How Long Is the GTA 6 Extended Look? We Measured Rockstar's Own 4K File
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news11 min read
Nobody else has these numbers and every one of them is reproducible with curl. A HEAD request returned HTTP 200 and a tail range request returned HTTP 206 at 3,000,000 bytes, which is enough to read the whole index of a 14 GB file. Inside it: an exact runtime, an exact frame rate, a leftover production timecode track and an FFmpeg muxer tag. We also set out why published runtimes range from 26 minutes to just over 30, why Rockstar's own keyword field says Trailer 3 while every public surface says An Extended Look, and why a third-party restream was outranking Rockstar's upload in YouTube search when we checked.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look runs for exactly 1,608.067 seconds. That is 26 minutes and 48.07 seconds. It is not a stopwatch reading and it is not a rounded figure taken off a player bar. It is the number Rockstar wrote into the movie header of the 4K master it published on its own website, and we read it out of the file itself.
We pulled that file, parsed its container, and measured everything else in it as well: 48,242 frames at exactly 30.000 frames per second, 3840 by 2160, H.264 High Profile Level 5.2, stereo audio with no surround track, a leftover production timecode track, and 14,115,273,308 bytes of data. Every number below is reproducible by any reader with curl and twenty minutes. That matters, because several large outlets published a runtime for this video that is wrong by as much as three and a half minutes.
How long is the GTA 6 Extended Look?
26 minutes and 48 seconds, and change.
CONFIRMED, self-fetched. The mvhd atom inside Rockstar's published MP4 carries a timescale of 1000 and a duration of 1608067. Divide one by the other and you get 1,608.067 seconds, which is 26 minutes 48.07 seconds. Rockstar's own video record on the Grand Theft Auto VI site independently gives the duration as "26:48" against the internal id rk721912. YouTube's player configuration for the same upload reports lengthSeconds of 1608. Three separate Rockstar-controlled surfaces agree, and our own measurement of the container matches all three.
How did we measure Rockstar's own file?
By reading the end of it and nothing else.
CONFIRMED, with times and status codes. The media page at rockstargames.com/VI/media/videos answered HTTP 200 at 622,461 bytes at 03:06:45Z on 28 August and carries a direct download link to an MP4. A HEAD request against that MP4 at 03:07:02Z returned HTTP 200 with a content-length of 14,115,273,308 bytes. A byte-range request against the tail of the file at 03:07:20Z returned HTTP 206 at 3,000,000 bytes.
That last request is the whole trick. In this file the moov atom, which is the index describing every track, sits at the end rather than the front. Asking for the final three megabytes gets you the complete description of a 14 gigabyte file without downloading 14 gigabytes of it. Everything in the table below came out of those three megabytes.
Every image on this page is official Rockstar material. Nothing on this page comes from leaked material, and we did not view any.
What is actually inside the 4K master?
CONFIRMED, every row parsed from the container by us.

The frame rate deserves a sentence of its own, because it is the cleanest number in the file. A timescale of 15360 with a constant per-sample delta of 512 gives 15360 divided by 512, which is 30 exactly. Not 29.97, not 30.03, not a variable rate averaging out to something near 30. Every single one of the 48,242 frames occupies the same interval.
What do those choices tell you?
This section is our analysis and we are labelling it as ours. Nothing here is a Rockstar statement.
Two of them point the same way. H.264 at 4K is the expensive option and it is also the one that plays on essentially everything ever built, including old smart TVs and set-top boxes that never got a modern decoder. Stereo-only audio, from a studio whose sound design is one of its signatures, points the same direction. Rockstar bought maximum compatibility and paid for it in bandwidth, roughly 70.2 Mbps sustained across 26 minutes, multiplied by everybody who pulled the file on launch night.
The third is the one nobody was meant to see. The tmcd track is a QuickTime timecode track used inside editing suites to keep sources in sync, the muxer tag is FFmpeg's libavformat and the handler strings are the Apple defaults. That is an editorial-workflow fingerprint left in a shipped consumer asset. It harms nothing, and it is the sort of residue that a formal packaging pipeline strips and an upload of the edit master does not.
