Rockstar's $399.99 GTA 6 Box Does Not Contain the Game
by 6Charts TeamCategory: news9 min read
This desk's editor verified every spine first hand. The store page answered HTTP 200 at 1,024,232 bytes at 2026-09-24T20:07:53Z, carrying the eleven item contents list, the measurements 19 in x 13.5 in x 12.5 in, the safety text and the sold separately note. The newswire post answered HTTP 200 at 6,038 bytes with its og:title and og:description quoted verbatim here. The announcement hero on Rockstar's Akamai host answered HTTP/2 200 with content-length 2,852,369 and last-modified Thu, 24 Sep 2026 15:00:45 GMT, and its ETag unix field 1790262045 converts to the same second by this desk's own arithmetic. The 3,206.25 cubic inch volume, the 4.0003 and 5.0005 price ratios, the $499.98 combined figure, the epoch conversions and the 56 day countdown are all this desk's own arithmetic. The article also prints the control test that undermines single timestamp dating: one content-hashed Rockstar asset URL served two different Last-Modified values and two different ETags across eight consecutive HEADs while six GETs returned byte-identical 201,259 byte bodies, so the claim here rests on 14-of-14 consistency across 11 files plus the post plus the agreeing ETag field. The newswire body is a JavaScript shell nobody here read, preorderDate is not treated as a public pre-order date, no GBP price is printed and no map claim is made.
Rockstar Games put a $399.99 Grand Theft Auto VI collectible on sale on 24 September 2026. It is called Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State - Vice City Collection, it holds eleven items, and the game is not one of them. Rockstar's own product page says so in a single line under the contents list.
This desk fetched the store page, the newswire post and the announcement hero image directly, read the contents list and the safety text off the served HTML, and converted the server timestamps by hand. Then it ran a control test on Rockstar's own servers to establish how much a timestamp on that host is worth. That control test is printed here too, in its own section, because it is the reason the dating below rests on fourteen agreeing observations rather than on one header.
The announcement, as Rockstar published it
CONFIRMED. The newswire post lives at rockstargames.com/newswire/article/9k2a49ook82o57/pre-order-the-goodtime-state-vice-city-collection-now-while-supplies-l and answered HTTP 200 at 6,038 bytes when this desk's editor re-fetched it. Its og:title reads, verbatim:
Pre-Order The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection Now While Supplies Last - Rockstar Games
Its og:description reads, verbatim:
Introducing Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, a premium Grand Theft Auto VI collectible set featuring all the essentials for a good time, inspired by Leonida’s hit TV show, Macca the Gator.
The store page itself, at store.rockstargames.com/merchandise/gtavi-goodtime-state-vice-city-collection, answered HTTP 200 at 1,024,232 bytes when the editor re-read it at 2026-09-24T20:07:53Z. Its embedded product record carries "itemSkuId":"360657-US", "originalPrice":399.99, "isPhysical":true, "productType":"collectible", "releaseDate":1795064400000 and "preorderDate":1788235200000. Converting those two epoch fields is this desk's own arithmetic: 1795064400000 milliseconds is 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z, and 1788235200000 milliseconds is 2026-09-01T04:00:00Z.
What is in the box
CONFIRMED. The page lists eleven items under the heading "Collection includes:". This is the list verbatim and in order.
Item
Macca the Gator Figure
Oakley® Frogskins™ Sunglasses
Leonida Keys Crossbody Bag
New Era® 9FORTY Snapback Hat
Macca the Gator Magnetic Mirror
Chunkee the Manatee Shot Glass
Vice City Collectible Swizzle Spoon
Vice City Razor Blade Keychain
Leonida Keys Enamel Pin Set in Metal Tin
Leonida Keys Sticker Pack in Stash Bag
Double-Sided Souvenir Poster with Map of Leonida
The page gives the box measurements as 19 in x 13.5 in x 12.5 in. Multiplying those out gives 3,206.25 cubic inches, which is this desk's own arithmetic and not a figure Rockstar prints. The poster is separately described as 36 in x 26 in on poster paper.
Two item blurbs are worth reading in Rockstar's own words, because they set the register of the whole product. On the figure:
Stash your valuables in the twist-open base of this figurine of Macca enjoying a smoke and a flamingo blood martini.
And on the sunglasses:
Block out the Leonida sun with a pair of matte black Oakley® Frogskins™ sunglasses, featuring Prizm Sapphire lenses and a Vice City pink GTAVI logo.
The safety text under those is less playful, and it is worth printing because the schema block on the same page declares a minimum audience age of zero:
Warning: Choking hazard. Contains small parts and sharp points or edges. Not for children under 3. Adult collectibles. Not a toy. Ages 18+. Fragile.
The line that decides whether this is worth $399.99
CONFIRMED. Under the contents list, the page carries this, verbatim:
Note: Grand Theft Auto VI game sold separately.
