Rockstar did not follow xQc, and the real signal was music

On 7 August a small tracking account posted a screenshot of the last ten accounts Rockstar Games followed on Instagram. Within a day it had reached Reddit and syndicated games coverage, framed as a streamer marketing push for Grand Theft Auto VI. The list is real. The version most people read is not accurate, and the most interesting thing in the tracker's data was posted the same night to almost no audience. The list, as published CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): the account is x.com/RSGFollows, named "Rockstar Follow Log", with a bio reading verbatim: "Tracking every change to Rockstar Games Instagram following list. No speculation. Not affiliated with Rockstar Games." The origin post went up on 7 August 2026 at 17:34:22 UTC and had 430 views when we pulled it. It opens: "The last 10 accounts Rockstar Games followed on Instagram." We downloaded and read the attached image ourselves. The ten accounts, in the order shown, are prospa__ (Prospa), erling (Erling Braut Haaland), timthetatman, brookeabb (Brooke), jynxzi (Nicholas Stewart), fuslie (Leslie), bigmoistcr1tikal (Charlie), valkyrae (rae), marchingpowderthemovie (Marching Powder) and officialdannydyer (Danny Dyer). The tweet closes: "6 of the 10 are streamers." xQc does not appear anywhere in that list. The sixth streamer is brookeabb. The error, and the theory built on it CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): Notebookcheck, author Marius Muller, published 8 August 2026 at 13:02 and updated at 13:04:52, states verbatim: "The six streamers in question are Jynxzi, MoistCr1TiKaL, Valkyrae, Fuslie and TimTheTatman from the US, as well as Canadian streamer xQc." The article never mentions BrookeAB or brookeabb anywhere. A wrong name would be a small thing on its own. Here it carries weight, because the article uses it to reach a conclusion. Verbatim: "Since Valkyrae, Fuslie and xQc have all been active in the NoPixel scene before, Rockstar could be bringing the streamers on board to promote the new version." Remove xQc, insert BrookeAB, and a third of the evidence for that reading disappears. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): GTABOOM, published 10 August 2026, got the list right, naming Valkyrae, Fuslie, MoistCr1TiKaL, Jynxzi, TimTheTatman and BrookeAB. So the correct version was available and in circulation. Readers on r/GTA6 caught it too. One comment from u/Due-Ad4970 reads simply "wtf brookeab? lmao". And in a neat piece of accidental proof, u/AnaxesR7 argued for a name that was absent: "Just off the top of my head, xQc and CaseOh are super R* fans and seem like the perfect candidates for a sponsor." You do not argue that someone should have been picked if you have just read their name on the list. How it travelled CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): the chain is short and fast. The tracker posted at 17:34:22 UTC on 7 August with 430 views. A screenshot went up on r/GTA6 by u/luldark at 18:43:29 UTC, 69 minutes later, titled "Rockstar's last 10 instagram follows are 6 streamers. Streamer marketing push incoming?", reaching 1,101 points and 212 comments. Notebookcheck published at 13:02 UTC on 8 August, crediting "one attentive user in the GTA 6 subreddit" and linking the Reddit post without naming the user. Syndication followed. We cannot tell you why the substitution happened. We did not contact Notebookcheck, and gamegpu returned HTTP 403 so we could not check which version that site carried. We record the error and assign no motive to it. Four of the ten are not new The framing that made this travel was that Rockstar had just followed ten accounts. The tracker itself never said that. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): in a separate reply on 7 August 2026 at 23:02:01 UTC, with 139 views, the tracker wrote: "Rockstar followed 6 streamers that week. he's one of them." By its own framing, only the six streamers belong to that week. The other four sit in the last ten because nothing has displaced them. REPORTED: Notebookcheck presents all ten as current activity, including that "Haaland recently named GTA 5 as one of his favorite games", that "Dyer voiced Kent Paul in Vice City and San Andreas", and a reference to "the official account for the film Marching Powder". Two of those four have an obvious and old