Does a 30fps video mean GTA 6 runs at 30fps?
No, and we want to be extremely clear about this because the number is about to be quoted out of context.
What we measured is the delivery framerate of a video file. A studio can capture at any rate and deliver at another, and 30fps is a completely ordinary delivery target for a marketing master intended to play on everything. Our measurement is consistent with reporting that consoles are currently running the game at 30fps, and it is corroboration of that reporting rather than proof of it. It does not establish what the shipping game does on 19 November, and we do not claim it does. We have a separate piece today on where the 30fps reporting came from and how carefully it was originally worded.
Why does the press disagree about how long it is?
Because almost nobody measured it. CONFIRMED, all of these were fetched.

Read that table from the bottom. A Reddit thread of people timing the video in the Netflix app landed nearer the real figure than two professional outlets did, and it did so because somebody actually watched a clock. The 30 minute figures look like a presentation slot being mistaken for a runtime. Netflix's own card says 27 minutes and Rockstar's own site says 26:48, so neither number was hard to find.
We are not printing this to be smug about it. We are printing it because "how long is it" is the single most searched question about this video, and the answer is sitting in a header that anyone can read.
Did Rockstar call it Trailer 3?
Rockstar's own metadata does. Rockstar's own public communication does not, and the difference matters.
CONFIRMED. The YouTube keyword field on the upload, exposed as itemprop="keywords" and matching the og:video:tag values, reads verbatim:
Grand Theft Auto VI,Grand Theft Auto 6,GTAVI,GTA 6,An Extended Look,Rockstar Games,Netflix,PlayStation 5,PS5,XBOX Series X|S,XBOX,Jason,Lucia,Trailer 3,GTA 6 Trailer 3
Two of those fifteen keywords are "Trailer 3" and "GTA 6 Trailer 3". Meanwhile the title, the description, the Newswire post, the Netflix listing and every other public-facing surface call it An Extended Look, and the "Watch more" rail on rockstargames.com/VI still carries Trailer 1 (internal id rkoCtr1r) and Trailer 2 (cpys7u21) as separate numbered entries alongside this one.
Label this carefully. That keyword list is metadata Rockstar authored and uploaded. It is not a Rockstar statement calling the video Trailer 3, and treating a search-optimisation field as an announcement would be a mistake. Our reading of why it is there is inference and nothing stronger: millions of people were going to type "GTA 6 Trailer 3" into a search box that night whatever the thing was called. The keyword field is where you put the name your audience uses. The title is where you put the name you chose.
What did the numbers look like on launch night?
CONFIRMED, our own timestamped polls of the public counters. These are readings, not estimates, and each one carries the moment we took it.
UTCViewsLikes
03:00:08Z1,231,539350,763
03:03:28Z1,249,721355,979
03:09:15Z1,290,577364,804
03:11:07Z1,296,005367,495
03:11:48Z1,304,682368,465
Between the first two readings the counter moved 18,182 views in 200 seconds. That is about 5,455 views per minute, or roughly 91 every second, sustained across more than three minutes of wall clock, roughly two hours after the free release went live.
One figure we are flagging without explaining. Likes are running at about 28 per cent of views. That is a remarkable ratio by the standards of anything on the platform, where low single digits is normal. We are not going to tell you what it means, because we cannot demonstrate a cause. The obvious romantic reading is that the audience is unusually engaged. The obvious unromantic reading is that YouTube's view counting lags its like counting during a traffic spike, so the denominator is stale and the ratio is an artefact of the pipeline rather than a fact about people. Both are consistent with the numbers above, and we have no way to separate them from outside.
Where should you actually watch it?
CONFIRMED, and this is the practical warning in this piece. When our researcher searched YouTube for the video, the top result was not Rockstar's upload. It was a third-party restream sitting on an unrelated channel, which we identified through the oEmbed endpoint. We are not naming the channel and we are not printing the video id, because doing so would send traffic to it.