So a buyer paying $399.99 still needs to buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI. Set against the game's own prices, that figure is 4.0003 times the $99.99 Ultimate Edition and 5.0005 times the $79.99 Standard Edition, and a box plus an Ultimate Edition comes to $499.98. Those three figures are this desk's own arithmetic on Rockstar's published prices.
The box is also carved out of the store's shipping and checkout conveniences. The product record sets "excludedFromFreeShipping":true and "excludedFromGuestCheckout":true, and the page states plainly: "This item is not eligible for free shipping." Readers who have followed this desk's work on the game's own physical edition, where the box turned out to hold a download code rather than a disc, will recognise the pattern of reading the small print before the marketing.
How this desk dated the announcement
CONFIRMED. The hero image attached to the newswire post sits on Rockstar's Akamai host at media-rockstargames-com.akamaized.net/tina-uploads/posts/9k2a49ook82o57/cbdf4fc342bfca94c789a887244c3b70283047ae.jpg. The editor re-checked it at 2026-09-24T20:11:24Z: HTTP/2 200, content-length: 2852369, last-modified: Thu, 24 Sep 2026 15:00:45 GMT, etag: "f47c6bc5b8f2c59b7f8abe72680cfdf4:1790262045.058354".
That ETag carries its own unix timestamp in its second field. Converting 1790262045 by hand gives 2026-09-24T15:00:45Z, which matches the Last-Modified header to the second. That conversion is this desk's own arithmetic. Two independent fields on Rockstar's own content delivery network agree, which is what carries the claim rather than either field alone.
The same technique was calibrated against two posts whose dates are already public. The hero for "An Extended Look" carries an ETag unix field of 1787857309, which converts to 27 August 2026 at 19:01:49Z and matches its own Last-Modified. The hero for the album announcement carries 1789646748, which converts to 17 September 2026 at 12:05:48Z and likewise matches. Both are dates this site has already covered, and both come out right.
Separately, the eleven product images backing the new section on rockstargames.com/VI returned last-modified: Thu, 24 Sep 2026 14:20:13 GMT on 14 out of 14 requests each, while control assets on the same host in the same sweep returned mixed stamps.
The caveat, and why it is printed rather than buried
One Rockstar asset URL will hand you two different answers about when it changed. This desk tested it on purpose.
CONFIRMED. The target was rockstargames.com/VI/_next/static/media/logo_vi.02gnpy7k4ozcz.png, a content-hashed static asset whose bytes cannot change without its filename changing. Eight consecutive HEAD requests produced two alternating answers: last-modified: Mon, 31 Aug 2026 14:28:23 GMT with etag: W/"3122b-1a05838a758" on five of eight, and last-modified: Thu, 24 Sep 2026 14:20:13 GMT with etag: W/"3122b-1a0d3c9cd48" on three of eight. Six full GET requests of the same URL then returned 201,259 bytes every time, with the same sha256 prefix on every body. Identical bytes, two dates, two ETags.
The hex field 3122b in that weak ETag is 201,259, exactly the observed content length, which means the differing second field is a file modification time rather than a content difference. That identification is this desk's own arithmetic.
The consequence is blunt, and it applies to a great deal of published Grand Theft Auto VI coverage. A lone 24 September stamp on that host proves that a file is present in the newest build generation. It does not by itself prove that anything changed on 24 September. Anyone dating a Rockstar site change from a single request is dating a coin flip.
That is why the dating above is not built on one header. It rests on three separate things agreeing: 14-of-14 consistency across the eleven collection images, the newswire post itself, and the hero image ETag's own unix field matching its Last-Modified to the second. This desk keeps a running record of exactly this class of error in its metadata traps piece, and this is the fifth trap in that family.
What this desk could not check
The newswire article body is a JavaScript shell. Nobody here read it, and only the head metadata is quoted above. Four candidate feed endpoints returned 404. The rockstargames.com robots.txt file disallows this agent by name, so fetching was kept to targeted verification of specific URLs rather than any crawl.
preorderDate is a backend field name. This desk cannot prove it means that public pre-orders opened on 1 September, and does not assert it. It may be a configuration default.
The store is geo-bound and every request here resolved to the United States, so the GBP figure circulating in secondhand coverage was never observed on a live storefront and is not printed here. Nobody attempted checkout, so whether an order completes today is untested.
The map poster render shows the poster's illustrated front with the map side angled behind it and largely hidden. No legible Leonida geography is exposed, so this desk does not say Rockstar published the map.
Where this leaves a buyer
The product is real, it is priced, and its contents are listed item by item on Rockstar's own page. It ships from 19 November 2026, which is 56 days from the date of this article by this desk's own arithmetic, and it is the same day the game itself releases. The one sentence a shopper needs is the one Rockstar put in small type under the list, and it says the game is sold separately. Everything above that line is merchandise.
This desk has traced the rumour version of this product before, in the collector's edition disc claim that rested on a single anonymous source. The real product, now that it exists, settles that thread in the plainest possible way. There is no disc, and there is no game.
