GTA 6 Has No Disc in the Box, and Circana Just Lost Xbox

by 6Charts Team Category: news 6 min read

Two separate primary sources, one week. Rockstar Support, verbatim: a disc will not be included in the box. Circana's own analyst on Bluesky, verbatim: Microsoft is no longer a digital panel participating publisher. Kotaku reports EA has also left. We could not confirm whether Take-Two participates in the panel, so we make no claim about how well GTA 6 will be counted, only that Xbox first-party digital is dark and third-party Xbox estimates are degraded. Circana issues no press release for the monthly US report; the analyst's social account is the primary.

The physical edition of GTA 6 does not contain a disc. Rockstar's own support site says so in one flat sentence: the box holds a download code and nothing else. That landed in the same week that Circana, the firm whose numbers the US games industry runs on, quietly lost Microsoft from its digital sales panel, so the shift away from discs is now happening with less public data behind it than at any point in the last decade. What is actually in the GTA 6 box? CONFIRMED, primary source, retrieved 21 August 2026. Rockstar Games Customer Support, on its Grand Theft Auto VI platform editions and versions article, HTTP 200. Verbatim: "The physical version of GTAVI will contain a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box." The same page states that the boxed edition is available from 12 November 2026, a week ahead of the game itself, and that the code can be redeemed then to begin a pre-load. It also sets out the code rules, which differ by platform. PS5 codes are region-locked to the territory they were bought in. For Xbox, the page says plainly: "Codes purchased are not region-locked." If you were buying physical to lend the game to a friend, to sell it on, or to have something that still works when a storefront eventually goes dark, none of that survives a download code. The box is a delivery mechanism for a string of characters. Circana has lost Xbox from its digital panel CONFIRMED, primary source. Mat Piscatella is Circana's own games industry analyst. Asked directly on Bluesky, "Mat is Xbox no longer part of the digital panel?", he replied at 13:39 UTC on 20 August 2026. We retrieved the thread through the AT Protocol getPostThread endpoint, HTTP 200. Verbatim: "Microsoft is no longer a digital panel participating publisher." Circana's digital panel is the arrangement under which publishers hand over their own digital sales figures so the firm can report a US market total rather than a physical-only fragment. A publisher that leaves stops feeding the number. REPORTED (Kotaku, Rebekah Valentine, 20 August 2026). Kotaku reports that EA has also dropped panel membership, and sets out why the Microsoft departure is the more damaging of the two. Verbatim from that piece: "Xbox dropping out is a huge problem in particular. It not only eliminates transparency on Xbox first-party digital games in the U.S., ... but also further obscures the sales of any other publishers." Push Square covered the same development on the same day. What this does and does not mean for GTA 6 sales numbers Be careful here, because the obvious conclusion is one we cannot support. We could not confirm whether Take-Two participates in Circana's digital panel at all, and we are not going to write that Circana cannot count GTA 6 on Xbox when we have not established the premise. What we can say precisely is this. Xbox first-party digital sales in the US are now dark. Any third-party Xbox estimate built on a panel that no longer includes the platform holder is degraded, and Kotaku's point about the knock-on effect on other publishers is the reason why. When you read a US sales figure for any game on Xbox this autumn, the coverage of the underlying panel is now materially worse than it was in July. All images on this page are official Rockstar press screenshots. The GTA 6 box goes on sale 12 November 2026 with a download code inside it. The monthly US report has no press release behind it CONFIRMED NEGATIVE. circana.com/newsroom/press-releases/ returns HTTP 404. Circana does not issue a press release for its monthly US games report. The analyst's Bluesky thread is the primary source, which is worth stating plainly, because it means the entire public record of the US games market now arrives through one person's social media account and can be revised, deleted or simply not posted. Piscatella himself has been blunt about the direction of travel. On 20 August, verbatim, including his own typo: "You don't have to care about sales data to be frustated [sic] that fewer and fewer major gaming companies are being transparent with theirs." Physical was already collapsing on Xbox CONFIRMED, same analyst, 20 August 2026. Verbatim: "Only a little over 4 percent of all new physical games sold in the U.S. this year have been on Xbox" Set that beside a ten-year view he published on 7 August, also verbatim: "PS+ revenue has increased by 303% over that period. Digital games and add on sales (MTX) have increased by 360%. Physical game sales revenue is down 33%." A discless GTA 6 box is what that decade looks like at the point of sale. Rockstar is still printing a box, still shipping it to shelves a week early, and putting a code in it. Players have not moved as fast as publishers CONFIRMED, Circana Q2 Future of Video Games Consumer Survey, as published by Piscatella on 18 August 2026, verbatim: "From Circana's Q2 Future of Video Games Consumer Survey: 26% of US console players indicate they buy mostly physical games (when available) with 39% buying a balanced mix between physical and digital. Were digital games priced $10 below their physical counterparts, 59% would buy more digital." His methodology note matters and we are printing it in full, verbatim: "This survey was fielded in late April and early May (before Sony's announcement to cease physical production for new games in January 2028). n = 2.6k US active video game players over the age of 13, weighted based on representative distribution of platform use and investment." Sixty-five percent of US console players say they buy mostly physical or a balanced mix. That is the constituency being handed a box with a code in it. The same survey says most of them would move if digital were ten dollars cheaper, and GTA 6's digital and physical standard editions are both US$79.99. Why any of this matters for GTA 6 specifically CONFIRMED, Piscatella, 7 August 2026, verbatim: "Yes, Grand Theft Auto V ranks 1st in both full game unit and dollar sales in the US over the past decade, while Red Dead Redemption II ranks 3rd in each. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) is 2nd in $ over this period, while Minecraft is 2nd in Units. Source: Circana Retail Tracking Service" The best-selling game of the last ten years in the United States is the direct predecessor of the one launching in November, and the measurement apparatus that established that fact has less coverage now than it did when it measured it. What we still do not know Whether Take-Two participates in Circana's digital panel. We could not confirm it either way, so we make no claim about how well GTA 6 will be counted. When Microsoft left the panel, or why. Piscatella stated the fact and not the timing or the reason. Whether other publishers follow. Kotaku reports EA has also gone; we have no basis for predicting the next one. Whether the discless box changes anything about pricing, returns or resale at retail. Rockstar's support page describes the contents and does not address any of that. What Rockstar or Take-Two think of any of it. Neither has commented on the panel, and the support page is a help article rather than a statement. We will keep reading the primary sources directly rather than the aggregators, and post what the next monthly report does or does not contain, on our news page.
