Is GTA 6 Rated Yet? No, and the Descriptor List Is Empty
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news7 min read
Two independent first-party storefronts agree the rating is formally pending: Xbox shows RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+ with descriptors as an empty array, PlayStation shows ESRB_RP17 with only generic boilerplate. PEGI returns a clean zero-result search at HTTP 200 and 221,583 bytes, with an accuracy trap in its own sidebar that will catch anyone scraping the page. We print every status code for the four boards we could not reach, including the ESRB search that ignored our keyword across five parameter spellings, and explain why absence from a broken default listing proves nothing at all.
No, GTA 6 is not rated yet. Both Sony's and Microsoft's storefronts publish Grand Theft Auto VI as Rating Pending, and the Xbox listing's structured data carries an empty descriptor array, meaning no content descriptors have been assigned by anybody.
That matters for two reasons. It corrects the widely repeated claim that GTA 6 is already ESRB-rated M. And it corrects a second, stranger claim that Australia has classified the game MA 15+, which we assess as unverified and probably false.
Is GTA 6 rated yet?
No. It is formally pending at the ESRB, according to two independent first-party storefronts that agree with each other.
CONFIRMED, and this is the strongest artefact we hold. The Xbox Store's own structured rating object, verbatim:
"contentRating":{"boardName":"ESRB","description":"RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+","disclaimers":["May contain content inappropriate for children. Visit ESRB.org for rating information."],"descriptors":[]}
Look at the last field. "descriptors":[] is an empty array. Not a placeholder, not a generic line, nothing at all.
CONFIRMED at an independent second storefront. The PlayStation Store publishes the rating name ESRB_RP17, the display string "ESRB Rating Pending Mature 17+", and a single descriptor, ESRB_MAY_CONTAIN_CONTENT_INAPPROPRIATE_FOR_CHILDREN, which is the generic boilerplate line a listing shows when there is nothing else to show.

Is GTA 6 rated M by the ESRB?
No, and the claim is false as stated. M is expected. It has not been assigned.
The distinction is not pedantry. "Likely Mature 17+" is what a storefront prints while a submission is outstanding, and it is a publisher's expectation rendered as a placeholder. A rating exists when a board issues a certificate, and neither storefront is showing one.
The empty descriptor array is the part worth dwelling on. Descriptors are the line under the big letter that tells a parent what is actually in the game: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs, and so on. Those are what make a rating useful to somebody deciding whether to buy it for a fourteen year old. Right now, for GTA 6, there are none.
Every image on this page is official Rockstar material. Nothing on this page comes from leaked material, and we did not view any.
Is GTA 6 rated MA 15+ in Australia?
UNVERIFIED, and on the evidence available, probably false. A claim that the Australian Classification Board has classified Grand Theft Auto VI as MA 15+, dated 15 June 2025, circulates widely. We are treating it as a rumour to be corrected rather than as a rating, and here is why.
It is carried by SEO-farm domains rather than by the Board. We could not find it published by the classification authority itself.
At least one outlet running the story frames it in its own headline as leaked ratings whose legitimacy fans dispute. That is the source acknowledging it is not standing behind the claim.
Grand Theft Auto V was rated R 18+ in Australia. An MA 15+ for its sequel would be a downgrade extraordinary enough to be the story on its own, and it would have been reported as one.
The primary database was unreachable when we checked, so nobody working from where we are sitting can confirm or deny it against the source.
We are not printing MA 15+ as a rating anywhere on this page, because we have not seen it in a place that could issue one.
Has PEGI classified GTA 6?
No, and this is the one clean negative we hold from an actual board.
CONFIRMED CLEAN NEGATIVE. PEGI's own search returned HTTP 200 at 221,583 bytes and reads, verbatim: "Search results - Found 0 results from your query - No results found - The title of the game you were searching for cannot be found in this database. This may mean it was not classified by PEGI, but it may also mean it was published on a platform that is not included in this database."
Note PEGI's own caveat in that last sentence, which we are passing on rather than papering over. A zero-result search is consistent with "not yet classified" and also with "classified on a platform this database does not cover".
