Japan Bought 158 Xbox Series Consoles in a Week, PS5 Sold 7,494

Source is Gematsu's write-up of Famitsu, published 17 September 2026 and covering 7 to 13 September 2026. Famitsu itself is paywalled and nobody on this desk has read the original, which is stated in the article rather than buried. The full ten-row hardware table is reproduced, led by Switch 2 at 28,341 for the week and PS5 Digital Edition at 7,082. Family groupings are this desk's own arithmetic, recomputed rather than copied: Xbox Series X 92 plus Xbox Series X Digital Edition 51 plus Xbox Series S 15 equals 158 for the week; PS5 Digital 7,082 plus PS5 Pro 295 plus PS5 117 equals 7,494; lifetime Xbox Series 705,202 against PS5 family 7,719,266. The caveat is printed in full: Famitsu tracks physical retail and undercounts digital, which is a real limit on any install-base argument drawn from it.
Japan is the only country on earth where Grand Theft Auto V is the most-watched game on Twitch. In the week of 7 to 13 September 2026, Japan bought 158 Xbox Series consoles. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series only.
Those two facts sit oddly together, and the gap between them is the most interesting thing about the Japanese market ahead of 19 November 2026, which is 57 days from today by this desk's own arithmetic.
Where these numbers come from, and who has not read them
CONFIRMED, with a sourcing limit stated up front. The figures below come from Gematsu's write-up, published 17 September 2026 and covering the week of 7 to 13 September 2026. Gematsu carries Famitsu's weekly sales data. Famitsu itself is paywalled, and nobody on this desk has read the original. Everything here is one step removed from the primary source, and that is said now rather than buried at the bottom.
The full hardware table
CONFIRMED. Every platform, weekly and lifetime, exactly as published.

The arithmetic, all of it this desk's own
The table above is published in per-model rows. Grouping it by family is this desk's own arithmetic, recomputed rather than copied, and every figure in this section is labelled as such.
Xbox Series family, that week: 92 plus 51 plus 15 equals 158 units.
PS5 family, that week: 7,082 plus 295 plus 117 equals 7,494 units.
Weekly ratio: PS5 outsold Xbox Series by 47.43 times.
Xbox Series lifetime in Japan: 705,202 units.
PS5 family lifetime in Japan: 7,719,266 units, a ratio of 10.95 times.
The weekly gap is more than four times as wide as the lifetime gap. Whatever Xbox's position in Japan has been historically, the current rate of sale is worse than the accumulated base suggests.
The caveat that has to be printed
CAVEAT, and it limits every install-base argument above. Famitsu tracks physical retail sales in Japan. It undercounts digital, and in a market that has shifted heavily toward download purchasing over the last decade, that is a real and material limit. The 158 figure is 158 boxes across a Japanese retail panel in one week. It is not a count of every Xbox Series console that entered a Japanese home that week, and nobody should read it as one.
Two further limits worth stating. One week is one week, and console hardware sales are spiky around bundles, price moves and launches. And the Switch 2's 28,341 at the top of the table is a reminder that the Japanese hardware market is being won by a platform GTA 6 does not ship on at all.
Why this pairs with the Twitch data
Japan watches more GTA than any other region relative to everything else it watches. Twitch's own State of Gaming 2026 report, published 9 September 2026, puts GTA V first in Japan and first nowhere else, with Fps_shaka among the category's top three streamers platform-wide. The appetite is measurable and it is the strongest in the world.
The hardware to act on that appetite is not being bought at anything like the same rate. PS5 carries essentially the whole of it: 7,494 units against 158 in the same week, by this desk's own arithmetic. If GTA 6 sells in Japan, it sells on PlayStation, and the Xbox Series install base there is a rounding error on the comparison.
What this does not predict. Nothing here forecasts GTA 6 sales in Japan, and no such forecast is offered. Watching a game is not buying a console, a large viewership does not convert at any known rate, and a single retail week in September says nothing about what November looks like. Publishers routinely see hardware move on the back of a launch, and that is exactly the sort of thing this table will show later rather than now.
What is established is narrower. On the week Famitsu measured, the platform GTA 6 launches on in Japan moved 7,494 units, its competitor moved 158, and the country doing the watching is the one where Rockstar's last game still tops the charts thirteen years on. This desk has looked at Japanese GTA 6 retail paperwork before, in our reporting on the 170 day expiry printed on Japanese download codes, and the pattern there was the same: Japan gets treated as its own market, with its own rules and its own numbers.
