The GTA 6 30fps Story, and How a Portuguese Hedge Became an English Certainty
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news11 min read
Flow Games in Brazil, fetched at HTTP 200 and 402,834 bytes, is the source of the entire chain, and its own section heading puts "for now" in quotation marks. We trace how the claim firmed up at each step, credit Kotaku for printing its chain and Vice for keeping the caveat, and then add our own evidence: Rockstar's published 4K master runs at exactly 30.000fps across 48,242 frames. That corroborates the hedged claim and does not prove the shipping game is locked. Plus the parallel 11x map divergence, where two reporters rendered the same executive's figure as two different claims, and the preview programme most of this week's details actually came from.
The original report that GTA 6 runs at 30fps on consoles said "for now". It said the game is at 30fps during this period of development, that Rockstar's Rob Nelson had yet to consult the technical team about whether a 60fps option would arrive at launch or later, and that he had no resolution or ray-tracing detail to offer. By the time that reached English-language headlines it had become "will be 30FPS at launch".
We hold both originals. We also hold something none of the outlets in that chain used: Rockstar's own published 4K master of the Extended Look, which we measured at exactly 30.000 frames per second. The hedged claim turns out to be well supported. The unhedged version of it is still not what the source said.
What did the original Brazilian report actually say?
CONFIRMED, we fetched it: Flow Games, by Bruno Micali, dated 27.08.2026, HTTP 200 at 402,834 bytes. This is the origin of the entire chain.
Its own section heading reads, verbatim, "30 FPS nos consoles 'por enquanto'". Translated, and the translation is ours: "30 FPS on consoles 'for now'". The quotation marks around "for now" are in the original heading. They are the author flagging the conditional.
The body carries three things, and all three matter:
During this period of development, the consoles run the game at 30fps.
Rob Nelson still needs to consult the technical team about whether a 60 FPS option arrives at launch or afterwards.
He did not have resolution or ray-tracing details to give.
Read those together and the reporting is careful. A development-period frame rate, an open question about a performance mode, and an executive who declined to guess about specifications he did not have to hand.
How did "for now" become "at launch"?
Through a chain of headlines, each one a little firmer than the last.

Watch the two words that change. "For now" becomes "at launch", which is a different claim about a different moment in time. And in the Beebom rendering the word "locked" appears, which the source does not support at all: a development-period frame rate with an unresolved 60fps option is close to the opposite of locked.
Now the fairness, and we are going to be specific about it. Kotaku is transparent about its chain. Its piece prints the machine-translated excerpt, credits Flow Games and credits the Brazilian creator whose interview it came from. A reader who reads the whole article can see exactly where the claim came from and how firm it is. The headline still overstates the source Kotaku itself quotes, and headlines are what travel. That is a criticism of one line of one article, and it is not an accusation of bad faith against anybody.
CONFIRMED, and credit where it belongs. Vice is the one outlet in the material we gathered that kept the caveat explicitly, verbatim: "Rockstar has not officially confirmed the reported frame-rate limitations or absence of first-person mode."
Every image on this page is official Rockstar material. Nothing on this page comes from leaked material, and we did not view any.
What does our own measurement add?
Hard evidence that nobody in the chain used, pointing the same way as the careful version of the claim.
CONFIRMED, measured by us. We pulled Rockstar's own published 4K master of the Extended Look from its content delivery network and parsed the container. The video runs at exactly 30.000 frames per second, across 48,242 frames, from a sample-table delta of 512 at a timescale of 15360. That is 15360 divided by 512, which is 30 with nothing after the decimal point. Not 29.97, not variable, not an average. We set out the full measurement, with status codes and byte counts, in a separate piece today.
Now the limits, stated plainly, because this is exactly the number that will be misquoted. What we measured is the delivery frame rate of a video file that Rockstar says was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. It is consistent with the reporting and it corroborates the hedged claim. It does not prove the shipping game is locked to 30fps, because a marketing master can be delivered at a rate that has nothing to do with what a console does in November. We are offering supporting evidence rather than a proof, and labelling it that way on purpose.
REPORTED, offered as colour and nothing more. A commenter on Push Square wrote "30 fps sucked! Hope at least 40 fps for Pro", perceiving it while watching. One person's eyes on a compressed stream measure nothing.
Is the GTA 6 map really 11 times bigger?
Two reporters got the same figure from the same executive on the same day and rendered it as two different claims. We hold both, and we cannot reconcile them.
CONFIRMED, TGG as quoted by Kotaku, verbatim:
[Head of development Rob Nelson] threw some figures at me. The map is twice the size of GTA 5's map, three times the size of Red Dead 2's map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos. And Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings, which is, like, nuts, dude.
CONFIRMED, Flow Games, same executive, same day, verbatim in Portuguese: "As areas construidas fora da cidade tem, na verdade, 11 vezes a quantidade [do anterior]". Our translation: the built-up areas outside the city have, in fact, 11 times the quantity of the previous game. The bracketed [do anterior] is Flow Games' own interpolation, which the publication has flagged by bracketing it.
Those are not the same claim. One is a total-area multiplier covering a city plus its surroundings against another city plus its surroundings. The other is a count of built-up areas outside the city. A number can be true in the first sense and meaningless in the second, or the other way round.
This is unresolvable without the raw audio, which neither we nor, as far as we can tell, anybody else has published. The practical advice is simple: do not print "the GTA 6 map is 11 times bigger" flatly. Two competent reporters heard the same sentence and wrote down two different things, which is usually a sign that the sentence itself was doing a lot of work.
Where did all these GTA 6 details actually come from?
This is the structural point of the day, and most coverage has skipped it.
