Rockstar Rebuilt Its GTA 6 Wallpaper Pack on 16 September
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news8 min read
This desk's editor confirmed all five bundle headers first hand at 2026-09-24T03:22:17Z, HTTP 200 on every one, with the wallpapers bundle at 225,678,428 bytes and Wed, 16 Sep 2026 14:35:03 GMT. The archive structure is this desk's own inspection: a byte range request returned HTTP 206 at 2026-09-24T03:14:29Z, the end of central directory record put the directory at offset 225,661,154 across 17,252 bytes, and it parsed to 148 entries, 24 directories and 124 files. The date histogram is 3 files on 2026-09-10 and 121 on 2026-09-16, and the three outliers are The_Album_Cover_Art landscape, square and portrait at 3,495,890, 2,094,963 and 1,114,328 bytes. The 215.22 MiB conversion, the 1.76 per cent compression, the 2.92 per cent and 2.42 per cent album shares and the 64 day interval are this desk's own arithmetic. The web page serves a 704,378 byte resized derivative of the same landscape file while the ZIP carries the full master, which is why two correct readings differ, and the article says so. No earlier copy of the bundle was available, so absence before 16 September is not claimed.
Rockstar rebuilt its official Grand Theft Auto VI wallpaper bundle on 16 September 2026. It is the only one of the five official download bundles with a September date on it, it now runs to 225,678,428 bytes, and inside it, three files carry a different internal timestamp from the other 121. Those three are The Album cover art.
This desk read the archive's central directory over an HTTP range request rather than downloading 215 MiB of JPEGs, and checked every bundle on the content delivery network alongside it.
The five bundles, and which one moved
CONFIRMED. This desk's editor ran HEAD requests against all five official download bundles under /VI/downloads/ on media-rockstargames-com.akamaized.net at 2026-09-24T03:22:17Z. All five answered HTTP 200.

Two bundles sit in June, two in August, one in September. The wallpapers bundle is the only one later than August, and it is the subject of the rest of this piece.
By this desk's own arithmetic, 225,678,428 bytes is 215.22 MiB, or 225.68 MB decimal. 16 September to today is 8 days, and 16 September to 19 November is 64 days.
Reading the archive without downloading it
CONFIRMED, and this is this desk's own inspection rather than anything Rockstar discloses. A ZIP file keeps its index at the end. A byte range request for the last 200,000 bytes of the bundle returned HTTP 206 at 2026-09-24T03:14:29Z, and that block contained the end of central directory record. The central directory sits at offset 225,661,154, is 17,252 bytes long, and holds 148 entries: 24 directory entries and 124 files.
Every entry carries a modification timestamp. The histogram of those timestamps is the finding:
Internal file dateFiles
2026-09-103
2026-09-16121
The three outliers, verbatim as stored in the directory:
PathBytesStored timestamp
The_Album_Cover_Art/The_Album_Cover_Art_landscape.jpg3,495,8902026-09-10 11:02:22
The_Album_Cover_Art/The_Album_Cover_Art_square.jpg2,094,9632026-09-10 11:02:58
The_Album_Cover_Art/The_Album_Cover_Art_portrait.jpg1,114,3282026-09-10 11:03:58
The directory entry for that folder is itself stamped 2026-09-16 10:34:26, which is one minute forty-two seconds after the last of the other 121 files. That ordering is consistent with three files being dropped into an otherwise fresh build, and it is consistent with other explanations too, so it is offered as an observation rather than a conclusion.
What is in the pack
CONFIRMED, read off the same central directory. The bundle holds eighteen top-level sets: Boobie_Ike, Brian_Heder, Cal_Hampton, DreQuan_Priest, Jason_Lucia_Motel, Jason_and_Lucia_01, Jason_and_Lucia_01_With_Logos, Jason_and_Lucia_02, Jason_and_Lucia_02_With_Logos, Jason_and_Lucia_Beach, Jason_and_Lucia_Beach_With_Logos, Jason_and_Lucia_Robbery, Jason_and_Lucia_Robbery_With_Logo, Official_Cover_Art, Postcards, Raul_Bautista, Real_Dimez and The_Album_Cover_Art. The Postcards set contains six sub-sets: Ambrosia, Grassrivers, Leonida_Keys, Mount_Kalaga_National_Park, Port_Gellhorn and Vice_City.
