The GTA 6 Box Will Not Contain a Disc
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news7 min read
The page at store.rockstargames.com was fetched at 03:09:41 UTC on 7 September 2026, HTTP 200, 971,702 bytes, and carries the sentence "Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box." twice over. The machine-readable preloadDate field on all three digital objects reads 1794470400000 milliseconds, which converts to 2026-11-12T08:00:00Z, and Sony independently lists "7-Day Pre-load" as a paid edition feature on both the Standard and Ultimate objects on a 450,942 byte product page. Exactly two objects carry isPhysical true, both are Ultimate Edition, and their stockAvailable values read -1 and 0 with purchasable true and maxQuantity 4. We say what that field reads and not what it means. Neither platform holder has published a real download or install size for this game.
If you have pre-ordered a boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto VI, the box will not contain the game. Rockstar's own storefront says so twice on the same page, in plain sentences, with no asterisk beyond a stock caveat.
CONFIRMED. The page at store.rockstargames.com/game/buy-gta-vi was fetched at 03:09:41 UTC on 7 September 2026, HTTP 200, 971,702 bytes with redirects followed, and 971,265 bytes of decoded body. The following strings are present in the server-rendered HTML, verbatim:
Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box. *While supplies last, further details below .
And again, further down the same page, in the offer detail:
The physical version of GTAVI will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.
The odd spacing before the full stop in the first string is in the original and we have quoted it as served.
We have already covered the date. This is about the box
The same page carries the string "Pre-load begins November 12, 2026", and we already reported that when it appeared, at our piece on the pre-load date and the store SKU records. Treat the date as settled and read on for the part that has not been reported: what is physically inside the box you are paying for.
Two first-party sources agree on the window. Rockstar's own store objects carry a machine-readable preloadDate field, and all three digital objects on the page hold the same value, 1794470400000 milliseconds since the Unix epoch. Converted, that is 2026-11-12T08:00:00Z. The conversion is our researcher's own arithmetic on the raw field value, and the raw value is printed above so you can redo it.
Sony describes the same thing from the other side. The PlayStation Store product page for EP1004-PPSA01547_00-GTAVISTANDARD001, HTTP 200, 450,942 bytes, fetched at 03:03:12 UTC and reproduced identically at 03:03:45 UTC, embeds two ProductEdition objects. Both list "7-Day Pre-load" as an edition feature: the Ultimate Edition object, type PREMIUM, features "Grand Theft Auto VI", "Ultimate Edition Upgrade", "Vintage Vice City Pack", "One Month of GTA+" and "7-Day Pre-load", and the Standard Edition object, type STANDARD, carries the same list minus the upgrade. Seven days before 19 November is 12 November. Rockstar's store copy and Sony's edition metadata were written by different companies and they line up.
What is actually in the box
A download code, and shipping. The store page states an "Estimated shipping date: November 12, 2026", which is the same day pre-load opens rather than the release date, and the physical product object carries a preorderDate of 1780286400000, or 2026-06-01T04:00:00Z, which is three weeks earlier than the 25 June date the digital objects carry.
So the practical shape of it: the code ships to arrive for 12 November, you redeem it, you download roughly a week ahead of the 19 November launch, and the plastic in the box is packaging. If you buy a boxed copy because you want something that works without a broadband connection, this is the sentence to read twice.
Every image on this page is an official Rockstar press screenshot. Nobody outside Rockstar has played this game, and every impression of it in circulation is an impression of footage.
Two physical objects on the page, both Ultimate, and one field reading zero
Here the reporting gets narrower, deliberately. The decoded page body contains exactly two objects with "isPhysical":true. The regular expression "isPhysical":true returns exactly two matches. Both objects carry "gameNames":{"en-US":"Grand Theft Auto VI Ultimate Edition"}, and their Contentful product identifiers are 5jhzjpoqbC7wKEYTC0YZU6 and 7vd811uTmSX8EDIUYS5ewE.
Their stockAvailable values are -1 and 0. On the same objects, purchasable is true and maxQuantity is 4. All three digital objects on the page carry stockAvailable of -1.
We are telling you what the field reads. We are not telling you what it means. Our researcher's reading, which he labelled as his own inference rather than as fact, is that on this storefront -1 conventionally denotes unlimited or untracked and 0 denotes none left. He looked for first-party documentation of that convention and did not find any. So the checkable fact is the field value, and the interpretation is a guess with an honest label on it. A zero in a store object is not a statement from Rockstar that the physical Ultimate Edition is sold out, and we are not going to write that it is.