Almost none of the "GTA 6 details" trending since Thursday came out of the Extended Look. They came out of an embargoed hands-off preview programme run at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where press and creators were shown material and briefed by developers. Attendees included The New York Times, IGN, the French magazine TROISCOULEURS, and creators including TGG and a Brazilian YouTuber.
Why that distinction matters: the video is a fixed artefact anybody can rewatch and check. The preview programme produced dozens of separate accounts of the same conversations, in several languages, filtered through different note-taking, translation and editorial standards. When two of those accounts disagree, as they do about the 11 times figure, there is nothing to rewatch. Treating the two channels as one pile of equally solid facts will get you into trouble.
What else did Rob Nelson say?
CONFIRMED as quotations we hold in the original Portuguese from Flow Games. The English is our translation and we mark it as ours.
On the economy: "Dinheiro importa mais do que jamais importou". Money matters more than it ever has.
On fuel: "E algo que tentamos fazer de modo que nao seja irritante". It is something we tried to do in a way that is not annoying.
On non-lethal shots: "Voce pode atirar no joelho, cotovelo, braco ou qualquer coisa assim, e eles vao cair e nao vao se levantar novamente, nao vao atirar de volta". You can shoot the knee, elbow, arm or anything like that, and they will go down and will not get up again, and will not shoot back.
On multiple endings: "Voce tera de descobrir". You will have to find out.
REPORTED from the same interview, and we have not verified these independently: that there is no full first-person mode, with first person available only while aiming certain weapons; that hit indicators are white for a hit, yellow for incapacitated and red for a kill, feeding a "Criminal Profile" system; and that the player carries two short and two long weapons, with long guns visible on the body and the car boot usable as storage.
What could we not verify?
Three things, and the third is a correction in its own right.
The New York Times piece returned HTTP 403 to us. That article is the origin of the widely repeated 80-hour main story figure and the 600,000 animations figure. Both therefore reach us second-hand, through outlets quoting it, and we have not read the original. We are not disputing either number. We are telling you we have not seen its source.
GameSpot returned HTTP 403 on both attempts. The claims attributed to it, that there are no microtransactions in single-player and no generative AI in the game, are unverified by us.
And a note about that generative-AI line. It is being circulated this week as though it were said in connection with the Extended Look. It is an older Strauss Zelnick remark being recycled. Treat any headline presenting it as fresh comment with the caution it deserves.
Two things worth reporting neutrally about Eurogamer's coverage. Its headline says Rockstar "confirms" the 600,000 animation figure while its own body attributes the figure to The New York Times, which are two different sourcing claims in one article. And it misspells the state as "Leonidas" when the setting is Leonida. Neither is a scandal. Both are the kind of thing that propagates when a story is rewritten quickly at volume.
What is and is not established
Confirmed, HTTP 200 at 402,834 bytes: the origin report is Flow Games (Brazil), by Bruno Micali, 27.08.2026. Its own section heading reads "30 FPS nos consoles 'por enquanto'", which is "30 FPS on consoles 'for now'".
Confirmed from that report: consoles run at 30fps during this development period, Rob Nelson still needs to consult the technical team about whether a 60 FPS option arrives at launch or later, and he had no resolution or ray-tracing details to give.
Confirmed, HTTP 200 at 126,675 bytes: Kotaku's headline reads "GTA 6 Will Be 30FPS At Launch, Rockstar Reportedly Not Sure About 60FPS". Kotaku prints the machine-translated excerpt and credits both Flow Games and the Brazilian creator, and its headline still states more firmly than the source it quotes.
Unverified as to exact wording: Beebom's headline, seen via search and not fetched by us. The word "locked" in it is not supported by the origin report.
Confirmed, HTTP 200: the top r/GamingLeaksAndRumours post reads "GTA 6 Will Be 30FPS at Launch According to Content Creator", 896 upvotes, 692 comments.
Confirmed, and credited: Vice kept the caveat, verbatim, that Rockstar has not officially confirmed the reported frame-rate limitations or absence of first-person mode.
Confirmed, measured by us: Rockstar's published 4K master of the Extended Look runs at exactly 30.000 fps across 48,242 frames, from a sample-table delta of 512 at timescale 15360.
Explicitly not claimed: that this proves the shipping game is locked to 30fps. It establishes the delivery frame rate of a video and it corroborates the reporting. It is supporting evidence and nothing stronger.
Reported, as colour only: a Push Square commenter perceived 30fps while watching. One viewer's impression of a compressed stream measures nothing.
Confirmed, both renderings held: TGG via Kotaku gives Vice City plus surrounding suburbs as 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings. Flow Games gives the built-up areas outside the city as having 11 times the quantity, with the bracketed comparison being Flow Games' own interpolation. These are different claims and the divergence is unresolvable without the raw audio.
Context, and the structural point: these figures come from an embargoed hands-off preview programme at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, not from the Extended Look. Attendees included The New York Times, IGN, TROISCOULEURS, and creators including TGG and a Brazilian YouTuber.
Not verified by us, HTTP 403: The New York Times piece, which is the origin of the 80-hour and 600,000-animation figures. Both reach us second-hand.
Not verified by us, HTTP 403 on both attempts: GameSpot, and with it the claims of no microtransactions in single-player and no generative AI.
Corrected: the generative-AI remark is an older Strauss Zelnick quote being recycled, and it is not fresh comment made in connection with the Extended Look.
Reported neutrally: Eurogamer's headline says Rockstar confirms the 600,000 animation figure while its body attributes it to The New York Times, and it misspells the setting as "Leonidas" when it is Leonida.
We will update this the moment Rockstar publishes a formal performance specification, on our news page. If you want somewhere to be until 19 November, our servers list is the place to start.