Aspect variants across the 124 files run landscape 23, portrait 23, square 23, tablet 18, ultrawide 18, phone 17, plus one phone_A and one phone_B. The Album set ships only landscape, portrait and square, which makes it one of the thinner sets in the pack.
Three pieces of this desk's own arithmetic on those figures. The three album files total 6,705,181 bytes, which is 2.92 per cent of the pack by uncompressed size and 2.42 per cent of it by file count. The sum of uncompressed sizes across the directory is 229,717,478 bytes against 225,678,428 on disk, so the archive saves 1.76 per cent, which is what a bag of photographic JPEGs should compress to and a useful check that these really are photographic assets rather than anything else.
The two byte counts for the same picture, explained
This part matters, because two different readings of the same filename look like a contradiction and are not one.
This desk downloaded The_Album_Cover_Art_landscape.jpg from Rockstar's media page and measured it at 704,378 bytes, a real progressive JPEG at 3840 by 2160. The same filename inside the ZIP is 3,495,890 bytes. Both readings are correct. The web page serves a resized derivative through Rockstar's image pipeline, and the bundle carries the full master. Anyone comparing a figure pulled off the site with a figure pulled out of the archive is comparing two different files that share a name.
The site-served copies carry content-hashed filenames, which is the tell. The media page HTML contains, verbatim, Album_Cover_Art_landscape.000ifb9a.j-gp.jpg, Album_Cover_Art_portrait.10ymqbh.qytj7.jpg and Album_Cover_Art_square.0s5-7fm8xnns8.jpg. Individual files are not separately addressable inside the bundle path: a HEAD on the album landscape file under the downloads directory returned HTTP 404 with a content-length of 10 at 2026-09-24T03:14:55Z. The art lives in two places, in the ZIP and behind the site's hashed asset names, and nowhere else.
Why the album art showing up here is interesting
The Album is a real, dated commercial product with a tracklist and a ship date, and this desk has covered both: the tracklist reading is at the 34-track kit reading and the shipping discrepancy is at the 20 November line item. Cover art for that product now travels inside the official wallpaper bundle, at full master resolution, alongside character art and postcards.
That is a distribution fact, and it is the whole of the claim being made. No release date for anything is inferred from it, and nothing about the album's contents is inferred from it.
Limits on all of the above
ZIP timestamps have two-second resolution and carry no timezone. 2026-09-10 11:02:22 is a wall clock on whatever machine built the archive, and this desk does not know that machine's timezone and will not pretend to.
This desk holds no earlier copy of this bundle. It cannot prove The_Album_Cover_Art was absent before 16 September. What it can prove is that those three files are stamped differently from the other 121, and that this bundle's own last-modified is September while every sibling bundle is June or August. An archive capture would settle it and none was reachable from here.
The file sizes above come from the archive's own central directory, not from downloading and hashing the JPEGs. Whether the media page itself changed on 16 September is unproven: it sends no last-modified header at all.
One more caution on a number that invites over-reading. The Akamai etag on the wallpapers bundle ends in a Unix epoch which decodes to 2026-09-17T12:07:38Z, roughly 21.5 hours after its own last-modified header. The two fields measure different events on the delivery network's side and should never be presented as one date. That decoding is this desk's own conversion.
What it adds up to
Something shipped on 16 September 2026, it is datable to the byte, and it is the only official Rockstar asset bundle to move since August. Against a long quiet stretch on the Newswire, which this desk logged in the Newswire silence check, and against the last large screenshot drop in the 31 August screenshot additions, a rebuilt wallpaper pack with three album files in it is a small event with a hard timestamp on it. With 56 days to go, which is this desk's own arithmetic, small events with hard timestamps are what there is.