One accuracy trap worth flagging, because it will catch somebody. "Grand Theft Auto V" does appear on that PEGI results page. It appears inside a "Most Searched Games" sidebar widget, which is a popularity list rendered on every search page regardless of the query. It is not a result. Anybody scraping the page for the string "Grand Theft Auto" will get a hit and will be wrong.
Which ratings boards could we not reach?
Four, and we are printing every status code rather than quietly leaving them out.
BoardWhat we gotWhy
Australian ClassificationHTTP 000, zero bytes, four attemptsHTTP/2 stream INTERNAL_ERROR, then a 45,000 ms timeout when forced to HTTP/1.1
Korean GRAChomepage HTTP 200, search path HTTP 400 at 910 bytes, then HTTP 000the search is an ASP.NET postback needing viewstate tokens and Korean-language title matching
Brazilian ClassInd via gov.brHTTP 404, 26 bytesthe portal path has moved
ESRB's own searchHTTP 200, 30,772 bytes, but the keyword was ignoredthe admin-ajax endpoint returned the same default latest-ratings list across five parameter spellings
The ESRB failure needs one extra sentence of explanation, because it is the one that could be misread. We could not execute a keyword search against the ESRB at all. The endpoint answered, took our query, and returned the same unfiltered default list every time. GTA VI's absence from a default listing is not evidence of absence. That is why this article rests on the two storefront rating fields, which are structured, machine-readable, published by the platform holders themselves, and agree with each other.
Should a pending rating this close to release worry anyone?
No. A Rating Pending marker roughly twelve weeks out from a 19 November release is ordinary. Boards rate near-final builds, publishers submit late in production by design, and marketing materials carry Rating Pending until a certificate is issued, which is why every trailer has shown it.
The genuinely interesting detail is the empty descriptor array rather than the pending status itself. Descriptors are the part of a rating that carries actual information about content, and there are none published for the biggest entertainment release of the year with three months to go. When they appear, they will tell you considerably more about the game than the letter next to them.
What is and is not established
Confirmed: the Xbox Store publishes boardName ESRB, description "RATING PENDING LIKELY MATURE 17+", and an empty descriptors array. Quoted verbatim above.
Confirmed at an independent second storefront: the PlayStation Store publishes ESRB_RP17, the display string "ESRB Rating Pending Mature 17+", and only the generic descriptor ESRB_MAY_CONTAIN_CONTENT_INAPPROPRIATE_FOR_CHILDREN.
Corrected: "GTA 6 is already ESRB-rated M" is false as stated. M is expected, not assigned. Both storefronts show a pending rating.
Unverified and likely false: that Australia has classified GTA 6 as MA 15+, dated 15 June 2025. It is carried by SEO-farm domains rather than the Board, at least one outlet frames it as disputed leaked ratings, GTA V was rated R 18+ so a downgrade would itself be the story, and the primary database was unreachable when we checked.
Confirmed clean negative: PEGI's search returns zero results for Grand Theft Auto VI, HTTP 200 at 221,583 bytes, quoted verbatim above, including PEGI's own caveat about platform coverage.
Accuracy note: "Grand Theft Auto V" appears on that PEGI page only inside a Most Searched Games sidebar widget. It is not a search result.
Not obtained: the Australian Classification database (HTTP 000 across four attempts, stream INTERNAL_ERROR, 45,000 ms timeout), Korean GRAC (search path HTTP 400 at 910 bytes then HTTP 000), Brazilian ClassInd via gov.br (HTTP 404, 26 bytes), and a working ESRB keyword search (HTTP 200 at 30,772 bytes with the keyword ignored across five parameter spellings).
Explicitly not claimed: that GTA 6 has no ESRB certificate on file anywhere. Absence from a broken default listing proves nothing. We assert only what the two storefronts publish.
Context, not alarm: Rating Pending is normal months before release. The empty descriptor list is the part worth watching, because descriptors are what tell parents what is actually in the game.
We check both storefront rating objects regularly and will report the moment a certificate and its descriptors appear, on our news page. If you are planning where you will play once 19 November arrives, our servers list is the place to start.