The safe routes are the official Rockstar Games channel, which carries 13.5 million subscribers, and rockstargames.com/VI, which hosts the video and the 4K download directly. Use either rather than trusting whatever a search box hands you first. A restream can be re-encoded, cropped, overlaid with a commentator's face, or quietly monetised by somebody who had nothing to do with making it.
For completeness, the upload itself is CONFIRMED as public rather than private or unlisted, age restricted to 18+ (og:restrictions:age is 18+ and isFamilyFriendly is false), and available worldwide, with the regionsAllowed list global and no geoblocks. It was published at 2026-08-27T18:00:48 Pacific, which is 2026-08-28T01:00:48 UTC, 48 seconds after the 9 p.m. ET target.
The description reads, verbatim:
Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at the next Grand Theft Auto showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet. Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PlayStation 5. Coming November 19.
What is and is not established
Confirmed, self-fetched, HTTP 200 at 622,461 bytes at 03:06:45Z: rockstargames.com/VI/media/videos links a direct MP4 download of the Extended Look.
Confirmed, HEAD HTTP 200 at 03:07:02Z and a tail range request HTTP 206 at 3,000,000 bytes at 03:07:20Z: the file is 14,115,273,308 bytes and its moov atom sits at the end, so the container can be parsed without downloading it in full.
Confirmed, parsed by us: duration 1,608.067 seconds from mvhd at timescale 1000 and duration 1608067, which is 26 minutes 48.07 seconds.
Confirmed, parsed by us: 48,242 frames at exactly 30.000 fps, from an stts delta of 512 at timescale 15360.
Confirmed, parsed by us: 3840 by 2160 from tkhd, H.264 High Profile Level 5.2 from avcC 01 64 00 34, AAC stereo at 48 kHz in language eng with no surround track, and a third tmcd timecode track left in the shipped file.
Confirmed: the muxer tag is Lavf62.12.100, the handlers are named Apple Video Media Handler and Apple Sound Media Handler, last-modified is Fri, 28 Aug 2026 01:05:09 GMT and the origin server is AkamaiNetStorage.
Our analysis, not fact: that H.264 at roughly 70.2 Mbps with stereo-only audio is a compatibility-first delivery choice bought at a large bandwidth cost, and that the timecode track and FFmpeg muxer tag are an editorial-workflow fingerprint.
Explicitly not claimed: that the shipping game runs at 30fps. We measured a video file. The delivery framerate of a marketing master is not the frame rate of a game, and we have a separate piece on where the 30fps reporting came from.
Confirmed: YouTube reports lengthSeconds 1608, matching our measurement, on an upload published 2026-08-28T01:00:48 UTC, 48 seconds after the advertised 9 p.m. ET target, on a channel with 13.5 million subscribers, age restricted 18+, public, and with a global regionsAllowed list carrying no geoblocks.
Confirmed: runtime figures published elsewhere range from 26 minutes to just over 30 minutes. Netflix says 0h 27m, Variety says 27 minutes, Kotaku says 26 minutes in one piece and nearly 30 in another, and VGC says just over 30 minutes, which overshoots by more than three minutes.
Confirmed as metadata, not as a statement: Rockstar's own YouTube keyword field contains "Trailer 3" and "GTA 6 Trailer 3" while every public-facing surface calls the video An Extended Look. Why it is there is our inference and Rockstar has said nothing about it.
Confirmed, our own timestamped readings: five view and like samples between 03:00:08Z and 03:11:48Z, showing 18,182 views in 200 seconds between the first two, about 91 per second.
Flagged without a cause: likes running at roughly 28 per cent of views. We do not assert why. Counter lag during a spike is at least as plausible as anything about the audience.
Confirmed, and printed as a warning: a third-party restream on an unrelated channel was outranking Rockstar's own upload in YouTube search when we checked. We name neither the channel nor the video id, and we tell readers to use the official channel or rockstargames.com/VI instead.
Every figure above can be reproduced from Rockstar's own public file, and we would rather you checked than took our word for it. More of this sort of work goes up on our news page, and if you want somewhere to be until 19 November, our servers list is the place to start.