explanation. CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): Rockstar publicly promoted Marching Powder on 6 March 2025. Insider Gaming, author Grant Taylor-Hill, 7 March 2025, quotes Rockstar's post verbatim: "From our friends Nick Love and Danny Dyer, the absolute legends behind The Football Factory... @MarchingPowder_ - a proper naughty comedy out tomorrow in the UK and Ireland." The relationship behind that post is 22 years old. The Football Factory, released 14 May 2004 and directed by Nick Love with Danny Dyer starring, lists Vertigo Films and Rockstar Games as production companies with Rockstar credited as executive producers, and is described as the studio's first move into filmmaking. Marching Powder in 2025 is the same pairing. REPORTED: Danny Dyer voiced Kent Paul in Grand Theft Auto Vice City in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004. We could not confirm the date Rockstar followed officialdannydyer or marchingpowderthemovie. March 2025 is a strong inference from the promotional post rather than a confirmed follow date, so "roughly 17 months old" is our inference too. Instagram returned HTTP 429, so we could not audit the list directly. Any suggestion that these follows point to Kent Paul returning in GTA VI is unverified and independently unlikely, given the series rebooted its universe at GTA IV. An official Grand Theft Auto VI screenshot. Music is the strand of the follow data nobody covered, though a screenshot is not evidence about a soundtrack and we do not present it as one. The finding nobody read CONFIRMED (our own retrieval, August 13, 2026): at 00:05:23 UTC on 8 August, hours after the streamer post, the same tracker published this, verbatim across several lines: "30% of the last 50 accounts Rockstar Games followed on Instagram are musicians." Then: "Most are from the CircoLoco circuit. Rockstar has co-owned CircoLoco Records since 2021." Then a list, which our capture preserved as far as three names: "prospa__ (Prospa)", "halfpint______ (HALFPINT)", "pawsaofficial". That post carried 90 views in the page payload we read. The streamer post from the same account carried 430. The finding with a documented commercial relationship behind it got roughly a fifth of the attention of the one that produced a viral theory. It also connects to the screenshot everyone did read: prospa__ is the single most recent account in the last-ten list, sitting at the top of the very image that went round for its streamers. REPORTED: CircoLoco Records is a joint label founded by Rockstar Games and CircoLoco, announced 24 May 2021. Rockstar's own Newswire carries artist pages for acts on the roster, including one for Prospa and one for PAWSA. Prospa's debut album "Free Your Mind" released on 5 June 2026 as the label's first album, and the title track with Cloonee released on 27 March 2026 and charted in the UK top 10. Now the limits. The musician tweet is a long form note and our capture truncated after three names, so there are almost certainly more artists we did not read. We could not audit Rockstar's following list ourselves because instagram.com returned HTTP 429, and we cannot confirm the tracker's methodology or who runs it. The deflating reading, which we think is the strong one A record label follows its own artists. Rockstar co-owns CircoLoco Records, so Rockstar's Instagram following label acts is ordinary housekeeping that needs no further explanation, and nothing in the data distinguishes routine account maintenance from soundtrack preparation. So we are not making the leap from "follows label artists" to "there will be a CircoLoco radio station in Grand Theft Auto VI". That step is speculation and we have no evidence for it. The narrower point stands: the strand of this story with a documented commercial relationship attached went uncovered, and our own search found no outlet that reported it, while the strand that reached tens of thousands of readers contained a named error. OUR INFERENCE, labelled as such: that four of the ten follows are roughly 17 months old. We could not obtain follow dates. UNVERIFIED: why the xQc substitution occurred, the tracker's methodology and operator, and the full contents of the truncated musicians list. WE DECLINE TO CLAIM: that the musician follows indicate a CircoLoco radio station or any soundtrack decision, that Kent Paul is returning, or that any of the ten accounts has a commercial agreement with Rockstar.
