 August at 19:35 UTC: "I am having the same issue have tried alot of ''fixes'' too". chestiras232, 19 August at 20:58 UTC, and this is the detail that matters: "Same happening for me on RedM. Tried everything - nothing helps". RedM is the Red Dead Redemption 2 equivalent of FiveM, so whatever this is reaches across both clients. Kammikazy09, 19 August at 23:08 UTC: "btw this looks a new error so i think no one knows how to fix this yet". Roleplay servers are where a large part of the GTA community waits out the run-up to November. Images here are official Rockstar press screenshots. The workaround came from a player, and we are not recommending it Kammikazy09 posted one at 23:50 UTC on 19 August: editing CitizenFX.ini to add a [Game] block containing an explicit IVPath pointing at the GTA V installation, plus UpdateChannel=canary. Encryptedpilot confirmed it worked for them at 00:12 UTC on 20 August: "I will agreee this works as a patach till it gets fixeds next update". That is two users, one reporting and one confirming. We are telling you it exists because it is what people in the thread are doing, and stopping there. Cfx.re has not endorsed it. Switching to the canary update channel is a change to how your client receives updates rather than a one-off patch, and it puts you on builds intended for testing. If you are not comfortable hand-editing a configuration file and reverting it later, the sensible move is to wait for a proper fix. Nobody official has responded CONFIRMED NEGATIVE, and we checked this the careful way. We examined the staff flags on every post in the thread. The only account carrying staff, admin or moderator flags is the automated "system" welcome bot. No Cfx.re staff member has replied. Take that for exactly what it is worth. The thread is roughly a day old, it has 172 views, and platform teams do not generally answer every forum report within 24 hours. It also means that as of this writing there is no acknowledged bug, no tracking issue anybody has pointed at, and no stated timeline. What nobody knows yet The root cause. A signature that Windows accepts and FiveM rejects can come from a certificate chain the client evaluates differently, a client-side pin, a changed binary or a mismatch between what the client expects and what is on disk. Nobody in the thread has established which, and we are not going to guess. How many people are affected. Four users in one thread is what we can see. It is not a measurement. Whether Cfx.re has acknowledged it anywhere we cannot reach. Discord in particular is not visible to us, so an acknowledgement may exist somewhere we did not look. Whether anything on Rockstar's side is involved. The binary is Rockstar's and the failing check is on a Rockstar signature, which is suggestive and is not evidence. One detail is worth recording without a conclusion attached. The reporting user's launcher path is Epic, per the InitROS line in their log, while the user who found the workaround points the config at a GTA V installation and reports success. Whether the launcher platform is relevant here is exactly the kind of thing that looks obvious in hindsight and wrong in the moment, so we are logging it rather than building on it. The timing, briefly This lands eight days before the GTA 6 Extended Look on 27 August, at a point where the GTA roleplay scene has consolidated heavily onto one platform. When a single client covers that much of the community's playtime, a launch failure affecting even a handful of users is worth writing down, because there is nowhere obvious for those users to go instead. That is the whole of the context and we are not going to stretch it further. What is and is not established Confirmed (our own direct retrieval of the thread data, 20 August 2026, HTTP 200): the thread was opened by TaS_Tazoski at 2026-08-19T17:00:50Z and showed 172 views and 7 posts at our check. The error string, the three ROSLauncher log lines, and the report that Windows validates the same binary as signed by "Rockstar Games, Inc." with a certificate valid to 06.09.2027, on a fresh installation. Confirmed (same retrieval): same-issue reports from SpudzXO and Kammikazy09, and from chestiras232 on RedM rather than FiveM. Confirmed (same retrieval): the CitizenFX.ini workaround was posted by Kammikazy09 at 2026-08-19T23:50Z and confirmed as working by Encryptedpilot at 2026-08-20T00:12Z. Confirmed negative (staff flags checked on every post in the stream): the only flagged account in the thread is the automated system welcome bot. No Cfx.re staff member has replied. Scale, stated plainly: a forum search for "elevation helper" after 15 August 2026 returns exactly one topic. This is one thread with a handful of affected users and it is not a mass outage. Reported, not recommended: the workaround. Cfx.re has not endorsed it, the canary channel changes how the client updates, and anyone uncomfortable editing a config file should wait for a fix. Not known: the root cause, the number of affected users, whether Cfx.re has acknowledged the issue on channels we cannot reach, and whether anything on Rockstar's side is connected. Logged without conclusion: the reporting user launches through Epic while the workaround points at a GTA V install. That may or may not matter. If Cfx.re posts an acknowledgement or a fix, we will update this with the retrieval attached on our news page. If you are looking for somewhere to play in the meantime, our servers list is the place to start.