We are also not going to write that any of this represents a change in Rockstar policy. Nothing in our research establishes what the previous state of that store page was, and an assertion about a change requires a before as well as an after.
One more field oddity, reported and not explained
The releaseDate values on the two edition objects do not match. The Standard object reads 1795075200000, or 2026-11-19T08:00:00Z. The Ultimate object reads 1795064400000, or 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z. The difference is exactly 10,800,000 milliseconds, which is three hours.
We do not know why. Our researcher recorded both values and declined to guess, and so do we. Sony's own page carries a single releaseDate of 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z, and Microsoft's catalogue carries an OriginalReleaseDate of 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z for the United States, so the outlier is the Standard object on Rockstar's own store.
And nobody has published a download size
This matters more than usual for a game that now ships as a code. CONFIRMED as a firm negative. On the xbox.com consumer pages, HTTP 200 at 474,934 bytes for the Standard listing and 478,512 bytes for the Ultimate, both fetched at 03:04:12 UTC, a regular expression for any figure followed by GB returns zero matches, "install size" returns zero matches, and "Approximate size" returns zero matches. The string "GB" does not occur once on either page.
The one number embedded in the underlying catalogue is a placeholder and its disqualifier sits in the same record: MaxDownloadSizeInBytes of 344,731,648 alongside MaxInstallSizeInBytes of 0 and a Version string of "0", on a package whose URI points at an ingestion bin. That is not a shippable build and it is not the size of Grand Theft Auto VI. Sony publishes nothing either: the regular expressions fileSize and "File Size" both return zero matches across the 450,942 byte PlayStation product page. As of 03:11 UTC on 7 September 2026, neither platform holder has published a real download or install size for this game.
What is and is not established
CONFIRMED, from Rockstar's own store page at 03:09:41 UTC on 7 September, HTTP 200, 971,702 bytes: the physical version contains a download code and no disc, stated twice in the server-rendered HTML in the words quoted above.
CONFIRMED, from the same page: "Pre-load begins November 12, 2026", an estimated shipping date of 12 November 2026, and a preloadDate field of 1794470400000 on all three digital objects, which converts to 2026-11-12T08:00:00Z by our own arithmetic.
CONFIRMED, from Sony's product page at 03:03:12 UTC, HTTP 200, 450,942 bytes, reproduced at 03:03:45 UTC: "7-Day Pre-load" is listed as an edition feature on both the Standard and the Ultimate objects.
CONFIRMED as field readings only: exactly two objects on the store page carry isPhysical true, both are Ultimate Edition, and their stockAvailable values are -1 and 0, with purchasable true and maxQuantity 4.
Explicitly not claimed: that a stockAvailable of 0 means the physical Ultimate Edition is sold out. That reading is our researcher's labelled inference and he found no first-party documentation of the convention.
Explicitly not claimed: that any of this is a change in Rockstar's approach to physical releases. No source in this sweep establishes a prior state.
CONFIRMED as a firm negative: no download or install size for Grand Theft Auto VI is published by either platform holder as of 03:11 UTC on 7 September 2026, and the 344,731,648 byte catalogue value sits on a package with a zero install size and a zero version string.
Method limits printed as limits: newswire.rockstargames.com could not be reached at all from our environment, the fetch failing at the proxy with a 502 CONNECT tunnel error at 02:59:52 UTC and recorded as status 000 and zero bytes; the Rockstar Newswire index and the site homepage are JavaScript shells of 4,123 and 3,536 bytes with empty bodies, so we cannot enumerate Newswire posts and rely on the five teasers Rockstar server-renders onto its own VI page; and rockstargames.com/robots.txt, HTTP 200 and 311 bytes at 03:08:00 UTC, disallows ClaudeBot along with seven other crawlers, which readers should know is the site's stated preference.
Our running ledger of what is established about this game, as against what is circulating, is on the wiki, and the pre-order bonus deadlines that go with all of this are in our piece on the two claim windows. If you want the price comparison across editions instead, we did that at 79.99 and 99.99 and the twenty dollar upgrade. The servers list and the leaderboards are open for the next 73 days.
